About CEPT University

CEPT stands for Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology. CEPT University is a leading institution offering undergraduate and post-graduate programs in the area of Natural and Built Environment and related disciplines since 1962. The Ahmedabad Education Society (AES), a premier voluntary non-profit organization, with the support from the Government of Gujarat, established the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) at Ahmedabad in 1962 with the inception of the School of Architecture. In 1994, CEPT was registered as a separate Society and a Public Trust. Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) has been accorded the status of a university by an Act of 2005 passed by the Gujarat State Legislative Assembly. CEPT University campus is located at the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Campus of the much larger campus of the Ahmedabad Education Society (AES). The colleges of arts, science, commerce, business management and pharmacy of AES, and Vikram A. Sarabhai Community Science Centre, Kanoria Centre for Arts and Hutheesinh Visual Arts Centre are located in the vicinity. The University includes over 8000 Sq metres of Studios, Lecture Halls, Theatre, Workshops, Laboratories, Library & Computer Centres and general activity spaces. The CEPT University has acquired additional land from AES measuring about 25 acres for future development.

All of its academic programmes are conducted in English and are recognized nationally and internationally for their excellence. CEPT has a highly qualified faculty known for its contributions in academics and research. CEPT has exchange programmes with several institutions internationally. All the programmes are approved by the State government and AICTE. All the undergraduate programmes are funded by the State government and the postgraduate programmes except the last three are funded by AICTE. Innovative changes in the curriculum and teaching methods are undertaken from time to time to keep pace with the advances in the relevant areas. Considering the professional nature of the disciplines dealing with human habitation and the built form, a number of experts from the industry / profession regularly teach at CEPT University as visiting faculty

Facilities

Hostels - Accommodation is available for full-time male students of the School at the CEPT hostel. Very limited accommodation for full-time female students is arranged in the Professors’ Quarters/Ladies Hostel run by the Ahmedabad Education Society. All the hostels are located at about 5-10 minutes’ walking distance from the CEPT campus.

Library - The library has approximately 50,000 books related to architecture, urban and regional planning, environmental planning and design, housing, civil engineering, visual arts, humanities, etc. Besides the library has an inter-library book-loan arrangement with other reputed institutions in the city. The library receives about 100 journals.  

CRDU - CEPT Research & Development Unit Research provides a major interface with the wider academic and business world. While some research is internally driven, several projects are commissioned and funded by national and international organizations such as the Ford Foundation, UNO, World Bank, Planning Commission, Central and State ministries, and industrial agencies. Research and development activities are carried out in many multi-disciplinary / inter-disciplinary areas like Architectural Designs, Quality Assurance, Condition surveys, Environmental assessment projects etc.

Laboratories - The University has 5 Laboratories. These include :-

  1. Computer Laboratory: The computer laboratory is adequately equipped with 50 Pentium PCs capable of handling statistical analysis, architectural and graphic design, geographic information system, and other computer applications. It also has CD writing, scanning, printing facilities, and dedicated cable internet connectivity.
  2. Remote Sensing Laboratory: This laboratory is equipped with sophisticated optical instruments such as procam, high magnification enlargers, large format optical enlarger, and optical reflecting projector. It is also equipped with light tables, stereoscopes, and various other instruments for interpreting aerial photographs and satellite images.
  3. Environment Laboratory: It is equipped with facilities for conducting waster and waste water quality tests and air quality monitoring.
  4. Transportation Laboratory: A full-fledged transportation laboratory equipped with instruments for traffic, transportation, and environmental studies, and TRIPS software has been established.
  5. GIS and DIP Laboratory: The geographical information systems (GIS) and digital image processing (DIP), lab is functioning with 3 HP workstations and 6 X-terminals. Unix-based six-license of Arc Info has been installed. Advanced software TNP Mips, Geomedia, etc., for GIS applications and EASI/PACE, ILWIS for DIP work are available.

Workshops - These include :-

  • Wood & Metal workshops
  • Materials Museum
  • Products Museum and various support facilities
  • The Sculpture, Ceramic, Graphics and Workshops : These workshops are shared with the Kanoria Centre for Arts. Extensive facilities exist for teaching and experimentation in these areas.
  • The Textile Weaving and Printing Workshops : These workshops provide support for courses in textile and graphic design within the Interior Design program.
  • The Furniture Workshop and Plastics Workshop : These workshops are being established to supplement the Interior Design Program. In addition there are the Wood & Metal workshops, Materials Museum, Products Museums and various support facilities.

Foreign Students - The application fee for foreign students is INR1000 and one needs to apply with a proof of design/research work (A4 size), copy of transcripts and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member of the last institute attended. Admission will be done based on the work portfolio and transcripts.

Scholarship - Candidates with a Degree in Civil Engineering and Architecture and Planning are required to qualify in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and candidates with a Master’s Degree in Geography/Economics/ Sociology are required to qualify in the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) examination to be eligible for a monthly scholarship in accordance with the Government of India rules.

Graduate Placement - The School liaisons with various State Governments Departments, NGOs, R & D organizations, and private sector consultancy organizations involved in the planning and related activities. The past graduates of the School are currently well placed in various sectors involved in academic, research, and consultancy activities. Students run a placement cell guided by the faculty to help conduct on-campus

Cyber Café - Cyber space with 25 PC (Unrestricted usage for CEPT University students). Email facilities are provided to all students and faculty through intra-net and web-based mails. Wi-Fi system with broadband connectivity of 2MBPS has been activated throughout the campus.

Women Development Cell - Women’s Development Cell aims to provide a forum for women on the campus to share information and resources, exchange ideas, promote awareness and ethics, work for gender equality and justice, and address grievances regarding gender issues including sexual harassment within the campus.

International Collaboration - CEPT University has student exchange programmes with many international institutions. As a part of these programmes, students are provided with an opportunity to spend one academic semester in these institutions. Some of these institutions are University of Calgary, Canada, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, Switzerland, Delft University, The Netherlands etc.
