Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) evolved from the Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Education of the Mysore University. It is the 8th Open University of India. It was established on 1st June 1996 vide Karnataka Govt. Notification No. ED 1 UOV 95 dated 12th February 1996 - KSOU Act 1992. With the virtue of KSOU Act of 1992, Karnataka State Open University is empowered to establish, maintain or recognize Colleges, Regional Centres and Study Centres at such places in Karnataka and may also open outside Karnataka at such places as it deems fit. Karnataka State Open University is a recognised University of Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi, regular member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Delhi. The University houses at present the Administrative Office, Academic Block, Lecture Halls, a well-equipped Library, Guest House Cottages, a Moderate Canteen, Girls Hostel and a few cottages providing limited accommodation to students coming to Mysore for attending the Contact Programmes or Term-end examinations.

Facilities
Study Centres - To achieve the objectives of Distance Education, the University at present has established the Regional Centres / Study Centres in various parts of Karnataka State. The Study Centres are established to provide face to face interaction between the students and KSOU on all aspects of the academic Programme. These Centres provide weekend counselling, library facilities and other information. These will be available to the students during their visits to the study centres. All the important communications are sent to the co-ordinators of the centres and the co-ordinator will display a copy of such circular/notification on the notice board of the study Centre for the benefit of all the students. One is therefore advised to keep in touch with your nearest study Centre. Information with regard to submission of assignments, examination forms, issue of admission tickets, examination time-table, declaration of results etc., can be obtained from respective Co-ordinators of the study centres. For B.A./B.Com. students, weekend Counselling will be arranged at these Study Centres. For M.A./M.Com.(Previous and Final) Contact Programme will be held at Bangalore, Davangere, Dharwad, Gulbarga, Mysore, Shimoga and Udupi/Mangalore Centres. The details of the Programme and the Institution where it will be held will be intimated to the students individually. The students can also contact the Regional centres for such information and also to obtain application forms for admission and for examination etc. For Diploma courses contact programme will be arranged at Mysore only.
Hostel Accommodation for Ladies - KSOU has beautiful and well furnished Ladies Hostel in the Campus with accommodation for 56 students at a time. Each room can accommodate two students at a nominal rent of Rs.50/- per head. In addition to this, each student has to pay Rs. 250/- as Refundable Caution Deposit. The University will fine if students were found staying in the Hostel without valid receipt for having paid the rent. The room rent has to be remitted in the counter meant for this purpose. Students have to follow discipline in the premises of the University. Damage to University property in the hostel by students will be viewed seriously. If found, the erring student will be penalised. For advance reservation of accommodation students can contact Information Cell over telephone (Tel. No 0821-2519943). It is not possible to provide accommodation if student arrive at odd hours without prior intimation.
Cottage Facility for Men - There are seven cottages with three rooms. Nine students can stay in each cottage. A rent of Rs. 50/- per student per day has been fixed.
Faculty - The University has a core faculty of 50 teachers working in 18 departments. They have long experience in the field of distance education and are available for consultation and advice during office hours. All of them are well qualified Professors always busy in Academic pursuits. Their contribution is outstanding in the field of Distance Education. Besides University engages the services of well experienced teachers working in various Universities in the State. This enhances the quality of the programmes provided by the KSOU.
Library - The KSOU Library is open to all bonafide students of the University. The library works from 10.00 am to 5.30 pm on all working days without lunch break. During Contact Programmes the Library is kept open from 8 am to 8 pm in all the days including general holiday. It has a collection of over 90,000 books.
