Rani Durgavati University, to be more precise Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur is a major university of India offering a wide array of academic courses. Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalya is its local name and it is often abbreviated as RDVV or RDV. Dr. Kunji Lal Dubey, who subsequently became the Speaker, Vidhan Sabha of M.P., was the founder Vice-Chancellor of the University. Dr. Kunji Lal, a visionary and a philosopher envisioned the university at Jabalpur in 1956. It was on 9th February, 1959 that his vision materialised with establishment of Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalya. It is named after Rani Durgavati who was valiant, beautiful and a great leader. She fought the Mughals and even defeated them on occasions. But on 24th June, 1564 she attained martyrdom whilst in battle with the Mughals. Her spirit of courage, self-respect and sacrifice inspired the naming of University of Jabalpur to Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya in 1983 by the Government of Madhya Pradesh. Government of India also paid its tribute to the valiant Rani by issuing a postal-stamp commemorating her martyrdom, on 24th June 1988. Her martyrdom day (24th June 1564) is even today commemorated as “Balidan Diwas (day of sacrifice).”
Jabalpur complemented the establishment of the university as philosophers, litterateurs and scholars like Jaabaali Rishi, Maharshi Mahesh Yogi, Shri Panna Lal Shrivastava ‘Noor’, Acharya Rajneesh ‘Osho’ amongst others had their abodes here. Famous personalities have been a part of the university on major occasions like Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, who delivered its first Convocation address on 1.3.1958. Dr. C.D. Deshmukh on 16.11.1960, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on 10.12.1961, Dr. C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar on 15.2.1963, Prof. R. Chidambaram (atomic scientist) on 28.2.2002 and Dr. J.S. Verma (former Chief Justice of India) on 7th March, 2005, delivered the Convocation address. As of 2013 the University comprises of 151 colleges excluding teaching departments. The Dean, College Development Council coordinates and monitors the academic activities of the affiliated and autonomous colleges. There are 13 fully functional faculties in the University.

By Bus: The National Highway (NH-7) passes through the city. It is well connected to other cities of the state as well as other states by road.

University Hostels - The University has two big hostels, one for boys called Devendra Boys’ Hostel and the other for girls called Kasturba Women's Hostel, situated inside the University campus and within walking distance from the teaching departments. The boys’ hostel has 101 furnished rooms split into two wings. There are facilities like a fully functional reading room, dining hall with television. There is a fully functional kitchen run on a co-operative basis. The girls & hostel is situated on the campus adjacent to the Hostel Warden/Superintendent bungalow. There are 88 furnished airy rooms split into three wings. The hostel has a lush lawn with trees. There is an entertainment/dining hall with a television.
Library - The Central Library of the University is known as Pt. Dwarika Prasad Mishra Central Library. It has a collection of about 1, 80,000 books, over 8,000 bound volumes of research abstracts and journals, and hard copies of over 4,000 research degree thesis awarded by the University. The University library system is computerized and has a database of about 30,000 books, 10,000 journals and 4,000 theses, all hooked up with the INFLIBNET. LAN connects all sections of the library. The Library also maintains Internet access. Besides the Central Library, each teaching department has a separate library, equipped with textbooks, supplementary reading materials, including journals and encyclopaedia on the concerned subject with photocopying facility. There are specific libraries as well as reading rooms for students in the departments.
UICSA – It stands for University Institute of Computer Science and Applications is an autonomous institute within the jurisdiction of R.D. University. It was established in 1993 when the Executive Council of the University passed a resolution to establish it and it was accepted by University Grants Commission, New Delhi. UGC also sanctioned the initial establishment cost. Later in the year 1997, a M.C.A. programme was also approved by All India Council of Technical Education. The pattern of study here includes lectures, practical’s, projects, case studies and workshops, which help the students to grasp the theoretical as well as practical aspects of the application of computer education in the business/industrial world.
Department of Tribal Studies - The department works in close cooperation with Departments of Economics, Political Science, Ancient History, Law and Philosophy. The Department prepares students for M.A. (Tribal Studies) and Ph.D. degrees of the University and is one and the only of its kind in India.
Gandhian Study Centre - The Centre plans to prepare modules of short-term courses (of approximately one week's duration) in Gandhism for the orientation of all University staff and students. The Centre proposes to conduct part-time Diploma courses of about 6 months each for students/teachers of the University, NGOs, corporate executives and Government officials, so that Gandhian ideas can be profitably put into practice into everyday life and situations. These courses will be based on the Diploma Course in Gandhian Thought conducted by the Institute of Gandhian Studies Wardha Maharashtra.
Centre for Ambedkar Studies – It plans to conduct bridge courses in English and Yoga for students from the depressed classes of society. It will provide special coaching facilities for disadvantaged students preparing for admission to professional courses and the Civil Services during the summer vacations.
Remedial Coaching - Remedial Coaching classes are provided for SC/ST students at the Department of Political Science. The students are provided these classes to train them to compete at the UGC NET examination, as well as prepare them for National and State level civil services examinations. These students require special attention for enhancing their intake and retention capabilities and for their overall academic upliftment.
CC- Short for Computer Centre it provides internet facility to students, researchers and faculty. The Centre has implemented Campus Networking by which all teaching and administration departments are connected. On this intranet internet is available via VSAT provided by UGC. It has an institutional membership of Computer Society of India. A number of E-Journals of various disciplines being provided by the UGC are available on the net. It is the pivotal point for various teaching departments as it facilitates teaching and practical learning. Even Academic Staff College (which runs orientation and refresher programmes), Indira Gandhi National Open University and University Distance Education cell rely on the centre. The Computer Centre also runs short-term job-oriented computer courses. Awareness programmes for employees and research scholars are regularly run by it. A six months' "add-on" course titled "Certificate course in IT Management" is also being run successfully. The Centre is also nodal centre for EduSat under which students participate in Interactive Program of Vigyan Prasar Delhi via Teleconference.
University Skill Development Centre – The R.D. University has been identified under the National Services and Skill Development Scheme (NSSDS) to run various skill development courses in coordination with Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS), Mumbai on the initiative of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India, New Delhi as pilot project study for 2013-2016. In this pilot phase three centres located at Dindori, Lakhnadoun and Mandla had been selected to impart the vocational training mainly targeting the students from SC, ST and OBC population. The training programme commenced from June, 2013 to train 3000 students in the initial phase. The NSSDS is specially focusing on the courses viz. (a) Computer Literacy, (b) English Communication, (c) Soft skills, (d) Financial Literacy, (e) Skill in working with community. There are 20 credits for certificate courses and 40 credits for Diploma level courses. After successfully completion of the courses, the student will get certificate/diploma jointly from the R.D. University, Jabalpur and TISS, Mumbai.
Women Study, Development and Research Centre – It is located in the University and was established to enhance knowledge assimilation and transmission through teaching, research, field action and documentation. It does this through offering certificate courses, research projects, extension activities and advocacy programmes. The University Grants Commission supports the centre and facilitates networking amongst constituents involved in similar work.
Placement Cell – RDU has a fully functional Placement Cell which trains students according to the requirements of market and industry and ensures proper and judicious placement of students passing out from the various University Teaching Departments. The Placement Cell also takes care of generation and disbursement of information relating to employment opportunities and scope for higher studies both within the country and abroad.
University Health Centre – It is located within the campus and functions under the superintendence of a fully qualified full time doctor. The Centre has an indoor patients ward with five beds. There is also a mini operation theatre having an X-ray machine. A homeopathic doctor also visits the centre twice a week. Regular disbursement of medicines to is also done for all University employees and students.
Students Welfare - The Dean Students’ Welfare is in charge of all extracurricular activities of students. The Office of the Dean helps students regarding housing, employment guidance, welfare activities, scholarship, cultural activities and general assistance in administrative matters. It has been regularly organizing Youth Festivals and other related cultural activities like concerts by SPICMACAY promoting Indian Art Forms. The welfare of foreign students also comes under its purview. There is a large contingent of foreign students especially from African countries who take admission in the University and its various affiliated colleges. Their special needs are taken care of by the Dean Students’ Welfare.
