Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management, popularly known as GITAM was founded in 1980 by an inspired group of eminent intellectuals and industrialists of Andhra Pradesh led by Dr. M.V.V.S.Murthi, Former Member of Parliament and popular philanthropist. GITAM is registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act XXXI of 1860. Its registered office is situated at Visakhapatnam in the State of Andhra Pradesh. It is governed by a Governing Body consisting of eminent educationists, industrialists, professionals, experts, etc. The successful saga of GITAM started with the establishment of a College of Engineering in 1980 offering a few undergraduate engineering programmes. Responding to the expanding needs in the fields of technology, management and pharmacy, a number of colleges and courses have been added to GITAM viz., College of Management Studies (1988), College of Pharmacy (2006) and GITAM Institute of Science (2007). All these institutions were established by creating necessary infrastructural facilities in the same campus spread over 100 acres of land. Separate buildings were provided for each institution following the AICTE as well as UGC norms. Over the years, GITAM has earned a high reputation as a premier institute of higher learning and its name has almost become a well-recognized brand name for quality education in UG, PG and research programmes in Engineering, Management, Science and Pharmacy disciplines not only in Andhra Pradesh but also in other States and abroad.
GITAM University, with its main campus at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, is a Deemed University recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 in August 2007. After becoming a Deemed University, GITAM has launched many new and innovative UG and PG programmes as well as M.Phil and Ph.D programmes. The University has started an Off-campus at Hyderabad with the approval of UGC which offers four year B.Tech, two year MBA and three year MCA programmes with effect from the academic year 2009-10. Courses promoting skills development and value orientation are also offered by the University and avenues for experimental learning are being attended. Computer skills have been incorporated as an integral part of the curriculum in many of the programmes offered by the University. Issues related to women and other socially disadvantaged groups find a place in post graduate programmes in management and other disciplines.

Centre for Distance Learning - The university offers a wide range of programmes, conventional and innovative, leading to diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. CDL - BA/BCom Flexible Admission - Centre for distance learing, GITAM university offers admissions into B.A. and B.Com programmes under flexible system in both telugu and english media. Formal education is not required and one who had completed 18 years of age and has the ability to read and write engilsh. Candidates will be selected for the course after they qualify in an entrance test. Centre for Integrated Rural Development - The Centre strives to promote, plan, undertake, develop and support projects/schemes aimed at all-round development, creation of employment opportunities, promotion of self-reliance, generation of awareness, organization and improvement in the quality of life of the people in rural areas.
Laboratories - Biodiesel Lab - GITAM University has recently established a state-of-the-art pilot biodiesel unit for the purpose of research and development and production of biodiesel. Library - GITAM knowledge resource centre named after the greatest philosopher, Sir Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, former president of india, is the most modern and fully computerized library on a picturesque location. It has vast collection of books and periodicals and monographs in the fields of engineering, technology, science, management, medicine, pharmacy, literature and books on various areas of general interest.
E-Learning Research Centre - ELRC is equipped with 150 Dell cum HP systems for students to access internet and do their research projects. Internet Facilities - 45 Mbps Broadband, providing connectivity to all the systems over the campus to take care of the technical endeavours of the students.
Sadarma Sadan - Sadarma sadan named hostel is meant for 600 boys with 300 single and double occupation rooms. The hostel is equipped with excellent dining facilities with solar water heaters, steam cooking , with a sea view & delicious food. A TV with cable connection has been also provided for entertainment of the students. The Hostel also has a resident warden to take care of the students and address their concerns. Cultural activities are also encouraged from time to time to keep the students in good spirit. Kokila Sadan - Kokila sadan is the name of the hostel for 1,084 girls with 283 rooms with modern cooking and dining arrangements is named.

Indoor Stadium and Track Field - The plinth area of the stadium is about 905.57 sq. mts. It provides for indoor games like volley ball, basket ball , shuttle badminton etc. with all the facilities required for the sportsman and spectators.
