Adjectives

A word that is used to add something to the meaning of the Noun is known as an Adjective.

  1. Rajiv is an intelligent boy.
  2. There are eight teams in this tournament.

Words in bolds are adjectives.

Classification of Adjectives

Adjectives can be further classified in various categories

1. Adjective of Quantity or  Descriptive Adjective

Examples:

  1. Some sugar.
  2. Much weight.
  3. More salt enough coffee.
  4. Sufficient labour.
  5. Little milk.
  6. No sense.

The words given in bold are adjective of quantity.

2. Adjective of Quality

Examples:

Attributively:

  1. The old woman died.
  2. The yellow flower is lovely.
  3. A lazy boy is still sleeping.
  4. A clever boy was laughing.

Predicatively:

  1. The pen is hard.
  2. The shirt is new.
  3. This T-shirt is white.
  4. The girl is clever.

The words is given in bold are adjective of quality.

3. Numeral Adjective

Example

  1. The hand has five fingers.
  2. Few dogs like cold water.
  3. There are no pictures in this book.
  4. I have taught you many things.
  5. All men must die.
  6. Here are some ripe apples.
  7. Most boys like cricket.
  8. There are several mistakes in your exercise.

The words given in bold are numeral adjective

  • Definite Numeral Adjective
  • Indefinite Numeral Adjective
  • Distributive Numeral Adjective

4. Demonstrative Adjectives

This girl is pretty. This is a pretty girl.
That pencil is green. That is a green pencil.
These cows are black. These are black cows.
Those pens are blue. Those are blue pens.

What colour is your shiirt? What do you say?
Which city is yours? Which is your city?
Whose purse is that? Whose is that purse?
