Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya (SJSV) is a State University dedicated to the cause of preserving and promoting studies and research in Sanskrit. It aims to revive the glorious ancient traditions of Orissa in the field of Sanskrit language. It is the third Sanskrit university of the country next to Sampurnananda Sanskrit University of Benaras and Kameswar Singh Sanskrit University of Darabhanga. SJSV was established on 7th July, 1981 in the holy land of Lord Jagannath i.e. Puri thus fulfilling the long aspirations of the Sanskrit lovers of the State. Shri Jagannath Sanskrit University (SJSU) has been the brainchild of the then Chief Minister of Odisha - Prajnana Vachaspati Sj. Janaki Ballabh Pattanayak , an eminent scholar of Sanskrit, who laid down the foundation stone at 9 A.M on 7.7.1981 at a spot of Mouza Balukhand. The inaugural function was observed ceremoniously at 10.00 A.M in the S.C.S. College premises amidst chanting of Vedic hymns, observance of scriptural rites, ringing of bells and blowing of conch shells. The university is named after the premier Deity of the eastern region - Lord Jagannath. With the creation of Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya, 142 Sanskrit institutions of the state including 5 Mahavidyalayas and 137 Vidyalayas and Pathasalas offering Prathama, Madhyama, Upashastri, Shastri and Acharya courses came under this Vishvavidyalaya. The university infrastructure includes two halls, a guest house, a health centre, a ladies gymnasium, a silver jubilee hall, auditorium, sports complex, four officers cum teachers quarters and many others on its hundred acre spacious campus on the beautiful sea beach.

The university campus is located at Shri Vihar , a land of 100 acres at Sea Shore in between reserve forest and delta.

Facilities at SJSV
Hostels – SJSV has separate hostel facilities for girls and boys. The girl’s hostel is named Brahmi Chhatri Nivas and can accommodate 240 students. The boy’s hostel is named after Viswanath Kabiraj, a reputed Sanskrit Scholar known for his work “Sahitya Darpan”. The hostel can accommodate 100 students. The hostel students are provided board and lodging facilities at a subsidized rate. The hostel has a recreation centre, a common room and indoor games are also available.
Library - The library is housed in a majestic building, reminiscence of Orissa’s architecture. It has a collection of about 35000 books, 500 referral journals and 200 manuscripts. The library has a reading room which has a capacity of seating more than 300 students at a time. There is also a special provision for presentation of palm leaf manuscripts published by the research centre for the benefit of the students and researcher. All the departments have also developed their own departmental libraries.
Scholarships – SJSU offers various scholarships to deserving students.
Some of these are:
Computer Centre – The centre provides computer education to the students so that they can be computer literate as well. The whole system is organized and controlled by a nodal computer centre with the HOD, Department of Nyaya as Course Co-ordinator.
Laboratories – SJSV has established a well equipped educational technology, media laboratory and psychology laboratory with required hard ware and software. This facility is specially meant for students of B.Ed who need to be information technology (IT) literate and for using digital resources.
Health Centre - The University has a health centre with visiting doctor for regular health check up of the students and employees. For emergencies the university has links with CDMO, Puri.
Department of Physical Education – Various students of the university participate in inter-university and inter-state competitions and many have brought accolades to it.
