About National Institute of Technology - NIT Karnataka

National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, Surathkal was established on August 6, 1960 as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) with 3 UG programs (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical) under affiliation to University of Mysore. Sri U. Srinivasa Mallya, a visionary and a philanthropist, established Karnataka Regional Engineering College (now NITK) at Surathkal. In recognition of his role as the founder and architect of NITK, the Campus is named after him as 'Srinivasnagar'. In the year 2002, it was elevated to status of Deemed University and renamed as National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal. NITK is governed by the Board of Governors which consists of representatives of the Government of India, Government of Karnataka, Alumni, Industry and other nominees. The Chairman of the Board is nominated by the Government of India. The Director is the administrative head of the Institute. The Institute is spread amid 300 acres of sylvan surroundings with the picturesque Western Ghats on the east and sun-kissed sands of the Arabian Sea to the west. Main building is the core region of academic area. It is located in front of the main gate. It consists of Board of Director's chamber, class rooms, academic section, admission section. Additional Teaching Block (ATB) is situated left of main building which has seminar hall & class rooms. NITK is a residential Engineering Institute with Staff Quarters consisting of more than 200 residences with both independent houses and flats.

Transportation - NITK is easily accessible from all parts of the country. Being situated right on the NH 17, the Institute and Campus is very well connected by bus routes to the North and South.

  • Mangalore is also connected by NH 48 to Bangalore and there are over 200 luxury buses plying daily between Mangalore and Bangalore.
  • Surathkal, on the Konkan Railway (linking Mumbai to Kanyakumari), is the nearest rail station and is a stopover for most trains passing through Konkan Railway. While Surathkal and Kankanady Junction are the closest alighting points for visitors coming by train from the North; Mangalore Central is the Terminus for many trains from South India.
  • The Mangalore Airport is just 20 km from the Campus and there are flights to Mumbai, Cochin, Calicut, Goa and Bangalore everyday, with connections to the rest of the country. Direct International flights are available to Muscat, Dubai and Doha.

Centers of Excellence

These are:

Centre For Sustainable Technologies - The Centre is involved in Research and policy advice, Capacity Building and Training, Testing and consultancy etc.

CDRR - Centre For Disaster Risk Reduction is open to all researchers at the national and international level who are pursuing investigations on various aspects of disaster risk reduction. Collaboration is being maintained through joint research projects, theme meetings, workshops and seminars. Emphasis is given to assimilation and dissemination of knowledge on disaster risk reduction and providing effective training to the community. The Centre also conducts short term courses/seminars/workshops/conferences.

CMR - Centre For Materials Research promotes inter-disciplinary  research in materials science and technology involving faculty members from all departments of the Institute. The Centre will acquire equipments and create facilities to support collaborative research through sponsored research projects. The Centre aims to develop new materials for engineering applications and build a technology base in select areas of materials science.

Hostels - The NITK has Eleven Hostel Blocks in all. There are Six Hostel Blocks for the Under-Graduate Boys, Two for Post-Graduates and Three For Girls. There are a total of one thousand four hundred (1400) U.G. students, three hundred and ten (310) P.G. students and nearly Two Hundred Girls staying in the various Hostel Blocks of NITK Hostels. Hostel Fees is accepted in the form of Cash or as Demand Draft. The student has to pay some yearly and some semester wise fees.

Hostel Facilities:

  • The Campus Network Backbone reaches all Hostels and the Institute is giving network connections to all Hostels in phases.
  • All Hostel Blocks have been provided with External Telephone Facilities. There are Two (one for incoming calls and the other for outgoing calls called using the India Telephone card) External Phones and an Internal Phone for each Block.
  • Each Block is provided with a colour TV with cable connection.
  • The Ladies Hostel Block in addition to the above facilities are provided with Washing Machine and a Computer Centre with Ten Computers connected to the Internet through the Campus wide Optical Fibre Network. This facility will soon be extended to the Boys Hostels as well.
  • There are Seven Messes of different types provided in the Hostel Blocks with the necessary infrastructure of men and materials. The different types of Messes provided are the Mysore Mess for South Indian style, Bombay Mess for North Indians and the Non-Vegetarian Mess. The Hostel provide for full participation of students in the management of the Mess, as its beneficiaries. The Mess expenditure is shared on dividing basis. Each student has to be member of any one of the Mess during his stay in the Hostel. The Mess Bill has to be paid in advance for the whole semester.
  • With a view to provide Medical Relief to the hostellers , a medical welfare scheme is set up and medical relief to the extent of Rs 3000/- per student per year is provided in case of hospitalization of any hosteller in Surathkal or at Mangalore hospitals.
  • The Hostel also has Reading Rooms well stocked with all the leading dailies as well as a wide range of magazines. The reading rooms are located in the IV Hostel Block For the U.G. Boys, in the PG Hostel block for the PG students and also another in the Girls Block to cater to the needs of Girl students of the Institute. The Reading Room is managed by the Reading Room Committee.

Library - The NITK Library is housed in a spacious three-storied building adjoining the Main building of the Institute on the Southern side.The library, with a floor area of 2,758 Sq mtrs. is segregated into two wings. Three Reading Halls can accommodate a total of  600 students. A computer terminal provided at the counter near the entrance can be used to gain information regarding status of availability and particulars of any book. The in-house activities of the Library have been computerised using the LIBSYS software. A bar-coded system of issue and return of books is currently in use.

CCC - Central Computer Centre is situated in front of SJA(Silver Jubilee Auditorium). Central Computer Centre has 24x7 load balanced internet connectivity comprising of four E1 ( 2 Mbps 1:1) lines from BSNL Campus wide LAN ( 10 Gbps backbone) reaching academic buildings, residences and Hostel rooms.

TEQIP - The Institute is facilitated with 'Technical Education Quality Improvement Program' of Government of India aims to up-scale and support ongoing efforts of Government of India to create an environment in which engineering institutions selected under the Programme can achieve their own targets for excellence and sustain the same with autonomy and accountability, support development plans including synergistic networking and services to community and economy for achieving higher standards and to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the technical education management system.

Schools - The University has two Schools NITK English medium school and NITK Kannada medium school.

Remedial Coaching Classes - Remedial Coaching classes are conducted for students with less exposure to good academics and those from poor background. These classes are specially conducted for students of first year B.Tech. course. A faculty each from the respective department is identified and a specific day of the week is identified for the respective subject after class hours. This practice helps the needy students from the first year to get adapted to the demanding academic environment of the Institute. The faculty coordinates the course and is assisted by student tutors from the third and final year of B.Tech. course and other PG course. Thus, the young students of higher semesters also get exposure to teaching early on.

Spoken English Classes - Special classes in Spoken English have been arranged by the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management. For Students: Spoken English classes are held every semester for students of UG and PG courses. Classroom teaching as well as Language Laboratory are made use of for this course. These are conducted after class hours on a specified day of the week.

Scholarships - Various public and private organisations fund various Scholarships.
Some of these are:

  • Post Matric scholarship to SC/ST students of all concerned states.
  • Defence scholarship to the wards of service personnels in defence.
  • National merit scholarship for meritorious students.
  • Jindal scholarship (Jindal Medical Relief Society).

Research and Development - R&D Department has been recognized as Centre for AICTE sponsored National Doctoral Program. It is also a Centre for Quality Improvement for PG and Doctoral programs for sponsored teachers(both Engineering & Diploma). Nearly 300 PhD candidates currently registered.

Research & Development Centre for Clay Roofing Tiles, Bricks and Other Ceramic Products - Govt. of Karnataka, K.S.F.C. and K.R.E.C. / N.I.T.K. in association with various Tile Industry Associations have established this centre at K.R.E.C. / N.I.T.K., so that the additional necessary expertise can be created apart from fruitfully utilizing the expertise and infrastructural facilities available in K.R.E.C. / N.I.T.K.

C.C.E. - The Centre for Continuing Education has been conducting a series of refresher courses and extension programmes involving in-house faculty and facilities. Also, eminent resource persons from other institutions and industries participate. These programmes are catering to different areas and have received all-round appreciation. CCE is actively associated with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

Health Care Centre - It is situated at the centre of the Campus, opposite to the main playground and is convenient to all the staff, students and residents of the Campus. Nearly 6000 Population of NITK community including Institute Staff and their dependants, students, staff of Hostels and retired Employees and their spouse are given free treatment in the Health Care Centre. Two Medical Officers are available for general consultations and treatment during working hours. Besides, medical emergencies are attended during off-duty hours at the residence of Doctor.

Health Care Facilities:

  1. Pharmacy - The Pharmacy at the Health Care Centre is outsourced since 2 years. Outsourced Pharmacy makes available all the medicines prescribed by the University Medical Officers and Visiting Consultants. Dressing materials, disposable gloves and syringes, permissible medical appliances are also made available.
  2. Nursing Facility - On the advice of the doctors, injections are given by the Staff Nurse.
  3. Emergency Facilities - Emergency Day care facilities like Nebulisation, Oxygen Inhalation and Intravenous Fluid Infusion are carried out in the Heath Centre.
  4. E.C.G. - E.C.G. Facility is available for the needy patients.
  5. Clinical Laboratory - All the basic blood, urine and stool tests are carried out in the Laboratory. With the procurement of Semi-Automatic Analyser, Lipid profile, Blood Urea and Creatine Tests are also conducted.
  6. Dressing Room - Wound Dressing, suturing, suturing of wounds, incision and drainage procedures and other minor surgical procedures are carried out in the Dressing Room.
  7. Medical Facility outside Campus - Twelve Hospitals in Managlore and Udupi have been recognised by the University for the specialised treatment for the NITK community. MOU has been signed with KMC Mangalore for Direct Payment from Institute for out-patient and in-patient treatment.

Crrescendo - The Events in this Fest Include Group Dance, Eastern Musical Competition, Mad Ads, Movie Spoof, Just A Minute, Dumb Charades, Pot Pouri, Kannada and English literary events like Debate, Extempore, Crossword etc.

Phoenix - The University Hostel has a Recreation Committee which is mainly responsible for the conduct of Inter-Year Sports Competitions as well as the Annual Sports Meet of the University called the Phoenix. The Recreation Committee also has a Convener and a Joint Convener duly elected by the students.

SC / ST Cell - It is coordinates Scholarship Schemes for the benefit of the students belonging to SCs/STs, special Coaching for First Year B.Tech SC/ST students and conducting/coordinating Training Programmes for students and staff : Teaching and Non-Teaching.

Sports - The University provides various Sports Facilities to it's students.

Some of the Sports Facilities:

  • The University has a Swimming Pool of International Standard, 50 Mts. x 25 Mts. Size, with 90 Cm. depth at shallow end and 5 Mts. depth at deeper end. 3 Platforms of 1 Mt., 3 Mts. and 5 Mts height for Diving, and One Spring Board fitted at 1 Mt. height for Diving.
  • The University has 3 Badminton Courts and 4 Table Tennis Tables.
  • There are also 2 Cement floor Basketball Courts with Flood light system.
  • 2 Volleyball Courts, 2 KHo-Kho Courts, 2 Kabaddi Courts, 2 Ball Badminton Courts of standard size as required by Law.
  • 2 Cricket fields with standard 75 yards Boundary.
  • 2 Football Grounds of standard size.
  • 3 Tennis Courts with clay surface and one with Cement surface.
  • One standard size Hockey field with required Goal Boards.
  • One standard 400 Mts. Athletic Track., with all equipments for competitions, like synthetic High Jump Bed, Pole vault and hurdles.
  • Well equipped Weight Training Hall, with 2 competition Barbel sets, A 16 station Multi Gym, Mini Gym, Tread Mill Joggers, Exercise Cycles etc.
  • 10 Mts. x 10 Mts. Wrestling Mattress with Untearable Cover to conduct National level competitions.

NCC - National Cadet Corps Unit, The 2 Kar Engineer Corps also called as NCC-NITK has been functional for quiet a long period of time. It is the Army-Engineers wing of NCC. A cadet will have to be in NCC for 2 years in order to get his/her B-certificate and C-certificate. The C-certificate holds very special importance,be it in Placements or any other aspect.

Guest Houses - The Institute has Three Guest Houses within the Campus. The Guest Houses are located west side of the Administrative Building, near beach(Arabian Sea). They were named as JCBose, Vikram Sarabhai and Homi J Baba. JCBose Guest house furnished with A/c Suites with a telephone, TV and Internet connections in each room. VIPs, Institute guests and invited guests are accommodated here. The Vikram Sarabhai and Homi J baba Guest House has A/c, telephone and TV connections in each rooms.

Clubs

NPTEL - National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning provides Video Lessons.

NTMIS - National Technical Manpower Information System is a computerised manpower information system. It is an on-going scheme set-up with the objectives of generating and maintaining an up-to-date data bank for providing reliable information on technical manpower. The NTMIS marks the climax of a series of options so far exercised by the Government in planning of technical, management, pharmacy and hotel management & catering technology manpower in the country.

Achievements

In the year 2000, ISO 9002 Certification was granted to Computer Engineering and E&C Departments.

In 2004 it gained Lead Institution status for World Bank funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP).

In 2004, IBM sponsored Centre for Advanced Studies established in Department of Computer Engineering.

In 2005, International Collaborations were established with Kagoshima University, Japan; KAIST, South Korea.

Achievements in 2007

  • In 2007, it was identified under MHRD-NASSCOM as one of the Centres for Finishing School. The same year IBM Open Power Systems Laboratory was also established.
  • In 2005, MOU with Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bangalore was signed and International Collaboration was established with Technical University Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
  • It was also in 2007, that it was declared as Institute of National Importance through NIT Act of Parliament (15 August 2007).

Achievements in 2008

  • 25 Academic Programs accredited by National Board of Accreditation.
  • Recognized as a major QIP Centre for Engineering stream PG & PhD programs.

  • Ranked 11th among the top Technological Universities by India Today Magazine.
