Kuvempu University was established on 29 June 1987 by an act of the Karnataka State Legislature through an Amendment No.28/1976 dated 29 January 1989 under the Karnataka State University Act 1976. The university is named after Kuvempu, a renowned poet in Kannada. He was native of Shivamogga district and also vice-chancellor of University of Mysore. Kuvempu's son-in-law Prof. K. Chidananda Gowda is a former Vice-Chancellor of this University. The University was recognized by the UGC in 1994 and is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities. It offers 45 Post-Graduate Programmes, 4 P.G.Diploma and one Under-Graduate programme. It has 41 Post-Graduate departments of studies in the faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Education and Law. The University has 80 affiliated colleges, three constituent colleges (among three, one is autonomous college) and other one autonomous college, one B.P.Ed. college, and 17 B.Ed. colleges under its jurisdiction spread over 2 districts of Shimoga and Chikmagalur. The Academic block on the main campus houses the Post-Graduate departments of studies in English, Political Science, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, MSW, Economics, Sociology, English Language Teaching, Journalism & Mass Communication. Constitute Institutes
Post-Graduate Centre, Kadur - A new Post-Graduate Centre at Kadur started from the academic year 2007-08. Initially three courses namely Master of Business Economics(MBE), Master of Business Administration(MBA) and M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry have been started in the premises of Govt.Junior College. For the purpose of establishing PG Centre at Kadur, the State Government has allotted 65 acres of land adjacent to Kadur town and also released Rs.2 crore for the development of the P.G.Centre.
Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College and Sahyadri Science College, Shimoga - Sahyadri Arts and Science Colleges and Sahyadri Science College, erstwhile Government institutions are now constituent Colleges of Kuvempu University. These premier Colleges of this region have completed 66 years of existence. Among the celebrities who are alumni of the Colleges are Dr. U.R. Ananthamurthy, Jnana Peetha Awardee, Prof. C.N.R. Rao, eminent scientist, Sri K.V. Subbanna, Magsaysay Awardee and others. In fact the Colleges have contributed illustrious persons to every important fields. Directorate of Distance Education - The Directorate of Correspondence Courses of Kuvempu University is one of the first to provide P.G.Science courses from 2003-04, in 7 different subjects. It is also offering a number of need based P.G.Diploma courses and Under graduate courses such as B.A., B.Com., B.Sc., B.B.M. It has also introduced L.L.M., B.L.I.Sc., M.L.I.Sc., MBA, M.A. Education and M.Sc. Applied Chemistry courses, Along with some of the entirely new specialized courses at the PG and Diploma levels, such as B.Sc. & M.Sc. (IT), in collaboration with UET, Bangalore and NIIT, Fashion Technology & Interior Designs in collaboration with the JD Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi. Location and Transportation - Jnana Sahyadri, the main campus of Kuvempu University is located at Shankaraghatta at a distance of 28 kms. from Shimoga town, the district headquarters and 18 kms. from Bhadravathi, the well-known industrial town. The campus is only 2 kms. from the magnificent Bhadra Reservoir across the river Bhadra, one of the important life lines of the area. The main campus can be reached by using the private bus service. Shimoga, Bhadravathi and Tarikere towns are close to the campus and are well connected by rail.

Library - The modern and well equipped building of Library in Kuvempu University offers excellent infrastructure facilities in reading, borrowing and reference to the students, teachers and research scholars of all the departments. Over 69,011 volumes and 251 current periodicals are available. The library has kept pace with modernisation by introducing CD ROM data base, internet and e-mail facilities. It is also a nodal centre for INFLIBNET, thus having access to resources sharing. Bound back-volumes of journals are also available. The library is having access to 2000 e-journals on line under UGC-INFONET programme.
Health Centre - The University has a well equipped Health Centre with sufficient Male & Female doctors who are assisted by the necessary staff. The centre has an out patient wing and in patients beds. The health centre has the preliminary diagnostic facilities and on line ECG/ Medical advise support of Narayana Hrudalaya is established. Directorate Of Student Welfare - Kuvempu University has maintained an excellent student friendly ambience and assigns top priority to student welfare. A directorate of student welfare has been established to plan and monitor student welfare activities. Presently headed by a faculty member, the directorate plays a key role in award of scholarships and fellowships to students, in organising career guidance and consultancy programmes. A special feature is that every year 20 students are deputed to attend the cultural camp organised by Neenasam, Heggodu, a nationally known centre for theatrical and cultural activities.
SC, ST Cell & OBC Cell - The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Cell has been established to provide special assistance to both students and staff belonging to the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. The convener and the members of the cell are from the faculty. The cell sanctions fellowships and scholarships to SC, ST, & OBC research students and also monitors the implementation of reservation and other policies and measures meant to help persons belonging to the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. The Cell also organises special remedial classes and coaching classes for the competitive examinations.
National Service Scheme - Kuvempu University NSS wing is rated as one of the best in Karnataka State. There is a programme coordinator whose office is presently housed in front of the Sahyadri College, Shimoga. The NSS wing provides training to the under-graduate students by organising annual camps, national camps and socially useful programmes. It also coordinates the adult literacy programmes in which the students participate actively. The NSS Wing has won a number of awards at the State and higher levels including the Best University in NSS. The Post-Graduate unit of NSS has students from the Post-Graduate departments on the campus. It is supervised by a co-ordinator (from the faculty) and his team.
Sports & Indoor Stadium - Inter - Collegiate Competitions in almost all the games and sports are organised regularly, in which maximum number of students from the affiliated colleges are participating. About 25 teams in various sports disciplines are taking part in the Inter University competitions. The Director of Physical Educations supervises collegiate sports activities. Sports activities for the Post-Graduate students are organised by the P.G. Sports Secretary under the supervision of Director of Physical Education. The University has established a well equipped Indoor Sports Complex, which is having facilities for all indoor games including Volley Ball, Basket Ball, Gymnastics and modern Multi Gymnasium. Apart from this, it houses office of the Director of Physical Education. Secretary of P.G. Sports Section, Chairman and Class rooms for both M.P.Ed. and B.P.Ed. Courses. This also accomplished with 24 well furnished dwelling rooms with attach bath. The construction of a outdoor stadium is in progress.
Student Housing - There are two Post-Graduate men's hostels and two women's hostel on the main campus. The working omen hostel on the campus also provides accommodation to students and research scholars. The hostel for students belonging to backward Classes and Minorities established near the main campus by the State Government provides hostel facility exclusively for the Post-Graduate students of the University. University Employment Information And Guidance Bureau - In order to help students plan their career and seek placement, the Employment Information and Guidance Bureau has been established on the campus. It functions under the supervision of a Director who is from the faculty and assisted by the deputy chief and assistant chief who are appointed by the government. The Bureau circulates information regarding employment opportunities, competitive examinations, UGCJRF and National Eligibility Test, State Level Eligibility Test etc. It also organises employment counselling sessions. The Post-Graduate students, on completion of the P.G. Degrees are required to register at the Bureau. In order to motivate the student community towards the competitive examinations the bureau organises free coaching classes for various competitive examinations such as I.A.S., K.A.S., Banking and Staff Selection Commission.
Research - Kuvempu University offers M.Phil & Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree in various subjects relating to the main branch of knowledge studied for Masters degree. However, candidates willing to do the research in a subject other than the one studied for the master's degree but which is of interdisciplinary nature can also apply. Student Counselling - Kuvempu University has introduced student counselling at different levels. Apart from the course counselling during admissions there is also continuous expert counselling for students to help them overcome their problems.
Placement - Many Post Graduate departments of the university have been organising campus interviews to help students to find placement. The university has now established a full fledged Placement Cell in order to monitor placement services for the students.
Civil Services Examinations Training - In order to motivate students to seek administrative careers and to equip them to face the exams, the university organises training for civil services and other competitive examinations. The training includes counselling and essential skill development apart from academic guidance.
Canteen Facilities - There is a well furnished canteen on the campus with a seating capacity of 50. Catering is available during the working hours of the University.
University Guest House - The location of the Guest House is scenically attractive. It is situated on a hillock overlooking the backwaters of the Bhadra reservoir. It provides an elegant view of the entire project area. It is fully air-conditioned and has excellent catering facilities.
Extra-Curricular Activities - The University assigns high priority to extra curricular activities on the campus. These activities are organised by the Extra-Curricular Activities Association which consists of a coordinator from the faculty and student representatives from all the Post-Graduate departments. A highlight of the activities the annual youth festival (Sahyadri Festival) meant for students of the affiliated colleges and the P.G. Departments. Participants selected here represent the University at inter-university youth festivals.
Earn & Learn Scheme - To supplement the financial needs & to make the students time useful earn & learn scheme is introduced. These schemes include -
The Faculty Club - The Faculty Club has been established for organizing programmes of academic interest for the members of the teaching faculty. Special lectures by eminent scholars, scientists and statesmen are organised throughout the year. The lectures are followed by discussions in which the faculty members participate. In addition colloquia are organised under arts and science faculties separately every month in which teachers make presentations on their current areas of research in the presence of an invited expert in the field. This helps the faculty members to share insights from the research work being carried out.
Language Lab - To train the students towards proficiency in English and other foreign language a modern fully computerized language lab has been established in the Academic Block. Trained instructors are provided to guide the students. The students are expected to get the proficiency to face the global challenges.
Studio - To facilitate the student's technology in education and Journalism & Mass communication hi-tech studio work is under progress.
