Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University is a Public University established by the Ordinance No. 5 of 1986 dated 17.5.1986 which was later passed as the North Gujarat University Act No.22 of 1986 on 11/9/86 by the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat. It is also known as North Gujarat University. The geographical jurisdiction of the North Gujarat University encompasses four districts-Mehsana, Patan, Banaskantha and Sabarkantha. It is named after Hemchandracharya, a great thinker who made valuable contribution to the studies in grammar, literature, religion and philosophy in Patan. The North Gujarat University was carved out of Gujarat University whose Headquarter is at Ahmedabad. It has been approved by the University Grant Commission.

Facilities
Residential Facility - A Guest House and Hostels are available for the visiting faculty and students.
Computer Centre - The Computer Centre has a separate and exclusive building, constructed near the Chemistry Department and next to Management Department having spacious built up area of 725 sq. mtrs at the ground floor. The 1st floor has online laboratories and the building envisages 2 laboratories for administrative work. The UGC had sanctioned level -1 computer centre in 1996 ( letter no f.l.-28/96 (comp.), date: 27/12/1996) having grant of Rs. 20 lacks for computer hardware’s and 1 lacks per year for software’s and books upto five years as well as six technical posts. The Total built up Carpet Area is 2000 Sq. mtrs.
Library - The University Library has a collection of 55,900 books, 1893 Dissertation & theses, 1981 back volumes of the Periodicals, 775 Audio/Video cassettes and 123 current periodicals. Dr. B.J.Sandesara's personal library as a gratis. It contains about 3,500 books and some back volumes of literary and ideological journals. The collection is very rich in the areas of Gujarati and Sanskrit literature, History, Culture Jainology and Indology.
Centre for Indian Diaspora and Cultural Studies - Gujarat has a significant number of its people in the Indian Diaspora. To cater to the needs of the community, the centre was established.

International Collaboration - The University has explored international academic relations with foreign Universities (MOU) for Students & faculty exchange, Joint research Program, Joint conference / workshop and Innovative study / Research programs. The University has International Collaborations with West Chester University, USA, Penn State University, USA, GSW University, USA and De’Montford University, UK.
