The name, Nagarjuna University is quite significant in that the great Buddhist preceptor and Philosopher Acharya Nagarjuna founded a University on the banks of river Krishna some centuries ago and made it a great centre of learning, attracting a large number of teachers and students form distant parts of the world. The University was established by Act 43 of 1976 of A.P. State Legislature and Governed by Act 4 of 1991 covering 6 Universities of the State. The present Acharya Nagarjuna University is not very far from the haloed spot, as it derives its moral and intellectual sustenance from Acharya Nagarjuna in which context the University has been renamed Acharya Nagarjuna University through the A.P. Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2004, promulgated by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh.The aspirations of the southern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh to pursue Post-Graduate education nearer their homes resulted in the establishment of Acharya Nagarjuna University.
In 1976, Andhra University started a Post-Graduate Centre in Nallapadu, Guntur Dt., Andhra Pradesh, as an Extension Center to cater to the needs of higher education of the people of this region. It is in the fitness of things that a University should grow from this Center to fulfill the desire of the people of this belt. Accordingly, Nagarjuna University came into being in August 1976. It was inaugurated on 11th September, 1976 by the former President of India, Sri Fakruddin Ali Ahmed.
Infrastructure
It is one of the largest universities in the region of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India. Acharya Nagajuna University consists 39 Academic Departments, including several self-financed courses, which started operating since 1992. Its jurisdiction was extended to three districts now having over 450 affiliated colleges offering Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate, Engineering, Education, Law, Pharmacy and Oriental Languages courses. Now it has 39 Post-graduate teaching-cum-research courses on the campus, while 71 affiliated colleges offered P.G. courses. The University runs two P.G. centers-one at Ongole (a fully self-financed center) and another at Nuzvid (aided).

Facilities and Campus
Acharya Nagarjuna University is situated between the cities of Vijayawada and Guntur in Andhra Pradesh on Calcutta and Chennai National Highway (NH-5). Its campus is spread over an area of 293 acres.
Hostel - The University maintains hostels for the accommodation of students enrolled into the University College. There are three hostels viz. Gowtham, Ashoka and Satavahana for boys with an accommodation for 650 students and a hostel for girl students , the Indira Priyadarsini Ladies Hostel with an. accommodation for 370 Girl students and a Research Scholars hostel Vasishta with accommodation for 100 scholars. The Chief Warden is the Chief Executive in the day-to-day functioning of the hostels. A warden associated with the hostel looks after the management and functioning of each hostel.
Ambedkar Memorial Library - It is the name of the Central Library. The Library has collection of 18,900 documents.The Library building consists of 3 Floors with total user space of 2130 sq. mts.

Xeroxing Service - Photocopying of the Library material is being provided to all the Library members.
Internet Service - Teachers and Research scholars are allowed for Non-heuristic browsing of the Net. Students are allowed for heuristic search to browse the Net on examining the academic purpose of their request.
Book Bank Service - Books supplied by Social Welfare Department, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh are available for lending to SC and ST students only.
INFLIBNET - Access to INFLIBNET Databases.
Computer Centre - It is facilitated with up-to-date Computer System ready to meet all IT needs.
University Science Instrumentation Centre - It maintains the Scientific Equipment/Instruments to facilitate unhindered research.
Social Causes - The Adult Education programme promotes adult literacy, health awareness, environmental consciousness, population education etc.

National / International Seminars - They are held on regular intervals with different topics
NSS - The National Service Scheme programme involves students in community work with social utility. It's regular activities include Plantation, Community Development, Health awareness, Personality improvement, Literacy campaign, Environmental Protection, Water harvestation, Patriotism, Communal Harmony, Campaign against social evils.
Placement - The institute offers a wide range of placement services to its students through recruiters.
Scholarships - The University offers a range of scholarships and other financial assistance to all its students.
Sports - It is equipped with a Gymnasium Hall. It also hosts All India Inter University Sports Meet.
Other Facilities include Post-Office, Primary School, Play Ground, Fair price Shop, Bank (SBI) etc.
