In 1979, seven committed persons, all sharing the same concern to the cause of education and community development, under the leadership and guidance of Justice K S Hegde formed an association. Justice Hegde, conceived the idea of a trust, which would provide basic education, health care and train manpower. Thus, was born the Nitte Education Trust. It was formally baptised on August 30, 1979. Justice K S Hegde, the founder was the prime mover of the Trust. Over the last three decades of concerted efforts and dedication, the Nitte Education Trust has come to be recognised as one of the finest educational organisations in the State, attracting students from all over the country and abroad. In recognition of our excellence in education and service to the community, the MHRD conferred the status of Deemed-to-be University vide its notification No. F.9-13/2007-U.3(A), Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, (Department of Higher Education) dated 4th June, 2008. A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, the 25 year old dental college was the first constituent college of Nitte University. The college offers 3 courses, B.D.S, M.D.S and Ph.D. The postgraduate course that is, M.D.S is offered in 8 specialities. Subsequently, in 2009 the UGC vide its notification No. F.26-5 / 2008(CPP-I), University Grants Commission, dated 24th March, 2009 brought K S Hegde Medical Academy, NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy and Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences under the ambit of the Nitte University. With this, the University has 5 institutions all engaged in the areas of education and research in health sciences.

Location - The Medical Sciences Complex is situated on a 50.22 acre campus in Deralakatte, Mangalore. Mangalore is an important sea port on the West Coast of Karnataka in India. It is about 800 kms south of Mumbai and 350 kms west of Bangalore. Click here for - Google Map Location.
Transportation - It is the district head-quarters and is well-connected to the neighbouring states by an efficient network of road, rail and air transport.
By Air - International flights operate between Mangalore and Dubai thrice a week. Daily flights operate between Mangalore and Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai & Kochi.
By Train - Mangalore is connected by the Konkan railways and the Southern railways. There are daily trains from Mangalore to New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram.
By Bus - Daily buses ply from Mangalore to Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Goa, Mysore, Hassan, Madurai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and most other places.

Facilities
Teacher Guardianship - The system of teacher guardianship wherein a group of 5 students are assigned a teacher is a unique feature of our institutions.
Residential Facilities - The Institute has provided 48 staff quarters for the faculty members in the campus itself common for medical and dental faculty an done guest house for 30 persons meant for the visiting faculty members and other guests. The institution has one hostel for boys accommodating 110 candidates and 2 hostels for girls, accommodating 286 girls at undergraduate level. For interns and PG students there is one Hostel each, accommodating 110 candidates. Good quality and hygienic food at subsidised rates is also being provided in the Hostels.
Library - The Institution has provided a good library located in spacious building demarking separate facilities for Dental students. The Dental Library has 10396 books, 53 journals, 709 e-journals are online subscribed. The Library is having digital and indexing facilities. In addition there are departmental Library for each department. There are 3 reading rooms for faculty and students (boys and girls) separately in the Library.
Research - The Institute of Dental Sciences is recognised Research Centre of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences for Ph.D degree programmes. Post Graduate students submit dissertations and participate in seminars/workshops. The faculty has published 53 research papers in national and 17 in international journals and has alos authored three books.
Sports - Indoor games and other recreational facilities including the Gymnasium are also available in the Hostel campus.
Counselling - Professional campus counsellors interact with students having personal, disciplinary or emotional problems.
Medicare Scheme - All the students of the institution are covered by the Medicare scheme, which entitles them to free medical and dental care and treatment at the Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital.
Seminar Rooms - Every PG department has separate seminar rooms with LCD and audio-visual facilities along with departmental library.
Laboratories - The Laboratories for UG and Research Laboratories for PG are well equipped and spacious.
Seminar and Lecturer Hall - One Seminar Halls with capacity of 250 persons and 4 Lecturer Halls having a capacity of 110 persons fitted with audio-video aids are available.
Auditorium - One Auditorium having capacity of 650 persons is being shared by Medical and Dental Colleges.
Museums - The Institution is having 4 museums i.e Dental Material, Histology, Anatomy and Oral Pathology.
Other Facilities - 24 hr telephone and Internet facilities, co-operative stores, a post office and a bank. etc.
