About Vikrama Simhapuri University - VSU
Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) is a State University which had been established by Act No. 29 of 2008 enacted by the Legislature of the State of Andhra Pradesh on 25th June 2008. Vikrama Simhapuri University was initially a Unitary University. It became an Affiliating University in 2010 when the Government of Andhra Pradesh authorized the University to exercise its powers of affiliation under the A.P Universities Act, 1991, to bring UG/PG/Professional/Oriental, etc., colleges in Nellore district under its jurisdiction from the academic year 2010 - 11. As a result, 126 colleges affiliated to Sri Venkateswara University were brought under the fold of Vikrama Simhapuri University, Nellore with effect from the academic year 2010 - 11. The University Grants Commission conferred recognition on the degrees awarded by Vikrama Simhapuri University under Section 22 of the UGC Act, by 20th January 2010.
VS University is a member of Association of Indian Universities since 2010. The University conducted its first convocation in June 2014. As of 2015, the University is having two campus colleges at Nellore, VSU College of Arts, Commerce and Management, VSU College of Science and Technology and one post graduate Centre (VSU PG Centre) at Kavali. The PG Centre at Kavali established in 1979 is now the extension campus of VS University is located in a sprawling 78 acre campus with very good infrastructure. Vikrama Simhapuri University has been established keeping in mind the demand of the people of Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district, re-christened Potti Sriramulu Nellore. In the light of the rapid industrialization and the establishment of the Special Economic Zones especially in the sectors of textiles and tannery products, Vikrama Simhapuri University has started courses of study which are relevant to region, which integrate work skills with the curriculum, and which strive to promote the employability of the students.
Vikrama Simhapuri University Facilities
Vikrama Simhapuri University PG Centre, Kavali – VSUPG Centre, Kavali, has its roots laid down by late Sri D. Ramachandra Reddy who in 1972, started, Economics and Commerce in 1973 at Tummalapenta (Ravindra Nagar). These were transferred to Jawahar Bharati Campus in 1976 due to Cyclone. Subsequently in 1978, the two courses were handed over to S.V. University, Tirupati. Along with the introduction of two more courses in Science - Physics and Zoology, the Centre became a full fledged P.G. Centre by September 1979. In 1984, the PG Centre got shifted to its own campus of 77.8 acres on the Peddapavani Road (nearly 1.5 km. from Kavali trunk road). In addition to the regular (budgeted) four courses - MCA course was also started in 1997.
Features of the Centre
- Green Campus - Greenery in the Campus has been the high light of the PG Centre due to the efforts of Late Prof. G. Raghava Reddy, during his regime as Special Officer. Most of his research students (scholars) have contributed their might in developing the campus by sanctioning grants under Social Forestry Scheme (DRDO) and also some crucial balance grants of the district. Under extension activities, clean and green programmes, bush clearing etc. have been taken up by the students and staff of the PG Centre. NSS unit has played a major role in this context.
- Social Welfare - Organizing Blood donation camps, AIDS awareness programmes and Pulse polio rallies have been the regular activities of the centre. Small message oriented plays on AIDS, hygiene, sanitation, superstitions etc. are organised for the welfare of the community at large.
- Research and Consultancy - All the departments in both the campus colleges and the post graduate centre are actively engaged in research. Several research projects have been operated, financed by various organizations like CSIR, ICSSR, UGC, DBT etc. About 160 Ph. Ds. and 300 M. Phils have been awarded in various research fields. Various researches’ have been conducted in collaboration with national institutions and also some government sector organizations. Consultancy with some national and private organizations has also been the salient feature of departments like Zoology, Bio Technology, Microbiology etc. The faculty of the PG Centre has distinctly contributed more than 35 books and 700 research articles in national and internationally reputed journals. Nearly 15 national seminars and several major projects have been completed.
- Library - PG Centre Library is well equipped with about 30,000 books and 20 journals. The library is well furnished and is situated in an area of 9,600 sq. ft.
- Laboratories – There are two Computer laboratories - one for MCA and the other is the Computer Centre meant for other departments. There are about 100 PC systems and each science department is well equipped with the required gadgets.
- Hostels – The PG centre of the university offers separate facilities for Men and Women.
- Seminars - The University has been regularly organizing National and International seminars, conferences and workshops inviting eminent scientists and academicians from within the country and abroad.
- Literary and Cultural Activities – Various literary and cultural events are organized by the University College in view of the Independence Day, Republic Day, Annual Day Celebrations, Freshmen Day and various others. Literary activities such as Elocution, Debate, Book-hunt, Reference Reading, Book-Reviews, Essay Writing, Quiz competitions etc. are organized from time to time to shape the all round development of the students. Various extra-curricular activities are also organised keeping the same in mind.
