Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) was conceived in 1986 on the lines of AIIMS, New Delhi. It is managed by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). The foundation stone of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences was laid on 18th April 1986 by Late Sri. N. T. Rama Rao, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in the pilgrim town Tirupati. The hospital started functioning from 26th February 1993 by an Act of A.P. State Legislature. SVIMS became a University in 1995 by an act of Andhra Pradesh State Legislature. It was recognized by Medical Council of India (MCI) in 2003 for conducting various courses like DM, M.Ch. and MD courses. In 2006, the Government of India included SVIMS University as one of the institutions for upgradation at par with AIIMS, New Delhi under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) scheme.
The institution, spread in a 107.04 acre campus and is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 12 (B) of the UGC act, 1956. Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences was established with a view to provide Super Specialty facilities with nominal cost to the poor. Its major objectives include service, training and education in advanced medical sciences and technology. For this purpose, SVIMS has well trained, dedicated faculty to serve the poor and needy patients belonging to not only Andhra Pradesh but also several of the neighbouring states as well. The University imparts medical education through its constituent institutes, namely - Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women, the College of Nursing and the College of Physiotherapy

Hostels - The University provides separate hostel facilities for boys, girls and resident doctors.
MEDLARS - SVIMS also introduced MEDLARS awareness programme, which is a boon for all the students and medical personnel.
Central Library - SVIMS University has an excellent health science library with a collection of 7847 books, subscription for 115 foreign and 11 Indian Journals. The library has a back volume journal collection dating back to 1993. Access to e-resources subscribed by the library has also been provided for off-campus users. The library has adopted ‘KOHA’ Library automation software during 2014. Online public access catalogue (OPAC) which can be accessed through the parameters like author, title, subject etc and the library day to day activities are carried over with the help of KOHA software. There is a computer laboratory consisting of 35 computers to access e-resources for library’s users at free of cost. These are also used for browsing internet through National Knowledge Network for the use of faculty, postgraduate doctors, postgraduate students and whosoever requires so.
National Knowledge Network - The NKN is a state-of-the-art multi-gigabit pan-India network for providing a unified high speed network backbone for all knowledge related institutions in the country. SVIMS is one among the reputed institutions which is in utilization of these services. The NKN comprises of an ultra-high speed CORE (multiples of 10 Gbps), complimented with a distribution layer at appropriate speeds. Participating institutions at the Edge can connect to the National Knowledge Network seamlessly at speeds of 1 Gbps or higher.
Central Research Laboratory – It is equipped with facilities such as thermocyclers (PCR machine), Real-time PCR, automated DNA sequencer, spectrophotometers, electrophoretic instruments with gel documentation facility etc. These facilitate the faculty, research scholars and students in keeping them updated with the experimental evidences which further help in understanding the progression/cause of diseases thereby enabling better patient care through proper diagnosis, treatment and management of various diseases.
Computer Centre – It is equipped with medical literature analysis and retrieval system on line (MEDLINE) to get the information available from standard medical journals in the entire world.
