Many institutes offer them inclusive of each other. Beyond the academic level both the terms are used interchangeably and at times complement each other. AYUSH short form of the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, is a part of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of the Government of India. Established during March 1995, it establishes and maintains educational standards in the Indian Systems of Medicines and Homoeopathy colleges. It also works towards strengthening research and promoting the cultivation of medicinal plants. AYUSH performs its functions with various research councils, national institutes, councils and other bodies which come under its purview.

The education field of Yoga and Naturopathy were largely restricted to ashrams, communes, retreats and temples. The scenario has changed now and there is tremendous upward growth. Various gyms, health clubs, spas, yoga centres etc. have taken up towards the cause of these health and treatment system. Many universities have established a Yoga Department under which one year Teacher’s Training Programs is offered. Estimates put a count of 28 universities that impart Certificate, Diploma and Degree courses in Yoga and Naturopathy. These institutes are financed, promoted and supported by UGC.
