About Gulbarga University

Gulbarga University was established in 1980 by an Act of Karnataka State. Its jurisdiction extends to the five districts of Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur, Bellary and Koppal of Hyderabad Karnataka. Earlier it was a post-graduate centre of Karnatak University, Dharwad since 1970. It has 38 post-graduate departments and 4 post-graduate centres located at Krishnadevarayanagar, Bellary, Raichur and Bidar. Another post-graduate centre at Basavakalyan is on the anvil. The University enrols about 3500 students every year for various post-graduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in various disciplines. There are about 160 faculty members and about 700 technical and non-technical supporting staff. There are 305 colleges affiliated to this University which enrol graduate/diploma courses in arts, fine arts, music, social sciences, science & technology, commerce, education and law.

Location - The main campus is situated on a 860 acres of land, 6 kilo meters east of Gulbarga city.

Facilities

Hostels - Over 1,100 students stay in five gents hostels and three ladies hostels on the main campus. The lady research scholars are also provided with accommodation in the Women Hostel. The University has established Working Women Hostels in the Postgraduate Centres at Raichur, Bellary and Sandur to facilitate accommodation for all the lady students in the said PG Centers. The University hostels provide facilities like boarding, lodging, indoor games, newspaper/Magazines, reading rooms, visitors room, common prayer/recreation halls, television, telephones, separate kitchen, and dining hall etc. to ensure comfortable living for all students in all the hostels. In case of emergencies, doctors, medical facilities, and transportation are also provided.

Central Academic Computer Center - The Gulbarga University established Central Academic Computer Centre to cater the needs of Administrative sections and various departments. Students of Arts and Social Science Departments are given training in this center. It also provides Internet and Website facilities to all the concerned.

USIC - For the training of experimental scientists of high caliber and for sustaining the continuous interest of students in the environment of rapid advances of science and technology. To fulfill this aspects a well planned structure with appropriate facilities and personnel in all aspects of instrumentation has been thought of by UGC which is called University Science Instrumentation Center. Full term course is offered by USIC from the academic year 2008-2009. A P.G. Diploma in Embedded Systems & applications provides sound knowledge in hardware and software design. The course gives equal emphasis to hardware and software. The curriculum is latest which includes a module on wireless embedded systems also.

Library - The library has built a strong State-of-the-Art computer facilities with 140 workstations, Main frame servers and CD NAS Server provide excellent access to CD/DVD Databases, Internet, e-learning packages, full text e-resources and indigenous databases under network environment. The Library has been one of the active members of INFLIBNET Center, Ahmedabad (An Inter University Centre, UGC, New Delhi) and contributing the indigenous theses of the university in digital format to Vidyanidhi Project (Funded by Ford Foundation), University of Mysore, Mysore. The university has been provided with ERNET connectivity under UGC INFONET program for accessing about 4,500 e-journals and databases with 2 mbps leased line connectivity. It has about 2,15,000 books, Current Periodicals - 430, Bound Volumes - 8,500, Theses/Dissertations - 6,500, Microfiche - 2,042, Reports - 150, CD-ROMs - 16, E-Journals - 4500+

S.C./S.T. Cell - The SC/ST Cell was established with the financial assistance of UGC. This cell helps in providing amelioration to SC/ST students of Gulbarga University by giving scholarships and financial assistance

Prasaranga - The Prasaranga Unit of the University looks after publication and extension lecture services. Prasaranga has been encouraging authors, poets and artists of five districts of Gulbarga Division by awarding cash prizes and medals every year on Rajyothsava Day. Important books and reference materials on contemporary topics are published periodically for benefit of society and the stakeholders. The Prasaranga has also been carrying out extension activities by arranging popular lectures in villages and small towns on topics or contemporary relevance. Publications of Prasaranga can be purchased from extension center established in University Canteen building, Thirteen Endowments have been instituted by philanthropists and institutions of this region and Endowment lectures are held regularly by inviting eminent scholars from the various fields.

Guest House
- The University regularly organises many scientific meetings, conferences, seminars and workshops. In addition to these, many faculty members/scientists from reputed national and international organizations visit the University on exchange programmes. The guest house has two independent buildings. In Kailasabhavan Guest House there are four suites, four double rooms and eight single rooms and the other Silver Jublee Guest House, has forty eight single rooms, all with attached facilities. The guest house also has catering facilities with kitchen and well furnished dining hall attached.

Health Centre - The University has a Health Centre with two Medical Officers, one Lady Medical Officer, one Nurse, two Technicians, one Pharmacist and other supporting staff. It has facilities of ECG, X-Ray scanners etc. Each student undergoes medical examination every year and is provided medical help as and when necessary. Each staff member is medically examined while joining the duties. Free medical service to the staff and students is provided. In case of serious ailments, the patients are referred to several leading designated hospitals throughout the country and admissible medical charges for advanced treatment and operations are reimbursed by the University. Many people from neighbouring villages avail free medical facilities as a part of community service by the University Health Centre. NSS students organize special medical camps on health, AIDS/HIV awareness regularly as part of their community service in collaboration with the Health Centre.

Sports - The University has established excellent infrastructural facilities in sports. The Physical Education Department has well qualified staff members, coaches and instructors to guide the motivated sports persons. Excellent indoor stadium having four courts and a well-equipped gymnasium with a capacity of 1750 audience in the gallery has been established. The University also has an outdoor stadium with 400 metre track for various events. The University has developed a Football ground, two Hockey grounds, two Volleyball courts, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Basketball courts, Badminton tennis courts, Foot Ball, Tennis court, two Cricket grounds, four table tennis courts. Besides, modern gymnasium facilities are also provided for the benefit of the students and the faculty. The University hosts various inter University, state, regional, national and international level sports and games.

Achievements

The university library received Dr. Padhya Best University Library Award for 2007 instituted by Indian Library Association, New Delhi.
