About Gujarat Ayurved University
Gujarat Ayurved University was established by an act passed by Gujarat State legislative Assembly in 1965. It is the first statutory University of its Kind both at national and international level - exclusively devoted to Ayurvedic studies and Research. This University is administratively linked to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare both at State and Centre-indicating its special status. All the Ayurvedic colleges in the State are affiliated with this University. It has all the facilities for the studies for graduation, post graduation. and Ph.D. courses.
During the regime of Jam Saheb Digvijay Singhji in 1940's and onwards Dr P.M. Mehta was court physician (trained in western medicine). He was a great learner and visionary. Dr. Mehta impressed upon the king and the queen of Jamnagar to establish a center for Ayurvedic Studies. Hence, Shri Gulabkunwarba Ayurvedic Society was established in 1940. In 1944 a palacious building was constructed with generous contribution of the King of Nawanagar (Jamnagar) and some other rich persons and the building was named as "Dhanwantari Mandir".
On July 1st 1946 in Jamnagar a college for Ayurvedic Studies was established and named as Shri Gulabkunwarba Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya by the G.K. Ayurvedic Society. In 1954 Govt. of India started a premier research center for Ayurveda in Jamnagar named as "Central Institute for Research in Indigenous System of Medicine (CIRISM)" with Dr. P. M. Mehta as its Director
In 1956 Govt. of India had started another Institute in Jamnagar named as Post Graduate Training Center for Ayurveda (PGTCA) with Vaidya Bhaskar V. Gokhale as its Principal. In 1963 Govt. of India and Govt. of Gujarat jointly decided to amalgamate three Institutions viz. Shri G. A. Mahavidyalaya, CIRISM & PGTCA and named it as Institute for Ayurvedic Studies and Research (IASR).
The assembly of Gujarat State passed a legislation on 17.12.1965 to establish a University named as Gujarat Ayurveda University with its head quarter in Jamnagar. This University came in existence on January 5th, 1967 with Institute for Post Graduate Teaching & Research and other Ayurvedic Colleges of Gujarat State as affiliated colleges.

Location and Transportation - The institute is situated in the heart of the Saurashtra Regon. The institue is about 3 Kms. away from the railway and bus stations therfore can be easily approached.

Facilities
Hostel -The Institute maintains three hostels - Boys hostel, Ladies hostel and International Scholars' Hostel for the P.G., PhD and international scholars. Boys Hostel has a capacity of 100 single seated rooms and Ladies hostel has 40 single seated rooms. In International Scholars' Hostel there are 20 rooms of which, five rooms are fitted with Air Conditioners. Each individual room in International Scholars' Hostel is facilitated with attached bath, personal kitchen and balcony.
Library - The University has a vast library having rare publications and manuscripts. At present the library has more than 32,000 books, 7,300 manuscripts, 15,000 bounded volumes of journals. It is well equipped with publications related to AYUSH systems of medicine and modern science. It can boast of possessing a good number of them on palm leaves and Bhojpatras
Labs - Various laboratories i.e. Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Modern Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy . These laboratories encourage intensive research activities utilizing ancient knowledge of Ayurved
Education for Foreigners - Diploma and Certificate courses in Ayurveda for Foreign professionals is also available. Students from different countries like Japan, Sri Lanka, France, Russia, Netherlands, Brazil, Germany, Nigeria and Poland have joined the various courses.
Healthcare - O.P.D. and I.P.D. facilities are available at well equipped hospitals where various incurable diseases are successfully managed with this ancient system of medicine. It also provides intense practical training to the students of the University. The services of highly qualified specialists from the fields of Ayurved and Modern medicine are available.This hospital also provide the training and research facilities for Post Graduate and Ph.D. scholars.
Pharmacy - The Ayurved pharmacy is engaged in production of various Ayurvedic medicines as required by the hospitals and Research activities of the University.
