About Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University

The Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University is considered as the largest in India with an infrastructure of 9 Colleges, 58 research stations distributed in 9 Agro-climatic zones of the State, 8 Agricultural Polytechnics, 1 Horticultural Polytechnic, 1 Multipurpose Polytechnic, 22 District Agricultural Advisory and Transfer of Technology Centres (DAATTCs), 12 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (Farmer Science Centre), one Agricultural Technology and Information Centre (ATIC) and Electronic Media Wing apart from one Extension Education Institute (EEI) and Agricultural Information and Communication Centre ( AI&CC). Thus, it is an unique multi campus University in the country having its units functioning all over the State with the two Faculties of Agriculture and Home Science showing splendid performance of exemplary nature.

The Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University (APAU) was established on June 12, 1964 at Hyderabad. The University was formally inaugurated on March 20, 1965 by Late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, the then Hon'ble Prime Minister of India.

The University was renamed as Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University on November 7th 1996 in honour and memory of an outstanding Parliamentarian Acharya N.G. Ranga, who rendered remarkable selfless service for the cause of farmers and is regarded as an outstanding educationist, kisan leader and freedom fighter.

Facilities and Activities

Hostels - There are five Hostels functioning under the College to provide boarding and lodging facility for the students of the College. All the Hostels are well furnished with big Dining Hall, Reading room, TV room and each room is well furnished with required furniture for comfortable stay of students. One of the unique feature is that all the Hostels have been provided with Solar Water heating systems to supply hot water to the boarders as and when needed. Besides, steam cooking units were also provided to all the Hostels for cooking of good quality food.

Central library - The central library building with a carpet area of 4645 sq. mts., can accommodate over 2 lakhs books and sitting capacity of about 200 readers. Separate library buildings / spacious and functional halls are available at other branch libraries. All the libraries are well furnished with a congenial atmosphere for in-house use of books and periodicals. CD-ROM facilities are available in all major campuses with a view to provide access to world agricultural literature.

Computer Centre - The Computer Centre at Rajendranagar, as a central computing facility of the University, was established in 1982. The centre is equipped with the latest generation computers and operating on various kinds of Operating systems catering to all computing needs of the University. Recently, computer networking has been introduced in the University to gain access to latest scientific advances and related information across the globe. Almost all departments of the colleges were provided with computers for use by the staff and students. Installation of Local Area Network (LAN) is in progress in all the seven zonal headquarters, colleges as well as University headquarters.

Ruska laboratory (Electron microscope building) - A central microscopy facility was established in May, 2000 with the finances provided under Agricultural Human Resources Development Project (AHRDP). Facilities like Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Optical Microscopy viz. Advance Research Microscope, Student Research Microscope and Stereo Zoom Trinocular Microscope are available. Faculty were trained in Japan is handling the work. This facility is common to all faculties of ANGRAU. It is also extended to staff and students of other institutes and Universities on payment basis.

University Auditorium - The University has well-designed multi purpose auditorium of International standards constructed at Rajendranagar Campus during the year 2001. It has sophisticated infrastructure to conduct meetings, seminars, symposia, and international conferences covering a plinth area of 5000 square meters. The main hall of the auditorium can accommodate 1000 delegates. It has two seminar halls with a seating capacity of 160 & 110 and a conference hall of 50 seating capacity. The auditorium is furnished with centralized AC facility of 90 ton capacity. It has a central canteen, a huge banquet hall and space for indoor games. The auditorium is equipped with the latest audio video equipment such as projectors, DTS system, Morten stage lighting system with Computer Control Camera coverage, 70 mm screen in the main hall, including automatic language translation system in one of the seminar halls.

Planning and Monitoring Cell
- Individual officers concerned do the planning of various activities of the University and it is then implemented with the approval of Competent Authority. However, during the past 40 years, the University grew very much in size and activities increased enormously. Besides these, the linkages among the Universities, institutions and agencies at State, National and International levels have also increased leading to complex situations. All these necessitated to evolve a suitable mechanism not only for planning but also for monitoring the activities of the University, collecting required data and creating a Data Bank, programme appraisal, monitoring and evaluation of different schemes functioning the University and also suggest corrective measures for implementing the programmes of the University from time to time.

Research Infrastructure - A Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) of the University is located in each of the nine identified agro climatic zones of the State with a total number of 67 Research Stations spread all over the state, with at least one in each district.

Electronic Wing - It is entrusted to develop interactive CDs on different crops on seed to seed concept and developed CDs on Rice, Cotton, pulses, Mango, SRI, Groundnut, castor and wooly aphid in sugarcane.

Kisan Melas - Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University has been organizing Kisan Melas through its centers to intensify extension services of University and to create awareness and educate farmers about latest farming technologies and recent developments in agriculture and allied fields.

Placement Cell - The Placement Cell in the college is functioning effectively ever since its inception for the benefit of the students. During the year under report many Companies, Banks, Industries etc are requesting the College for recruitment of the Graduates as Probationary Officers, Field Officers, Marketing Managers etc. The Placement cell provides the opportunity for the students by inviting all the companies to recruit the students by conducting Campus interviews.

Sports - The College has well established Sports Complex with spacious area and different Courts to play outdoor games like Cricket, Volleyball, Football, Basket ball, badminton, Tennis court. The Sports Complex also has the excellent provision for indoor games like Table Tennis, Chess, Carroms and Shuttle badminton. Sufficient space is also available for sports events like Running race, Shotput, Javelin throw, Long jump, High Jump - 100X400 relay etc.

Scholarship facility - The students of this College have the facility of getting the scholarship from the Social Welfare Department and BC welfare at UG level.

Literary events - These include Elocution, Essay writing, Debate, Quiz etc.

Cultural Activities - These include One act play, Solo song, Group songs, Solo dance, Group dance, Mono action, Mimicry etc.The students of this College are equally actively participated in VI & VII Youth Parliament competitions and won overall Third Prize and 10 individual prizes. Similarly, the students are also encouraged to participate in the NCC activity to participate in all the NCC programmes like Mounted expedition, NCC Camps to get the ‘B’ & ‘C’ Certificates
