Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Amritsar is an Autonomous Institute of management education established in 2015. It is amongst the 19 public IIMs established at Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Lucknow etc. IIMs are registered as societies under the Indian Societies Registration Act. Each IIM is autonomous and exercises independent control over its day-to-day operations. However, the administration of all IIMs and the overall strategy of IIMs are overseen by the IIM council. The IIM Council is headed by India's Minister of Human Resource Development and consists of the chairpersons and directors of all IIMs and senior officials from the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India. IIM Amritsar is the 15th Indian Institute of Management being set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development with the support of Government of Punjab. IIM Amritsar is being set up under the direction and mentorship of IIM Kozhikode, the 5th oldest IIM. As of 2015, IIM Amritsar is offering only Post Graduate Program in Management. The first batch of students has been enrolled for the class of 2015-17. The admission to the programme is through Common Admission Test (CAT) followed by GD/WAT and PI. IIM Amritsar operates and conducts various activities in the transit campus located inside the Punjab Institute of Technology, Government Polytechnic Compound till its own infrastructure and campus is setup and ready for use. The facilities here consist of classrooms, recreational space, activity rooms, library, computer and sports facilities. IIM Amritsar campus is proposed to come up at a site near Manawala on Amritsar-Jalandhar GT Road in 60 acres of flatland. IIM Kozhikode (IIMK) will mentor all activities at IIM Amritsar till it moves to its permanent campus (about three years later), or IIM Amritsar is able to handle these activities entirely on its own, whichever is earlier. Faculty members from IIMK are delivering courses at IIM Amritsar as of 2015. The Institute provides hostel facilities which are available at different locations, on twin sharing basis for boys and girls. Each room is provided with a fan, lockable almirah, a cot, a pillow, a mattress, a study table and a chair. Students have to arrange their own bed-sheets and other articles of personal use.
Buses ply at regular intervals of 10-15 minutes from the Railway station during the day time. One can board any bus going via Guru Nanak Dev University and get down at the Government Polytechnic Road Bus Stop, just one-stop after the Guru Nanak Dev University main gate. From the bus stop you can take an auto (0.5 Km) to reach the IIM Amritsar Transit campus.
