Indian Maritime University, Visakhapatnam/Vishakhapatnam is the extension of Indian Maritime University, Chennai, in other words it is the one of the campuses of the University - IMU Vishakhapatnam Campus. The University is a premier institute providing education in Maritime Field. Indian Maritime University, Visakhapatnam Campus was earlier known as National Ship Design and Research Centre (NSDRC) which was India’s premier ship design and maritime research institution. The campus has been established to promote maritime studies, training, research and extension.
The Visakhapatnam Campus consists of two schools, namely the School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (SNAOE) and the School of Maritime Design and Research (SMDR).
1. SNAOE – It handles the academic Graduate and Post Graduate Programs of the University in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Dredging and Harbour Engineering. They are also involved in organizing short term courses & programs.
2. SMDR – It is a Research and Development Centre of the university and as such a non-academic school. It handles several projects for the Ministry of Shipping, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Department of Science and Technology - Govt. of India. All the existing projects of National Ship Design and Research Centre were transferred to SMDR after the IMU campus was established.
IMU (NSDRC) Location
Presently Visakhapatnam Campus is located in the former NSDRC Office and residential complex on a 5 acre property located on the main road connecting Naval Base and Scindia junction (Hindustan Shipyard) on one side and HPCL and Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on the other side.
IMU Visakhapatnam Facilities
Hostel Facilities - The residential quarters of National Ship Design & Research Centre (NSDRC) employees, were renovated and furnished to serve as accommodation for the students. Separate accommodation for girls is also available.
Library - The Library of the National Ship Design and Research Organization, Visakhapatnam, was established in 1991 and renamed as Indian Maritime University Library, Visakhapatnam Campus, on 1st April 2009. It is regarded as one of the best Maritime Libraries in India. The library has a total collection of 40,000 documents consisting of Books, Text Books, Manuals, Ship Drawings, Articles, Project Reports, Standards, Reports, National and International Periodicals, Bound volumes, CD Roms, Equipment Catalogues, Video Lectures. The library use an integrated library management software LIBSYS for various library functions and LSDigital for managing digital resources. The Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) can be accessed through LAN and Internet from university website by the authorized users. External Membership is open to any Government and Corporate Offices in India.
Computer Laboratory - The computer lab fulfils the computational needs of the students and provides intranet and internet facility along with MS Office, AutoCAD and similar other software which is accessible to students 24x7.
Noise and Vibration Laboratory - The noise and vibration lab provide training to students for physically experiencing the theoretical understanding. Various instruments like Sound level meter (SLM) B & K Type 2250, LANXI Front end panel, Pulse Lab Shop (Playback Software), Accelerometer etc. assist students in getting practical knowledge.
Research Centre - Research at IMU Visakhapatnam is nurtured through academic programmes run by the departments and through sponsored research and consultancy projects funded by national organizations and industry.
Games and Sports - Volley ball court, shuttle court and badminton court are available for the students. Indoor games facilities are provided to the students in the hostel premises. A well equipped gym is also available.
