The Institute was established by Govt. of India as National College of Physical Education in 17th August 1957, the centenary year of the War of Independence, and located at Gwalior, where Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, a valiant heroine of the war, had laid her life. The Institute was named after her as a tribute to her role in the glorious freedom struggle. It is also known as Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education. The main purpose of establishing this institute was to up - grade the status of physical education by offering degree and post-graduate course for the first time in the country. Bachelor's degree programme was started in 1957 and a two year Master's Degree course was introduced in 1963. In 1980 it became the first institution in India to offer one year degree programme of Master of Philosophy in Physical Education.The Institute started as an affiliated college of the Vikram University, Ujjain and then came to the fold of Jiwaji University, Gwalior in 1964. In recognition of its unique status and character and to facilitate its further growth, the college was conferred the status of an Autonomous College of Jiwaji University, Gwalior in 1982. In further recognition of the educational services rendered by the Institute in the field of Physical Education, sports and research it was decided by the Govt. of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development under UGC Act to give it the status of Deemed to be a university w.e.f. September 1995. On 14 Jan’09, the Institute was renamed as Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education - LNIPE under Section 3 of U.G.C. Act, 1965. The Institute is the only Deemed to be a University in the field of Physical Education in the country. The duration of the Bachelor’s Degree course, known as B.P.E. (Bachelor of Physical Education) was initially for 3 years. To bring in line with the directives of NCTE and also similarity with some other Professional Degree Courses, the duration of the course has been extended from 3 years to 4 years with effect from the ensuing Academic Session i.e. 2003-2004 onward. The Institute campus covers an area of about 153 acres and is fully residential.
Location and Transportation - Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education campus is known as Shaktinagar and is situated on Mela Road (Formerly Known as Race Course Road) at a distance of about one kilometer from Gwalior Railway Station. Gwalior is on Agra Mumbai National Highway. It is on the main North-South Rail Route and is served by regular flights from Delhi and Mumbai. Gwalior is about 300 kms from India's national capital New Delhi.

Facilities
Hostels - The Institute has five men's hostels and one women's hostel. It is mandatory for all the students to reside in the hostels and take their meals in the mess run by the Institute. At present hostel accommodation is provided free of charge to BPE, MPE & M.Phil students subject to their satisfactory conduct at the Institute. In case of misconduct the student may be asked to pay hostel fee as prescribed by the Institute for the whole academic session or part there of. It is mandatory for all the students to reside in the hostels and take their meals in Mess run by the Institute. Rules for staying in the hostel and dining in the mess will be supplied to the newly admitted students.
Library - It has a separate section for post graduate and research scholars. It is also holding micro plus thesis and broad back volumes of periodicals. The central library has about 43000 books and brand volumes. The central library also has 58 sets of multi volume encyclopaedia on physical education and its allied areas. The central library subscribes to 80 national and international journal of the field. The library also provides indexing services reprographic services and internet facilities to its users, the central library is well equipped with LAN and computers, microfilms, readers, C.C.T.V. anti theft security system and fire alarm system.
Sports - The university has a state-of-the-art Sports Infrastructure. It has spacious and well laid play fields for major outdoor games and sports. Facilities include Squash Court, Indoor Cricket Pitch, Cricket Field, Football Fields, Hockey Field etc. It also has a 25 mtrs. Indoor Swimming Pool with dedicated filtration and circulation plant with Locker and Shower Rooms. The indoor Gymnasium Complex consists of 2 Gymnasium Halls, 1 Wrestling Hall, 2 Weight Training Rooms and a Test and Measurement Labs.
Health Centre - The Institute Health Centre provides treatments on a nominal fee for ordinary injuries and ailments under the supervision of resident doctors. Physiotherapy treatment is also available. In case of emergency, the students are referred to the Govt. Hospital for treatment. In such cases, they are required to meet the cost of treatment themselves. Medical Officer / Wardens are authorized to sign on behalf of the parents / Guardians for administration of anaesthesia or any form of medical treatment involving risk in an emergency. All the students are required to follow the Institute rules regarding Health and Medical Services.

The Research laboratories are well equipped with Modern and Sophisticated, indigenous and imported equipment's. The Research is one of the major parts of the curriculum at the Master's level. The students have been undertaking Research since the inception of the Master's Course. A total of 18 Research Projects have been approved for MPE and M.Phil Scholar this year.

Co-Curricular Activities - The University promotes cultural and literary activities through Cultural Club and Literary Society for the students by providing them an opportunity to participate in dramatics, Music, debates, symposia, quiz competition etc. The students are also involved extensively in activities like NCC, NSS, Camping and Adventure programmes to develop leadership qualities and all-round personality.
Admission and Reservations - The Institute is co-educational and admits candidates from all over India as well as from foreign countries. For all courses, 15% seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes, 7.5% for scheduled Tribes, and 9% for OBC subject to the availability of eligible candidates. Directives issued by the Government of India from time to time regarding policy on reservation for SC/ST/OBC candidates are followed by the University.
Self Supporting Scheme/Payment Seats - The University has kept certain seats reserved under the category of self-supporting scheme also known as payment seats mentioned for each course under departmental details. Further, the seats under self-supporting scheme will be made available only to those candidates who qualify in the admission test but fail to be selected under regular seats. Seats under this scheme will be filled up purely on merit basis among those who opt for the said scheme.
Foreign Candidates - Foreign candidates applying under cultural exchange programme or in personal capacity shall be admitted on the basis of their credentials, attainment of minimum qualifying marks in admission test and meeting acceptable standards in medical examination.
ASC - Academic Staff College (ASC) was established by UGC at Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (Deemed University), Shakti Nagar, Gwalior – 474002 in February 2000. The college was meant for running refresher courses for Physical Education Teachers of different Universities and Colleges in India as well as for the Directors of Sports in different Universities and Colleges in India. Simultaneously it also runs orientation programmes for the teachers of colleges and universities in different subject areas.
Residential Facilities - The campus has sufficient number of residential quarters to house its faculty, officers and other employees.
Other Facilities - The campus also has a fully furnished guest house, a facility centre, a Bank with ATM and a Post Office.
