About Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam - Women's University

Sri Padmavathi Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) (University for Women) is a Women's State University. It was founded in the year 1983 by Sri N.T. Rama Rao, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, with the objective of training women to become better builders of the Nation and to inculcate skills of leadership in all aspects of life.The University was established under the Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam Act of 1983, which came into force on the 14th of April 1983. It was started with 10 faculties and 300 students and twenty staff members. Today, the University has a student population over 2700 and an academic staff numbering 250. It is named after the goddess Sri Padmavati, the consort of Lord Venkateswara. The campus of Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam is spread out in a lush green area of 138.43 acres. There are separate buildings for Humanities and Sciences, University’s Administration, Central Library, University Auditorium, Sericulture Complex, and School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and also an independent building for Computer Science and Computer centre. The University offers varied courses in the fields of Humanities, Arts, Sciences and Social Sciences, Law, Engineering and Technology, and Business Management. Many of the courses in these areas are also offered by the University through distance education by 10 study centres in different places. Further, as a corollary to the Technopreneur Promotion Programme (TePP) of the Government of India, which is a joint venture of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and the Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the University has established a Technology Outreach Centre (TUC), with the novel objective of promoting innovative ideas of intellectual individuals to convert them into tangible realities by providing the necessary financial assistance.

Admission Guidelines

  • Admissions to all the Programs offered by the University are open to women candidates only.
  • Admissions for M.C.A., M.B.A., B.Ed., LL.B. and B. Pharmacy will be based on ranks obtained in the state wide Common Entrance Tests conducted by various Universities as per the direction of A.P. State Government.
  • Admission into M.Sc. Biotechnology will be based on the ranks obtained in the SPMVVCET.
  • A candidate is entitled to pursue only one full time course at a time. However, they may pursue any part-time evening course offered by the University.
  • Admission to all the programs will be purely based on merit and the system of reservations to various categories. The candidate who has failed in the subject of choice is not eligible for admission in that subject.
  • Candidates seeking admission to Postgraduate and Postgraduate Diploma courses should have completed under-graduate course from a recognized University obtaining the minimum marks prescribed for the respective programs of study. However, in the case of candidates belonging to scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and physically handicapped categories, a relaxation of 5% is made.
  • Suppression of factual information or furnishing false information in the application will result in the cancellation of admission at any time.

Location - SPMVV  is located on the Road, in a spacious and peaceful surroundings, away from the Tirupati, nestling at the foot of the sacred Tirumala HillsThe University is situated at a distance of 3 km from the railway and bus stations of Tirupati.

Accommodation - The University is fully residential one. Accommodation is provided in six Hostel buildings, each with three floors. Clean, Healthy and Hygienic diet is be supplied in the Hostels.

  • Caution Deposit - 3000/- (which is refundable).
  • Other fee (registration, identity card & contingency) - 175/- (at the time of admission).
  • Establishment fee (maintenance, electricity & room rent) - 400/- per month.
  • Mess Charges (on average) - 900/- per month.

Admission Formalities and Rules

  • Students of Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam are eligible for admission into the Hostel.
  • Admission into the hostels should be made in the prescribed form available in the Hostel Office by producing the fee receipt issued by the College office.
  • The candidate and parent/guardian should sign the declaration form at the time of admission into Hostels. Married students are permitted to stay in the hostels up to six months of pregnancy.
  • Ragging is strictly prohibited in the Hostel. Any student found violating this rule will be dismissed from the Hostels and Legal action will be initiated.
  • Students are not permitted to change their rooms once the rooms have been allotted to them, without the prior permission of the Warden.

Every student should

a)  Open an account in Andhra Bank located in the University.
b)  Possess her identity card issued by the college office while entering and leaving the hostel, dining hall, health centre etc.
c)  Use her own lock to her room.
d)  Keep her room, toilets and surroundings clean. She should make use of dustbins available in the rooms and toilets.
e)  Switch off fans and lights when she is not in the room and close the taps in toilet/bathroom.
f)  Wash her clothes in washing area and not in bathrooms.
g)  Be present for attendance at 6.30 p.m.everyday.

University Library - The University has a fully equipped central Library, housed in a spacious building. It has a large stack area of 55,000 volumes and 232 journals. INFLIBNET facility is being installed, which would facilitate networking with libraries in other institutions. Under INFLIBNET Programme the University Library has computerized all of its operations using SOUL software. Around 660 e-Journals from Springer link and 650 from Kluwer can be accessed through INFONET Programme. CD-search, OPAC, Internet facility and reprographic facilities are also available for staff and students.

Computer Centre - The Computer Centre has advanced equipment both in terms of hardware and software and provides computing facilities to the staff, students and University administration.The Computer Centre has 3 servers and 50 computers of latest configuration with Windows NT, LINUX and Vista based operating systems.The Computer Centre has latest software's like visual studio, C++, Java and Dot net Technology. Internet and Intranet facilities are also provided to link up all the units in the University through Computer Centre.

Campus Network - Administration, Departments, Hostels, Library and other centres of the University are networked and Internet facility is provided.

Office of the Student Affairs - The Dean of Student Affairs gives guidance on student related matters such as accommodation, liaison with student bodies etc.      

Choice Based Credit System - The University follows Choice Based Credit System. The flexible curricula enables the students to pursue courses of their interest and obtain interdisciplinary expertise.

Sciences - Paper minimum 45% and aggregate 50%.
Arts - Paper minimum 40% and aggregate 50%.
B.Ed. - Paper minimum 40% and aggregate 45%.
L.L.B. - Paper minimum 35% and aggregate 40%.

Health Centre - A six bedded Health Centre with basic laboratory and surgical facilities is provided on the campus.A residential Medical Officer will be available for the needy. Ambulance service is also available.   
    
Career Education and Placement Centre - This centre provides career advise, career and placement service to all the students. Subjects comprises the following:(a) Career Awareness,(b) Decision Making, (c) Information on Employers and Vacancies, (d) Job Hunting Skills, (e) Interview Skills, (f) Personal and Managerial Skills and (g) Career Management Skills. Guidance is provided through different means including self study materials, lectures, workshops, video shows, one to one counselling, online counselling through internet and alumni interviews     

Counselling Centre - The University provides counselling on personal matters as well as psychological counselling and advise will be provided.     

Legal Aid Centre
- It extends counselling on legal matters.     

Coaching Centre - U.G.C. sponsored schemes for special coaching and remedial classes are provided for SC, ST and students belonging to the minority sections of the society. Coaching is also provided for GMAT, TOEFEL, Civil Services and other Public Examinations.

Centre for Research Studies
- It is an academic body which serves as the focus in the University for the affairs of programmes for Students pursuing Research Degrees of M.Phil. and Ph.D. It is monitored by a Board of Research Studies Headed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University. Research Handbook will be provided to the Research Scholars. It is intended to be ‘User friendly’ expression of the intentions of those university regulations and procedures which govern the study of Research Students and articulates the mutual expectations of the University, Research Students, Supervisors and Head of the Students, so that each may be aware of the responsibilities incumbent on the other. MLA. Style sheet and other relevant material will be provided which makes recommendations for the format and the Style of the presentation of the thesis which goes beyond the formal stipulations in the University regulations and provides ideas and suggestions and what makes for well presented thesis. Yearly publication of the abstracts of thesis submitted in the preceding year will be undertaken under the aegis of this Centre. This Centre also gives its expertise and assistance in obtaining patents. Medium of instruction and admission is through entrance test conducted for all disciplines.

CIGS - Centre for Indira Gandhi Studies is supported by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. The centre in the campus is the only one of its kind in the country. Under the aegis of the centre, a series of programmes are taken up that are beneficial to the general public at large. In the series, various programmes are being organized commemorating and remembering of Mrs.Indira Gandhi’s life and vision including her leadership, courage and conviction qualities.

Centre for Ambedkar Studies - The Centre for Ambedkar studies has been set up with a UGC grant of Rs.8.20 lakhs, under the Scheme of Epoch Making Social Thinkers of India during X plan (2006-07). The Centre aims to encourage research on Ambedkar’s philosophy, to conduct short-term courses, and to develop the necessary infrastructure for the same.

Centre for Women’s Studies - The Centre for Women’s Studies supported by UGC undertakes different activities relating to Women development and empowerment. The Centre provides training on various leadership qualities and Gender sensitization to the students to enhance their personality and recognize their hidden talents. It creates awareness on crucial issues related to women by motivating the students to participate in several competitions held to celebrate important days during the year. It provides a strong resource base on Women’s Studies through its books and other material in the CWS library and helps the students of various disciplines in the University to have a knowledge base on Women’s issues. The Centre is also running a student-counselling centre to counsel the students on academic and personal issues. It also runs a family-counselling centre to amicably solve disputes in the family. Centre works in collaboration with the District Police in preventing violence and atrocities against women. News items related to women are displayed in front of the Centre. The Centre is located at room no.120, Humanities Block. It is open from 10.00 am to 4.30 pm on all working days (during summer from 8.00 am to 1.30 pm).     

IGNOU Study Centre - Indira Gandhi National Open University was established in September, 1985 by an Act of Parliament, with a view to democratize education, so that it covers large segments of population, vocations, and professions. The primary emphasis is on innovation, flexibility and cost effectiveness. Student support services are provided by the University through a network of study centres scattered all over the country. The University study centre enables the students to receive regular information and learning support. The centre provides the students with Library, Audio and Video facilities to help them in the learning process.

Distance Education Centre
- The Distance Education Centre of Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam provide professional education to women in Andhra Pradesh, and making them self-reliant. To this end the university offers courses which serve the dual purpose of academic excellence with applied orientation. The academic programmes of the university seek to develop in the students specific skills for gainful occupation.

Foundation or Bridge Courses - Students admitted into courses in the University will be required to undertake three foundation courses spread over during their course of study.

These are as follows:

Semester I  - Communicative English.
Semester II - Foundation Course in Computer Applications.
Semester III - Gender Studies.

Examinations are conducted in the semester or annual pattern for all the courses. Supplementary examinations are conducted only for undergraduate courses. The examination pattern for all the courses consists of two Internal Examinations per paper in each semester. The final examinations are conducted at the end of each semester.

Research - Financial support for various projects is provided by various funding agencies such as UGC, DST, DBT, MHRD, AICTE, CSIR, DFID, ICSSR etc.

NSS - National Service Scheme unit of University College is consistently involved in social service activities. It has 12 units and all the students of the University are enrolled as volunteers in the units. Under the guidance of the Program Co-coordinator and the Program Officers the NSS unit is vigorously involved in the conduct of clean and green activities, special camps in rural areas, arranging extension lectures, organizing workshops and training programmes etc. With the spirit of humanitarian service, the NSS volunteers regularly participate in National Integration camps. Several volunteers have represented the University in the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi, thus placing the University on a high pedestal. Blood donors unit and cultural affairs unit have also been initiated recently under the umbrella of NSS activities.     
    
Youth Red Cross - The University has started a Youth Red Cross unit, to promote the spirit of Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary service, Unity and Universality. The unit aims at promoting health and hygiene, providing service to others and world friendliness. The unit is actively involved in humanitarian service activities, promotion of friendship and cultural activities     
    
Cultural Affairs - This unit caters to the extra curricular and co-curricular needs of the students. Under the guidance of a coordinator, the students are encouraged and trained to participate in various cultural activities and festivals at regional and national levels. The students have brought laurels to the University by participating and wining prizes in various Youth festivals.     
    
Ethical Rejuvenation - For the integrated development of the students, the University is constantly striving to promote ethical rejuvenation amongst the students. Spiritual discourses, lectures, yoga, meditation etc. are organized for the students from time to time.     
    
Student Association - The University has an active Students Union, which is an elected body of student representatives. The Student Association advisor guides the students association in looking after the student activities in areas such as sports, cultural affairs, hostels, college magazine, etc. The association body is actively involved in the conduct of competitions for college day celebrations, and various activities organized for social and humanitarian causes at State and National level.     

Revaluation - Revaluation facility is provided for UG and PG Diploma courses of regular and Distance mode having single external valuation with a fee of Rs.650/- per paper.
