Prepositions

A word that is usually used to show the relationship of a Noun or Pronoun with everything else in the sentence is known as a preposition.

  1. There is a dear in the farms
  2. I am found of butter milk.
  3. The little dog jumped off the chair.

In the above examples the words in bolds are all preposition. They are conveying the relationship between the Nouns with other things in the sentences.

Kind of Preposition

Preposition can be classified into following main kinds:

1. Simple Preposition

Ex:- At, By, For, From, In, Of, Off, Out, Till, To, Up, With etc are known as simple preposition.

  1. I have been working hard at arithmetic.
  2. The moon does not shine by its own light.
  3. I have known him for a long time.
  4. We suffered from your neglect.
  5. The work was done in haste.
  6. This is a matter of little importance.
  7. O God! Keep me from/off sin.
  8. What is that to me?

The letters written in bold are preposition.

2. Compound Preposition

Those preposition which are formed by prefixing a preposition to a Noun, an Adjective or an Adverb are known as compound preposition.

Ex:- About, Behind, Beyond, Inside, Outside, Underneath, Without, Within etc are all compound preposition.

  1. Let us talk about something else. For a while they talked about politics.

3. Phrase Preposition

Those prepositions which are a group of words used with the force of a single preposition are known as Phrase prepositions.

Ex:- According to, In accordance with, In place of, In spite of, In lieu of etc are phrase preposition.
