Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, popularly known as NIT-Jalandhar (NITJ) was established in the year 1987 as Regional Engineering College. NITJ is an autonomous Institution under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi. It was given the status of National Institute of Technology (Deemed University) by the Government of India on October 17, 2002 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi. Now the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India has declared the Institute as “Institute of National Importance” under the act of Parliament-2007.The Institute campus is spread over an area of 154 acres.
The campus area has been broadly divided into different functional zones:
(i) Institution zone for teaching departments/centres/administration
(ii) Residential zone for the faculty and staff
(iii) Students’ hostel zone
NIT Jalandhar Location
The institute is located on the G T Road bye pass at a distance of 14 kms. from Jalandhar bus-stand, 12 kms. from Jalandhar city railway station and 15 kms. from Jalandhar Cantt railway station. It is at a walking distance of half a km from Bidhipur railway crossing.

NIT-Jalandhar Facilities
Hostel Facilities - There are seven boys’ hostels and two girls’ hostels in the Institute. It offers facilities of reading; indoor games in each hostel. Internet facility is provided in most of the hostels. Other facilities like gysers, water purifiers, water coolers and air coolers are provided in all the hostels.
Library Facilities - Institute provides good and well build library for students. It has 1,03,456 volumes comprising books, standards, theses, CD-ROM, bound volumes of journals and videocassettes pertaining to various disciplines of Science, Engineering and Technology. It is equipped with video viewing facility also. The Institute library also subscribed many current journals and magazines in print form and almost all dailies.
Computer Centre Facilities - The institute offers a system that is based on work stations under Sun Solaris, Windows, Linux. It provides the interconnection and exchange of data between the various systems and enables them to work. For the Computational Services Centre, it has High End Computational Servers on which accounts are given to students, staff and faculty of the Departments and Centre’s in the campus.
Dispensary Facilities - It provides treatment for different diseases and also provides first aid to the injured, and also arranges different awareness camp Like cardiac camp, BMD camp etc. Different updates are been circulated for prevention from the seasonal disease. Dispensary is also equipped with the Pathological lab to carry out different investigations.
Security Facilities - The institute provides full security to students. It has given the security contract to PESCO security. This security team has 52 guards and 3 security officers. The security team works in three shifts of 8 hours each.
Transportation Facilities - The Institute provides Bus services to students, commuting from the campus to the city. There are two regular buses. These Buses run every morning and evening for lifting and dropping candidates.
Guest House Facilities - There is one guest house within the campus of the Institute. It has altogether 12 A/c Suites with a TV, Internet Facility and a Blower in each room. The guest house provides boarding and lodging facilities for the Institute guests and Visitors.
Bank Facilities - The institute has two banks situated in the campus, State Bank of Patiala and Canara Bank. These two banks have regular branches in the campus.

The Institute has been placed amongst top 50 engineering institutions of the country as per the survey conducted by Mint-C Fore in the year 2008.
