About Karnatak University

Karnatak University was established initially at Mumbai in 1949. It was later shifted to Dharwad in October, 1949 and Karnatak University had its official inauguration in March 1950. Covering a vast expanse of 750 acres on the hill named 'Chota Mahabaleshwar' one of seven hillocks on which Dharwad is beautifully perched inviting comparison with Rome. The campus has 48 Departments that have come up during the half century or so of its historic existence. The University in its formative years had the leadership of Dr. D.C. Pavate as the Vice-Chancellor (1954-1967 ) who gave it a shape.UGC recently has granted an outlay of rupees 25 crores. The newly created Departments like Genetics, Microbiology, Reproductive Health Management bid fair to do well besides the established departments of yore with a track record of Academic Excellence. The Karnatak University has Postgraduate Centers at Belgaum on a sprawling campus with 178 acres, Postgraduate Centre at Torvi, Bijapur on 200 acres with another Postgraduate Centre at Karwar 6 acres, catering to fisheries, needless to mention P.G. Programmes in leading colleges at Dandeli, Bagalkot, Gadag, Haveri, Bijapur, Dharwad, Hubli, Ilkal, Jamkhandi and Belgaum. The second oldest in the state, Karnatak University with 48 P.G. Departments, 5 P.G. Centers, 5 Constituent College : 256 Affiliating Colleges with 264 P.G. teachers, 4252 UG teachers, 4531 PG students and 1,01,142 UG students in a community of academics, all drawn in the adventure of learning from the seven districts of Northern Karnataka. Karnatak University Campus is spread over about 750 acres of land.

Facilities

Hostels - Hostel facilities for students are provided. There are three girls hostels, one working women hostel, and three boys hostels, and 35 students capacity kitchenette (for self cooking) on the campus. There is also one hostel run by social welfare department for boys.

International Student Advisor - Karnatak University, Dharwad has an office of the International Students Advisor. This is an assignment of the Indian Council for cultural Relations, Ministry of External Affairs Government of India. This office is a link between Foreign Students, studying in Post-Graduate Departments of Karnatak University, and in constituent colleges and the University Administration.

Cooperative Store - The Cooperative Store is situated in the premises of Karnatak University. It is run by University on no-profit no-loss basis for the general public. It sells all the items of everyday use like toiletries, stationary etc.

Health Center - Health Center has been provided with modern facilities such as, computerized ECG Machine, Electronic Blood-Sugar, Blood-Cholesterol and Urine analysis Machines. Specials services provided are paediatrics, ENT surgeon, general surgeon, physician, gynecologist and dermatologist visit the center once in a week.

Sports Facility - University has provided Recreation and Sports facilities for all the students, teaching and non-teaching staff members. There are good play grounds - tennis courts (two), Basket ball Court, Swimming Pool, Volley Ball Court, Gymnasium, Indoor Shuttle Badminton Court, Table Tennis facility, on the Campus. Post Graduate Gymkhana is equipped with T.V., Radio and indoor games, maintained by Directorate of students welfare.

Students Welfare Section - The Karnatak University strives to maintain the standards of excellence as an Academic Institution. In this regard the University ensures that the best possible environment exists for all students, irrespective of their socio-economics class. For this purpose the University has established a STUDENTS WELFARE SECTION to execute University polices concerned to welfare of the students. Nearly 5000 post graduate and 80,000 undergraduate students, studying in the constituent and affiliated colleges, are covered under the wide variety of welfare Programmes run by the University. Students Welfare Section has a great deal to offer to students. It administers a number of University policies concerned with hostels, welfare schemes, youth festivals, student complaints etc. Approximately Rs.15,00,000/- budgetary provision is made every year to oversee all aspects of students welfare.

USIC - University Scientific and Instruments Center facilitates technical, scientific, education, research, accurate observations and measurements. It needs the availability of precision instruments of high standard which are becoming prohibitively expensive for any single science department to posses. In addition to their need in research it is also mandatory to train the students in handling such precision equipments so that they get adequate training to pursue their career in science and technology in future. These instruments inculcated many branches of science such as electrical, electronics, mechanical, optics etc.

Central workshop - The Central workshop was established on 15th August 1959 an instrumentation workshop, wherein fabrication and repairs of scientific instruments and apparatus for the use of post-graduate science departments of the University, are undertaken. As per the requirements of the research scholars designing is taken up before the fabrication. Instruments so fabricated are delivered to the departments concerned. If any modification is required, during the course of experiments it will be carried out by this workshop. In addition, repair works of instruments and apparatus are also undertaken. The workshop has the following sections: Glass blowing, Mechanical, Electrical, Welding, Carpentry, Smith .

University Computer Center - The Computer Centre of the Karnatak University, Dharwad established in the year 2007. The center was established with the objective of providing computational environment for the academic and research community of the university. The Centre offers training and software development apart from being a support service for the faculty, students and staff.

Achievements

The University today is rated as one of the handful Universities in the Country with a potential for Excellence, as identified by NAAC by giving a five star status which only a handful of Universities have been able to achieve.
