Master of Physical Education is a Postgraduate Academic Master Degree which is awarded for a course or program in the discipline of Physical Education. It is abbreviated as M.P.Ed. or M.P.E. which denotes Masters Degree in Physical Education. All India Council of Physical Education is an Apex body of Physical Education constituted as per the Rajya Sabha (Upper House) of Indian Parliament to look after the Physical Education programmes in the country. The Masters Degree in Physical Education course includes practical skill proficiency in Athletics sports and officiating in major games one from each sports. In the second year of course practical two lessons of advance coaching. One in major game and other in Athletics are also being taught.

Duration - Masters in Physical Education is of 2 years, spread over a number of semesters which are generally 4 in number.

Master of Physical Education Degree is also available through Distance Learning programs provided by various Indian Institutes. Selection for entry to this M.P.Ed program may differ from one institute to another. There maybe added eligibility criteria for those willing to join this course.

Eligibility for Master of Physical Education

  • A candidate should have Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with at least 50% aggregate marks from a recognised Institute, foreign or Indian.
  • Some Institutes also consider Diploma in Physical Education (DPEd) of at least one year duration with 50% aggregate marks, awarded by an Indian University or a Board duly appointed by the Education Department of the State / Union territory.
  • Relaxation to the extent of 5% marks in aggregate may be given to outstanding sports persons who have represented the country in Asian Games/Commonwealth Games/Olympic Games or those who have secured first, second or third place at Senior National/Junior National/National games or at All India Inter-varsity Competitions in the sport disciplines recognized by the Indian Olympic Association/Association of  Indian Universities in the preceding 3 academic Years.
  • Reserved candidates (SC/ST) will be given age relaxation as per university rules.

Admission Tests

I) Written Test - A written test (100 marks) of 2 hours’ duration to assess general knowledge, general  mental ability and theoretical knowledge in the subjects studied at B.P.E. level. Minimum marks to be secured is 40%.

II)  Physical Fitness Test - Fitness Test may comprise some physical activities to assess physical fitness. These are Pull-ups (Boys) / Flexed-arm Hang (Girls), Flexed-leg Sit-ups for one minute, Shuttle Run (30ft X 4),  Standing Broad Jump, 50-Yard Dash and or 600- Yard Run. This is a qualifying test. Those who fail to secure 50% of the composite score of 60 points of the test battery shall not be eligible for further testing.     

III) Test in  one game/sport - The game/sport opted by the candidate for testing should be out of the schedule of I.O.A/Association of Indian Universities Sports Division.  However, the college reserves the right to delete any game/sport from the list on administrative considerations. A candidate has to obtain 50% to be eligible for admission to the Course.

Practical Specialization - The candidate has to select any one of the following games as the Specialization – I (Second best) and also specialize in the given Track and Field events during the first year.
