About Jiwaji University

Jiwaji University is a residential and an Affiliating University. It was established on 23rd May 1964, under the provision of M.P. Government Ordinance no. 15 of 1963. Dr. Sarwapalli Radhakrishanan, the then President of India, laid the foundation stone of the University Campus on 11th December 1964. The institution was christened after the name of Kailashwasi Shrimant Jiwajirao Scindia as a standing memorial to his persona. The sprawling campus of over 225 acres of land at Naulakha Parade ground is a generous contribution of Scindia family, in particular Kailashwasi Maharaja Shrimant Jiwaji Rao Scindia and late Rajmata Shrimati Vijayaraje Scindia. The motto of the university is embedded in its logo 'Vidya Prapyate Tejah'. The territorial jurisdiction of the affiliation extends to six districts of Gwalior and Chambal Division, viz., Gwalior, Morena, Bhind, Guna, Shivpuri and Datia. It has more than 300 colleges under its affiliation.

Jiwaji University is the First University in the state of Madhya Pradesh to implement self supporting programmes in the form of job oriented courses in various disciplines like Instrumentation and commercial methods of Industrial analysis, Environmental Chemistry, Microbiology, B.A. in Jyotirvigyan, M.Sc. Medical Plants and Herbal Resource Management etc. All School of Studies and Centres are imparting education in basic, advanced and Job oriented courses. Majority of the courses in the School of Studies are based on semester system in which continuous evaluation of the students is carried out which keeps them busy in their studies round the year. The University also running M.Phil courses in most of the conventional subjects. The most special department of the university is SOS in Neuroscience which conducts India's only DBT-sponsored neuroscience teaching program at university level. The department was initiated by department of biotechnology, New Delhi and has many projects in collaboration with CSIR, ICMR, DBT, DST, DRDO and UGC labs and R&D. There are 10 seats per year and the meritorious students are provided with Rs. 1200 monthly DBT studentship.

Transportation - Gwalior is located at the main track of North-Central railways and very well connected to all parts of the country.

  1. Trains staring from Delhi run towards Chennai, Banglore, Goa, Trivendrum, Kanyakumari, Mumbai, Pune, Bhuwaneshwar, Raipur, Bilaspur, Vijaywada, Hyderabad, Vishakhapattanam, etc. stop at Gwalior.
  2. Various trains strat from Gwalior towards Kolkata, Mumbai, Baruani, Kota, Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur, etc.
  3. It is also well connected by road and situated at Agra-Bombay highway. It is 120 Kms. south of Agra and 317 Kms. from Delhi.

Jiwaji University Distance Education

Jiwaji University’s Institute of Distance Education offers various short term, long term, graduate and postgraduate education programmes. These are imparted through the Institute located within the Jiwaji university campus and also at different Study Centres. These courses are run under the directions of Distance Education Council, New Delhi. The courses are conducted by providing Study materials, home assignments and arranging contact programmes for the students. At the end of the term the examinations are conducted by the university along with the regular students. A separate Prospectus is available for the distance education courses and it can be obtained from the office of Institute of Distance Education, Jiwaji University, Gwalior or their Study centres in affiliated colleges. Application form can also be downloaded from the university website.

Facilities


Hostels – There are 4 hostels - mrignayani girls hostel, tatya tope girls hostel, captain roop singh boys hostel and arya bhatta boys hostel. All are situated within the campus. The hostels have all the required facilities with well furnished rooms.

Central Library - It has a collection of over 1,40,000 books and about 8000 bound volumes of research journals. It also contains a section of unpublished theses. Presently more than 142 Indian and Foreign journals are being subscribed. The Library also contains Internet access, microfilm reader, 16-mm projector, and a number of films on various subjects. Beside Central library, each School of Studies has a library, well equipped with books and journals, useful for advanced study. There is 1 separate reading cum reference room, facility for internet and allied services. The facility of INFLIBNET is available to the researchers of the university for accessing around 500 research journals and information (UGC INFONET) etc.
 

Research and Consultancy – Most of the science departments are well equipped with most advance instrumentation facilities for research as well as teaching. A few important ones are -  Transmission Electron Microscope, X-ray unit, Vacuum coating unit etc. Several research projects sponsored by the Government of India and the State Government funding agencies, like UGC, DST, CSIR, DOE, DAE, DBT, ICMR, ICHR, MPCOST, CCRUM, MPSBB-Bhopal etc. have been sanctioned and completed successfully by various schools of studies. As many as 89 theses have been awarded Ph.D. in past 3 years. The research department has completed 28 projects in past 3 years with a total budget outlay of Rs.72,00,000.

The University has established 4 centres for research and teaching namely:

  1. Virah Mihir Centre for Mathematics.
  2. Tansen Institute of Performing Arts.
  3. Regional Study Centre for Culture and Heritage.
  4. Neuroscience Centre.

Computer Centre – The computer centre is well equipped with the network of LAN and UNIX incorporating the latest hardware technologies. The centre provides Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application and few short terms course in various advanced areas of Computer. It also provides central computing facility to university teaching departments and research activities.

Health Facilities - The University Health Centre, situated in the campus provides First Aid and other basic medical facilities to all students, staff members, employees and their wards. A Medical Officer is available for consultation during morning and evening hours at the University Health Centre.

Sports Complex – The sports complex of university is named as Mahadji Scindia Sports Complex. The University organises regular Yogic classes and scientific coaching camps in different games and sports. The Sports Complex has 2 floodlight basketball courts with portable uprights, 3 floodlight tennis courts, 4 volleyball courts (caged), 1 hockey ground.

USIC - University Science and Instrumentation Centre imparts workshop, training to the students of Institute of Engineering of the university. It also provides technical support to the research students of various disciplines. Academic activities related to the training to the teachers and technical staff of the universities and colleges of Madhya Pradesh have also been taken by this centre in collaboration with WRIC, Mumbai. The centre has been organizing course on refrigeration technology for the students and technicians. A small Library maintained by the centre provides students access for data of electronic components. The centre also takes up jobs from private industries and parties and charges nominal amount.

Career and Counselling Cell – The University is providing opportunities for career development of students by organising workshops, seminars interactive meetings, campus selection by leading firms, industries and companies.

Admission to N.R.I and Sponsored Seats -

  • For admission to N.R.I. seats candidates should have minimum required percentages in qualifying exams. He/She is not required to appear in written exam.
  • For admission to sponsored seats the candidate should have the minimum eligibility as laid down for respective courses. However, he/she will not be required to appear in the entrance test. The candidate will be required to produce the sponsorship letter from his / her employer before counselling.
  • Candidates will be considered sponsored only if they secure sponsorship from foreign / Indian / state government and the institution/s directly or indirectly under their control or if the fees is paid in foreign currency for the payment seat.
  • The candidate will have to apply on the application form attached with this prospectus and will have to pay the fee as prescribed for payment seat along with a sponsorship fee of Rs. 25000/- at time of admission. He/she will be required to take leave for the duration of the course.
