Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati was established in 1954, in the world famous temple town of Tirupati on the sprawling campus of 1000 acres. This University stands as a testimony to the wisdom and foresight of great visionaries Late Sri Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Late Sri Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, to cater to the educational needs and aspirations of the people of Rayalaseema area. The University was started with six departments of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Economics and Philosophy. The University has eight constituent colleges concerning various conventional and advanced subject, in order to provide good academic and smooth administrative service to one and all. Besides these colleges, it has a PG centre at Kavali. The University has 58 departments, wherein 71 different PG courses and several Diploma and Certificate courses are being run with a total academic faculty strength of 400 and 1500 non-teaching and a student strength of 5000, including research scholars. Several novel and newly emerging PG courses have also been introduced during this academic year. The University has been moving forwards in achieving academic excellence with a strong commitment and dedicated approach, by clearly setting up of a vision of its own. The initiatives taken by the Vice-Chancellor have already started yielding excellent results, in terms of research funding, extension activities and thus keeping the University on the path of excellence.

Facilities
Directorate of Distance Education - It was started in 1972 as the Institute of Correspondence Courses to cater the needs of students who cannot pursue formal college education. The Institute of Correspondence Course was upgraded as the Directorate of Distance Education as per the UGC norms and computerized. It provides various graduate, postgraduate programmes and also diplomas in various areas of study.
The S.V.U.Computer Centre - It provides services to the students, staff and research scholars of the university. It is also undertaking Teaching of Post-Graduate and certificate courses. Computer Centre is running M.Sc.(IS) two year full time post graduate course on self supporting basis from the academic year 2001-02 with an intake of 40 students. The Computer Centre is also running certificate courses of 16 weeks duration (evening course) since 1985. So far 22 branches of students courses were trained. The course offered are Unix & C, Oracle, Information Systems through COBOL, Organization and Operation of Micro Computers, Database Management, Word Processing, Office automation, Visual Basic, Programming with Java, Object-oriented technologies & C++.
Oriental Research Institute - The Institute was started for acting as a research and training Centre with appropriate divisions for the study of Sanskrit and other languages of the Hindu religion and Philosophy and of Hindu culture generally. The Institute published sixteen volumes of the Oriental Journal and about sixty-four books in Sanskrit (20), English (8), Telugu (19) Tamil (17) under three series named Sri Venkateswara Oriental Series, Sri Venkateswara Oriental Institute Studies and Sri Visistadvaita Sampradaya Granthamala, covering the areas of Kosa, Dharma sastra, Vyakarana, Scientific literature like Mathematics, Saiva, Vaikhamala and Pancaratra Agamas, Vedanta, Kavya, Stotra and Psychology. The Bharatakosa by M.R. Kavi and the History of Sanskrit Literature by M. Krishnamachariar Published from this Institute have become indispensable basic tools of research in Sanskrit Literate and literacy criticism.
Health Centre - It is a service Oriented mini-hospital extending free medical service to the Students, Research Scholars, Employees of S.V.University and their dependent family members like parents and unmarried children, Retired employees and their spouses and Guested and visitors to the University on various programmes. The Centre has one Senior Medical Officer, one Lady Junior Medical Officer and two Junior Medical Officers, who are assisted by paramedical staff members. Specialist consultancy services in general Medicines, general surgery, Dental surgery and Ophthalmology drawn from the specialists of S.V.R.R. Government General Hospital, Tirupati are available at the Health centre on specified days. The Centre renders Out Patient treatment, Inpatient treatment with 12 beds, Minor surgical procedures, Antenatal Check-ups and post natal care, Immunization, Annual Medical check-ups for students and call duty services. The centre also has a Clinical laboratory and Bio-chemical laboratory, X-Rays, Dental X-Ray, E.C.G etc., for diagnostic purpose,besides an Ambulance Van for the transport of the patients. It has proposals to acquire diagnostic equipments like Ultrasound Scanner and Upper gastro-intestinal endoscope.
Centre For Extension Studies - The centre undertakes extension and outreach activities by utilizing the expertise of various departments for the development of needy communities. A number of programmes like awareness on Health and Hygiene, Population Education, Social Empowerment of Women are regularly conducted by this centre.
University Science Instrumentation Centre - The present status of USIC level II was attained in 1984, University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC) is a non-vacation academic Department functioning as a centralized Instrumentation facility for the benefit of various Departments on the Campus and at times to the needy local educational institutions outside the campus also. One Scholar is presently working and One MRP is completed. 22 Research papers have been published so far. Project in progress Dr. A. Suresh Kumar, UGC (2203-06), Rs.6.54 Lakes. The Centre also conducts national level training programmes in Instrumentation in collaboration with the Western Regional Instrumentation centre Mumbai.
Pre-Examination Training Centre - The Pre-Examination Training Centre for Weaker Sections offers coaching for various Competitive Examinations like IAS, IPS, Group-I Services etc. Engineering Students have the opportunities for undergoing coaching for GATE and other examinations. Apart from coaching, books and stipend are provided to the students. The students are getting good ranks in the competitive examinations reflecting the success of the Centre.
Department Of Physical Education - The department serves as the central facility as far as sports, physical fitness and recreation are concerned to the entire S.V.University Campus, which consists of students from two constituent Colleges, Staff (Teaching and Non-Teaching) numbering approximately 5000. The Department at the University Centre plays a vital role in the organization of Inter-Collegiate Tournaments. The department has organized Inter-University Tournaments for almost all the Games including All India Inter-University Athletic Meet. The Department of Physical Education provides various sports infrastructure facilities like Two Flood-lit Tennis Courts, Two Flood-lit Basket Ball Courts, Three Volley Ball Courts, Two Ball Badminton Courts, One Hockey Ground etc.
Library - Sri Venkateswara University Library has a total membership of 8,800. Housed in a spacious building with a seating capacity for about 400 readers, the library has 16 professionals and 38 administrative and supporting staff. It has a total collection of 3,43,061 volumes which includes 34,166 bounds volumes of journals and nearly 2,970 theses and dissertations. It currently subscribes to 300 current periodicals at an annual cost of 3.25 lakhs of rupees.
Hostels - The Sri Venkateswara University College Women’s Hostel comprises six blocks which accommodate all categories of women students admitted into S.V.U. College of Arts and Sciences and S.V.U.College of Engineering. Food is served in 4 messes for Research Scholars, Arts and B.Ed. students, Science students and students of S.V.U. Engineering College. Reading / Common Halls are provided in all the blocks with Television, News papers and various Magazines. The mess is run on no loss and no profit basis following dividing system. For men there are 6 messes and 8 Blocks for S.V.U. College Hostels for Men.
Banks - The banking needs of the staff and students are met by the branches of the State Bank of India and Andhra Bank.
Cafe - Cafes at convenient locations in the campus cater to the tastes of the inmates and visitors alike.
Co-operative Store - The SVU Consumers’ Co-operative Stores supplies essential commodities, cosmetics, textiles etc., to students and staff at reasonable prices. It also runs an Indane LPG Agency.
Employment Bureau - The Placement Cell in S.V.U. College of Engineering imparts preparatory coaching to students and listens with the industry to arrange campus selections. The cell is headed by a Teacher, nominated by the Principal and is manned by an office assistant. This is a student-supported activity. Oracle Software, Satyam Computers, TCS, Wipro, Sonata, BAAN and CMC are some of the leading software companies visiting the campus regularly. Some manufacturing companies, both in public and private sector, like HAL, HM, L & T, TISCO, ECIL, Voltas picked up students of this college in campus selections in the past. At its peak, the cell could arrange placements for about 50% of its intake strength.
