One of the Group 'A' Central Civil Service of India, The Indian Postal Service was formed in 1948. The cadre controlling authority of Indian Postal Services is Director General, Posts controlling a cadre size of nearly 573 posts of which direct recruitment is of nearly 75%.Indian Postal Service functions under the brand name of “India Post” and consists of nearly 154000 post offices throughout the country. This is one of the service that gives you opportunities to do service to your nation by introducing newer and better schemes for the nation especially when communication is changing at a very fast pace. Apart from postal services, the post offices also provide limited financial services to the countrymen. The officer of these services are responsible for Coordinating a number of government agencies, such as, the Railways and the Airlines for mail transportation and other such works required for the smooth functioning of the Postal Services. As far as financial services are concerned they undertake the work of coordination with the Department of Finance through its countrywide network of Post Offices and state governments to manage small savings. As this work of financial services involves a bit of risk during its movement from one place to another the officers concerned are also there to interact with the law and order agencies to ensure safety and security of cash and valuables in Post Offices, transmission of cash and police assistance in times of general unrest and strikes. For handling this work the officers concerned are provided with proper training during their probation period after getting selected for these services by clearing successfully the Civil Service exam. After putting on as probationers the offices of these services are upgraded based on time scale and in exceptional cases on the performance of the officers concerned as given below.

  • Senior Superintendent of Post Offices or Railway Mail in large district towns and Divisional Headquarters
  • Assistant Post Master General
  • Director
  • Post Master General of a 'Circle'
  • Senior Deputy Director Generals who are equivalent to Additional Secretary in a Ministry or member of Post and Telegraph Board (a total 8 in number)
  • Chairman of the Board
