Indian Railways being one of the largest railways in the world passing through the length and breadth of whole of the country needs proper protection against any kind of mischief by the anti-social elements. It becomes impossible to handle such a long pass ways if there is no coordination among the personnel manning the railways property. Thus to bring the coordination in the protection services separate RPF is created. Which is responsible for the security of the railway tracks, personnel and equipment. Assistant security officer is the position where a person gets his first posting after clearing the Civil Services Exam and getting training in the training centre for this particular job.
The Director General is at the apex of the service. This post is equivalent to that of the Additional Secretary.
