Universities in Karnataka have always remain the first choice of a large number of students from all over the country lead by Mysore University – the first ever university started in the state of Karnataka. University in Karnataka are known for their state of art infrastructure, vide spectrum of courses in practically every stream of eduction and some of the world best faculty in their ranks. List of Karnataka Universities include a number of renowned universities like Karnataka University, the Mysore University – established in 1916 -, Bangalore University –founded in 1964- followed by Mangalore University which was established in 1980.
Apart from these general universities providing education in arts, science, commerce, law, medicine the Karnataka Universities also have two Universities of Agricultural Sciences- the first one at Bangalore in 1965 and the other in Dharwad in 1986 which offer specialization programs in different branches of agriculture. In 1991, a Kannada University at Hampi was set up to promote the study of Kannad language, art and culture.
Many of Karnataka Universities like the universities in Bangalore, Mysore and Gulbarga have been awarded five star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) -an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission- that help to attain greater acceptance of the students.
