About Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology - TIET

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology was founded in 1956 by the Late Lala Karam Chand Thapar of the Thapar Group of companies. The University is the result of collaboration between the then State of Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU), the Central Government and the Patiala Technical Education Trust (PTET). Before 2007 it was known as Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology. Situated in the city of Patiala in Punjab, it is one of north India's premier institutes of engineering and technology. The Thapar University is one of three organisations located in the 250 acre campus, known as Thapar Technology Campus (TTC), in the historic city of Patiala.

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology has impressively grown in size and activities during the last five decades of its existence. Nearly 10,500 engineers have left its portals so far, distinguishing themselves as proud Thaparians in diverse fields in our country and aboard. As a fitting recognition of its pioneering role in promoting the growth and development both at National and International levels, Thapar University was granted full autonomy and the status of a Deemed University in 1985 UGC. Thapar University offers courses at the bachelors, masters and Ph. D., level in several disciplines of engineering and technology.

Location and Transportation

By Air - The nearest domestic and International airports are at Chandigarh and New Delhi respectively. From New Delhi or Chandigarh you need to come by rail or road.

By Rail - Patiala is well connected with New Delhi by rail. There are direct train services from New Delhi
These are :-

  • The New Delhi-Bhathinda Intercity Express - Train no. 4731/4732 starts at 14.20
  • Dadar-Amritsar Express - Train no. 1057/1058 starts at 04.40

One can take these trains from New Delhi or the Shatabdi Express to Ambala starts at :-

  • Train No. 2029 at 07.20
  • Train No. 2011 at 07.40
  • Train No. 2005 at 17.15

And then hire a taxi from Ambala for the drive to Patiala.

By Road - Patiala lies just off the excellent National Highway #1 (Delhi-Amritsar) and is about 250 Km from Delhi. The journey via Ambala Cantt. takes about 5 hours. One is required to take the National Highway No. 1 from New Delhi to Rajpura. Thereafter, Chandigarh-Patiala Highway takes one to Patiala.Buses are also available after every half an hour from ISBT, New Delhi. One can also drive to Patiala from Chandigarh, via Zirakpur (on NH 22), and Rajpura.

Education Programmes

Distance Education - Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala has launched B.Tech. Programmes through Distance Education. These programmes judiciously combine the flexibility and ingenuity of the distance mode with the features of the on campus education system.With advances in multimedia and communication technologies, distance education is being adopted by corporations as well as universities. Proponents of distance education point out that the practice may allow learning to reach thousands or even millions more people on an “anytime-anywhere” basis. This applies especially to potential students who are motivated and committed but work bound, as well as students who find it extremely difficult to fit their family and work responsibilities into a traditional academic schedule.

The Admission to above courses will be offered to professionals in service only. All seats will be filled Exclusively on the basis of merit in Entrance Test of eligible candidates under each category.

The Department of Distance Education is going to start Master of Computer Application (MCA) program through distance learning mode from July 2009. More details will be available on the University website shortly.

  • Master Of Business Administration  

The institute has recently started MBA as well as dual MBA+BE five year integrated programme
Facilities

Hostels - The University has five boys and three girl hostels. To develop the overall personality of students each hostel works on motto of "home away home". Every hostel has its own indoor- outdoor games facility, libraries, reading rooms, common room, T.V. room, cyber café,water coolers, heaters, washing machines, PA system and gymnasium. There is a cooperative mess system in all the hostels. All the hostels have modular kitchens. Students are actively involved in all hostel activities through the different committees. Every Hostel organises its own annual function. There are various inter hostel and intra hostel competitions in cultural, sports ans literary fields. Every hostel also comes out with its own annual magazine. Every hostel is administered by one Warden who is one of the senior faculty member of the university. There is a disciplinary committee to maintain discipline.

Library - Central Library is in TCIRD Building Thapar Technology Campus, Patiala. Working hours.The Library is open 24 hours. On Sundays Library it is open up to 2 pm only. The Library remains closed on all Sunday evening and Institute holidays. Lending services are available Monday to Saturday 8.30 AM to 8.30 PM. The Library has a total collection about 50,000 printed volumes including books, textbooks, standards and theses & dissertations. Books are organized on open access shelves in various collections. Students can also avail of Book Bank facility which is maintained with the grant from the Central and State Government. The facility is meant primarily for students of weaker sections allows lending of textbooks for the whole semester.

Electronic Library - The library has established access to a large number of online and CD-ROM based electronic information resources, such as bibliographic databases and electronic journals. Theses and dissertations submitted to the Institute in electronic format since 2003 are also now available online on DSpace server.

OPAC - Online Public Access Catalogue - All the books may not be available on the shelf as many of them might have been borrowed by other members. To see a complete list of books on a particular subject one should look at the library catalogue.

INFLIBNET - Central Library is a member of Information and Library Network, a UGC Inter-University Centre. The Centre is involved in Library Automation, Database development, Resource sharing and Networking of Libraries. It subscribes to several Bibliographic databases which can be made use of members Libraries free of charge.

CORE - Centre of Relevance and Excellence in Agro & Industrial Biotechnology is among the first phase centres established in November 2000.Services provided by TIFAC-CORE in Agro and Industrial biotechnology cater to researchers, students, entrepreneurs, academicians and industry personnel.

STEP - Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park at Thapar University is a Biotech Business Promotion Center encouraging business oriented research in the area of Agro-Biotechnology. Established as a joint venture between National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India and Thapar University (TU) in April, 2005 offers a platform to individuals with semi-developed novel idea proof of concept from bench scale to pilot plant by providing infrastructure support and forging link with relevant organizations and industries. The activities are intended to stimulate technological innovation, utilization of research results, transfer of knowledge and setting up of technology driven businesses.

Computer Centre - The Computer Centre of the Institute is a central computational facility. It remains open from 8.00 AM to 8.30 PM on all working days & from 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM on Saturdays.

Sun Club - A joint venture between Sun Microsystems Inc. and Dept. of Computer Science and Engg. works in area of software development.

SPICMACAY - The purpose of this event is to promote the Indian culture, values, classical music and various arts forms in the youth and it is doing so slowly and continuously by organizing various events and activities in schools and colleges.

Sensoria - Sensoria is an online platform for students to Interact, Share knowledge, and Organize non-curriculum activities like university registered Societies or student festivals.

Eating Joints - These include Sagar Ratna, Nescafe, Ice Cream Corner, Polo Hut, Juice Corner, Verka shop and Cooperative Store

Achievements

NAAC Recognition - An Autonomous Institution of UGC, has accredited Thapar University at the B++ level among Deemed Universities with Institutional score of 82%.

DataQuest Rank - In a survey conducted by DataQuest, it was rated among the top 15 engineering schools in India.
