Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala was established in year 2006 by Punjab Government (Punjab Act No. 12 of 2006) as a public university. The University is registered with the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, under Section 2(f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. It has the approval of the Bar Council of India for imparting professional legal education. RGNUL is an autonomous body, governed by its own Statutory Councils and has a democratic administrative system. The University follows the semester system where social science subjects are taught along with law for the first two years to initiate students towards an interdisciplinary approach to legal education. Internship of the University has been divided into 2 stages through the Initial and the Advanced Internship Programmes. The University offers B.A. LL.B.(Hons.) Five Years Integrated Course divided into 10 Semesters (i.e., 2 Semesters in 1 Academic Year). English, Economics, History, Political Science and Sociology are taught as the social science components of legal studies. Power Point Presentations are compulsory for each seminar in the respective subject. RGNUL is also a member of a number of professional organizations of national and international stature, some of which are Asian Law Institute (ASLI)- Singapore, Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA), Indian Society of Criminology (ISC) - Madras, International Association of Law Schools (IALS), International Law Students Association (ILSA), United States of America etc. The university is spending its last few days at its transit campus at Mohindra Kothi, Patiala. The construction of its new campus at Sidhuwal Village is nearing completion. Its permanent campus shall come up in an area of 50 acre on Patiala-Bhadson Road, about 8 kms from Patiala city by the end of 2010.

SOL - School of Law established by IGNOU aims at achieving excellence in the field of Legal Education. SOL has initiated various Post Graduate Diploma Programmes in various fields of Law. There courses shall be undertaken as distance education programmes and shall be run through various Programme Study Centres of IGNOU.

The School of Law shall also offer Under Graduate Programmes in Para-legal Education; and Post graduate Programmes like Masters Programmes in Criminal Justice and Agricultural Law, Masters Programme in Intellectual Property Rights in Collaboration with Queensland University of Technology, Australia.
Hostels - The University has added Girls Hostel for the first batch of girl students at campus. The hostel also has some rooms specifically constructed for the faculty members Hostel has been provided with all the facilities. There are 10 flats on the campus which are given to the faculty members and the students. More hostel facilities will be available soon.
Library - The Library at RGNUL has a collection of over 20,000, volumes covering a wide range of general and special subjects consisting of text books, reference books, volumes of journals, reports, etc., apart from the current legal periodicals. The RGNUL Library subscribes to 45 law journals and about 25 magazines.
Computer Laboratories - RGNUL has 2 fully equipped centrally air conditioned computer laboratories with about 20 computers each. The computer labs function till the university hours and cannot be used by students on holidays and Sundays. The entire University campus is Wi-Fi enabled.
Health Centre - The RGNUL University health Centre (UHC) has complete facilities for indoor admissions, minor surgeries, resuscitation equipment, vaccinations, and sterilization of equipment and stock of medicines for routine and emergency ailments. It functions for 24 hours, every day.
Moot Court Hall - Mooting is one of the prime academic exercises promoted in RGNUL. It is the policy of the University to encourage its students to participate in as many national and international moot court competitions as possible. The University moot policy is backed by the keen interest of the innovative faculty members. The well equipped library, computer lab with internet and well furnished Moot Court Hall, provide an atmosphere conducive to young creative brains to focus on the legal debates at various moots.
Education Facility for Foreign Students - Admission to the category of ‘Foreign Nationals’ possessing the citizenship of a country other than India shall be Direct Admission on the basis of inter-se-merit of the qualifying examination, after due verification of equivalence and also on the basis of the interview to ascertain proficiency in English Language and overall academic record. All Foreign National Candidates must apply directly to the Registrar RGNUL, Mohindra Kothi, The Mall, Patiala in the CLAT application form with supporting documents.
Gymnasium and Sports Activities - The RGNUL Campus has state-of-the-art fitness centre, designed exclusively for the students. Students have also been provided with others sports facilities like Football, Table Tennis and Badminton.
