The Gerund
The verbs ending in – ing and having the features of a noun and a verb are called Gerunds. Example:-
- Walking is a good exercise.
- I like reading books.
In the above given examples the words in bolds are showing the features of noun and a verb thus are known as Gerunds.
Gerund Exercise 1
Supply a Gerund or an infinitive whichever is suitable, using the verb in brackets:
- Nobody wants (stay) with him.
- He would not help (laugh) at his silly joke.
- Does the teacher want me (finish) the work today.
- She burst in to tears on (hear) about his death.
- She practices (paint) every day.
- They prefer (take) coffee.
- The grandfather came (receive) me at the station.
- She hopes (secure) good marks this year.
- She avoids (meet) men.
- Who does not like his children (wear) nice clothes?

A.) Combine each of the following sentences by using ‘Gerund’.

Gerund Exercise 5
Follow the instructions given in the brackets against each :
- He jumped up. He ran away. (use jumping)
- She saw a snake. She raised a hue and cry. (use seeing)
- Lata knew the answer. She put up her hand. (use knowing)
- We saw the Principal. We stopped talking. (use seeing)
- Turn to the left. You will find a baker’s shop. (use turning)
- The thief saw the police man. He ran away. (use seeing)
- They watched the aeroplane. It was flying over the trees. (Remove ‘it’)
- The police saw the dead body. It was floating down the river. (Remove ‘it’)
- Night fell. The birds returned to their nests. (Use ‘having’ + 3rd form)
- The sun rose. The fog disappeared. (Use ‘having’ + 3rd form)
- She walked a few kilometers; she got tired. (Use ‘having walked’)
- I went to school. Mohan accompanied me. (Use ‘having been accompanied’)
