Indian Institute of Management, Indore was established in 1996. It is the sixth in the prestigious IIM family of management schools. The institute was chosen to be set up in Indore to give an impetus to management education in central India and has ever since been acting as the pioneer in the field of management, interfacing with the industry, government sectors and PSUs. In addition to its flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP) and general management courses for executives, the institute started offering a 6 month business management course for Defence officers (CCBMDO) in June 2006. It has a 193 acre campus which is located atop a small hill on the outskirts of Indore. The geographical proximity to the fastest growing industrial belt in India and the presence of Special Economic Zones around Indore provide the right environment for both giving hands-on experience to the students and in enabling the industry to make use of the wealth of management expertise available in the institute. IIM Indore has a solid infrastructure ranging from a very beautiful campus and hostels to a strong IT backbone and the latest in teaching aids. The old temporary campus was located in Rajendranagar in Indore till 2002, when the institute moved to its current state of the art campus situated at Rau on the Rau-Pithampur road close to the Pithampur Special Economic Zone. The foundation stone of the new campus was laid by Mukesh Ambani. The sprawling 193 acre campus is amongst the biggest for management institutes in the country.
Location - The Institute's campus is located at Prabandh Shikhar, on Rau-Pithampur Road, off Agra-Bombay Highway, i.e. A.B. Road, Indore. The campus is about 19 km away from Indore railway station, 18 km from the main bus-stand, and 19 km from Indore airport.
Transportation - Indore is well connected by road, rail and air with the Agra-Mumbai highway passing through the city.
By Road
It is strategically located, being in close proximity to Ujjain (50 kms), Bhopal (190 kms) both of which are connected by daily flights operated by Jet Airways and Indian Airlines. Other major areas which are in close proximity are Ahmedabad (445 kms), Gwalior (490 kms), Bombay (600 kms), Delhi (810 kms).
By Air
Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines provide airline services from Indore. Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, Bangalore and Hyderabad are connected by daily flights from Indore. IIM Indore campus at Rau is located around 19 kms away from the Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar airport. Private taxi and auto-rickshaw services are available outside the airport.
By Train
There are daily express trains connecting Indore with Delhi (Nizamuddin Express), Jammu Tawi (Malwa Express) and Mumbai (Avantika Express). There are weekly trains to Cochin (Ahilya Nagari Express), Kolkata (Kshipra Express), Jaipur (Jaipur –Indore Express) and Ahmedabad (Gandhinagar – Indore Express). The Intercity Express runs between Indore and Bhopal. Shuttle service is available for Ujjain and Mhow.
Facilities
Class Rooms - The classrooms have the capacity to seat up to 120 students. In contrast to the PGP (Post Graduate Programme) classrooms, which offer a linear seating arrangement, the MDP classrooms provide more flexibility with round tables that can be arranged in an ad-hoc fashion to facilitate more interaction among the participants. All classrooms are air-conditioned and equipped with all modern teaching aids. These include electronic media such as multimedia notebooks, LCD & O/H projectors, motorized screens, infra-red pointers, cordless microphones and speakers etc. Audio-visual aids such as television and video players are also regularly used. There are also separate Seminar rooms, Audio-Visual rooms and seminar halls equipped with state-of-the-art video-conferencing facilities.
IIMI Library - It is a hybrid library with the state-of-the-art technological applications. The entire Library collection including the CD-ROM databases and the online databases are made available through Institute’s network. Users can access the online databases and also find out the real-time availability of library materials from their own computer terminals. The Library offers a range of information services to support the learning process set to the highest professional standards. IIMI Library is an active member of IIM Consortia & INDEST Consortia.
IT Facilities - IIM Indore has a fast, reliable and rugged computer network of more than 1300 Nodes. This network has a Gigabit fiber backbone connectivity to all the blocks and departments. The network has a redundant design which includes two no. of core switches to cater to network connectivity for the entire campus. All the hostels, faculty blocks, the admin block, classroom blocks, the MDP block, the library & the seminar block are connected through redundant gigabit fiber backbone and apart from the above, all the blocks are connected through layer 2 & 3 switches to provide 100 mbps connectivity at the user end. Every hostel room has a dedicated LAN connection on the institute's network to provide round the clock access to resources on the net. Wireless network is also enabled in the faculty block, Library, class rooms, MDC & hostel blocks. It also has Internet Access: 34 Mbps (1:1) leased line connection from BSNL, Video Conferencing : VC System available with 4 ISDN line & also connected with Internet.
Hostels - Single-seated accommodation facilities are available for all PGP (Post Graduate Programme) participants in the campus premises, with separate blocks for men and women. MDP participants have a separate MDP hostel block while a housing block is available for FPM participants. Aesthetically designed, the hostel blocks are spread around the canteen, on the sides of the hillock. The hostels are interconnected, mostly in blocks of three. Each of the blocks has a square in the centre where basketball and/or badminton courts with artificial turf are maintained, with some blocks also having lawns in the square. Each hostel block has a common room where facilities such as wall-mounted televisions, printers, table-tennis tables and carrom and chess games are available. It is the common room that provides the scene of action for get-togethers, parties and informal discussions. Each block is also equipped with fully automatic washing machines and each floor is further equipped with landline phones, water coolers and water purifiers. Students also make use of the open terraces on each block for various purposes, ranging from drying clothes to hosting parties. The individual rooms are furnished with teak cots and bedding, a computer table, chairs, closets and shelves. All rooms have full time internet connectivity with direct lines to the main LAN. The housekeeping staff are available through the week except Sundays and take care of cleaning the rooms, corridors and rest rooms on a daily basis. Dedicated mess facilities and round the clock canteen facilities are available in the hostels. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food are available.
Sports Activities - The scenic, slightly winding road down the hill to the institute gates, is used extensively for both jogging and walking by the students and faculty alike. One can in fact find students jogging down the well-lit roads even at 3am. Wide, open lawns and cleared spaces also provide excellent opportunities for impromptu games of badminton or football. Like the rest of India though, it is cricket that rules. Each of the hostel blocks has a square in the centre that has either a basketball court or a badminton courts or both. The well maintained turf are relaid frequently in consultation with experts, to provide the best and safest facilities for students to play on. The squares in the larger blocks can frequently be found entertaining games of cricket. Three of the hostel blocks have floodlights so that games of cricket, basketball or badminton can be found going on into the wee hours of the morning. The state of the art Gymnasium is equipped with most modern work out machines like exercise bike, rowing machine, stepper and multigym. Also, dumbbells and discs are available in all sizes to provide participants extensive free weight training. A complete boxing kit consisting of punching bags and gloves adds another feather to the cap. The institute also employs the services of part-time yoga trainer and weight instructor.
Placement - The placement cell at IIMI is involved right from the beginning of the year be it the preparation of the placement brochure to the summer placements and the final recruitments their efforts are always directed towards providing the best interface as representatives of an institute of high repute. Previous employers include Trident, TVS Electronics, UAE Exchange, Unilever etc.
ISEP - The International Student Exchange Program has been instituted. IIM Indore has established strong relationships with several Universities and Business Schools over the world and the list continues to grow. Participating in the exchange program requires a student of IIM Indore to undertake full-time study for one or two semesters at any of its international partner institutes.
Social and Cultural Affairs Committee (Sanskriti) - Sanskriti organises a number of events throughout the year. As the new batch arrives in June, Sanskriti organises an Informal Freshers' Night. Sanskriti also arranges institute picnics twice a year. Movie club ensures that people with diverse choices and language preferences get their due. In association with SPIC MACAY, Sanskriti regularly invites renowned artistes to the campus.
