English Grammar

Grammar of any language is a set of rules describing the properties of the language concerned. In another words grammar of a language may be defined as an analysis of the various functions performed by the words of the language used by the natives.  A language is a way of written and verbal communication tool such that all of its elements are combined according to certain fixed patterns. These various elements of the grammar in particular the English grammar here, like Parts of  speech, The Sentences and its various types, idioms and phrases to name a few are called the building block of the  English language.

To learn a particular language in effective manner one has to master these set of rules by heart and that too in a particular set patteren as they are related to each other in a sequences.The learner has to go through all these parts of Grammar one by one as they all are interdependent. Every rule of the grammar is like a step of ladder to top, Thus to complete the ascent every step has to be firm and no step can be skipped in any way.

Various steps i.e the parts of grammar which one has to undergo in a sequence to have a command over the world's most widely used langauge ie. English are:-

Various Components of English Grammar

  • Alphabets
    Set of unique symbols or characters that represent language's sounds, can be written in two ways. Ex:- upper case as A, B, C lower case, and  a, b, c

  • Words/Parts of Speech
    Consonants and vowels- combine together making some meaning are known as words. These words are also known as “Part of speech” and can be further classified into different categories according to their general meaning and usage. Ex:- Rajesh, Book, Pencil.

  • Nouns
    Word used as the name of a person, place or thing. Ex:- Mahatma Gandhi, Chandigarh.

  • Adjectives
    Words used to add something to the meaning of the Noun .Ex intelligent boy, eight teams.

  • Pronouns
    Words used in place of a Noun. Ex: - She, they etc.

  • Verbs
    Word that tells something about a person is doing. Ex:- Harish Laughs.

  • Adverbs
    Word that modifies the meaning of a verb, adjective or another adverb Ex:- Milkha runs quickly, This is very cold ice-cream etc.

  • Prepositions
    Word usually used to show the relationship of a Noun or Pronoun with everything else in the sentence. Ex: - There is a dear in the farms, I am found of butter milk etc.

  • Conjunctions
    Words that merely join two sentences and sometime two words are known as conjunctions. Ex:-Two and two makes four. Ex:-He must weep, or he will die, our resources are little, but our moral is high.

  • Interjections
    Words that express certain sudden feeling or emotions are known as interjection. Ex: - Hello! What are doing in this room, Alas! He is badly injured.

  • The Sentence
    A group of words that makes a complete sense is called a sentence. Ex:-God is watching us from a distance.

  • Articles
    The words “a/an” and “the” are called Articles. These words are usually used before a noun. Ex:- An Apple, The black boy etc.

  • Determiners
    Words that are used before a noun to determine or fix it meaning. Ex:-Many people went to welcome Prime Minister, We need more information.

  • Modals and auxiliaries
    Words like will, would, shall, should, can , could, may, might, must, ought to, need, dare and used to etc when used with verbs (usually before the principal verb) expressing the mode or manner of the action denoted by the verb are known as Modals or Modal Auxiliaries. They use such ideas as ability or capacity, probability or possibility, permission, command, compulsion, duty, obligation, propriety etc.

  • Tenses
    That form of a verb which shows the time and the state of an action or event. There are three main Tenses
    1. Present Tense
    2. Past Tense
    3. Future Tense


  • The Infinitive
    Verbs which are not limited by number, person and time are called Non-Finite Verbs. An infinitive is one of them other being Gerunds and Participles. Ex: - He never succeeds in the examination.


  • The Gerund
    The verbs ending in - ing and having the features of a noun and a verb are called Gerunds.  Ex:- Walking is a good exercise.


  • The Participles
    A word which is partly a verb and partly an Adjective.Ex:- Hearing the noise, the boy woke up.
