About Vikram University

Vikram University is a State Government University having a rich history and tradition. It was established at Ujjain on the 1st of March, 1957. The foundation stone of Vikram University was laid by the then Home Minister of India Shri Govind Vallabh Pant on Tuesday, on the 23rd of October, 1956. The function was presided over by the Rajpramukh of the Madhyabharat State Late Jiwajirao Scindia. Ujjain, earlier known as Ujjayini was the capital of ancient Avanti Pradesh and one of the oldest and most renowned seats of learning Ujjain has a rich academic and cultural heritage. Vikram University was among the fourteen ancient universities of India, this 3000 year old university was the most widely recognized seat of all art forms, sports, science, literature, science and astronomy. Ujjain is known for its antiquity and its rich cultural and religious traditions. It has also been an ancient seat of learning. Therefore, after independence a galaxy of personalities urged upon the Central Government to establish a university at Ujjain. It was their proposal to name the university after the famous ruler Vikramaditya, a great scholar and known for his infallible judgement.  When the state of Madhyabharat came into existence, Ujjain was selected for the proposed Vikram University. Vikram University, Ujjain has about 171 affiliated college spread across Ujjain, Dewas, Shajapur, Ratlam, Agar, Mandsaur and Neemuch districts of Western Madhya Pradesh. The convocations held by the University in past years were addressed by great luminaries like Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, Sir C. P. Ramaswami Ayyar, Dr. Kalulal Shrimali, Pt. Dwarkaprasad Mishra, Pt. Kunjilal Dube, Babu Jagjiwanram, Dr. Govind Narayan Singh, Smt. Mahadevi Verma, Smt. Indira Gandhi, Dr. Satish Chandra amongst others.

1.  The Lions and the Rising Sun - Together, these form the crest of the great Vikramaditya and represent indomitable courage and the rising light of wisdom.

2.  The Book – It is poised lightly on the petals of the lotus signifies the numerous branches of learning.

3.  The Silhouette of the temple of Mahakaleshwara – It symbolizes the sacred culture of the ancient city of Ujjain, the seat of the University.

Facilities at Vikram University

Hostels – There are four hostels for Boys with about 348 rooms on single and sharing basis, these are named Kalidas Hostel, Bhartihari Hostel, Sandipani Hostel and J. N. I. B. M. Hostel. The girl’s hostel has two separate buildings hostel with 100 rooms on single and sharing basis, it is named Vidyottama Hostel. There are two other hostel for the Post Metric students of SC/ST in the University Campus under the control of Department of Tribal Welfare, Government of Madhya Pradesh. All the hostels have their own separate mess facilities and playground.

Maharaja Jiwaji Rao Library – It is the name of the Central Library and was founded by the first Prime Minister Pandit. Jawahar lal Nehru on 11^th November, 1959. It was renamed as Maharaja Jiwaji Rao Library after it moved into its new premises. It is spread across 4193sq. mtrs. over four floors with a seating capacity for approximately 400 persons. It has more than 1,82,000 books (52000 titles). It has more than 25,000 on line journals available to faculty and students. It also has a special collection on Kalidas, Tulsi, Gandhi literature on competitive exams, drawing and paintings and rare books. Library has also procured 1645 Ph.D. thesis and 6049 P.G. Dissertations. The university library also provides services to affiliated colleges as well. It also provides other services such as circulation, inter library loan, reprographic, Inflibnet and micro film reading facilities. The Central Library-E-Resource Centre has comprehensive information resources that are useful for academic and research purpose. It has a large collection of books, journals, DVDs, etc. Scindia Oriental Research Institute, a unit of the Vikram University is an internationally renowned centre has a collection of more than 20,000 manuscripts including Bhurja Patra and Palm-Leaf manuscripts.

University Computer Centres - The Computer Centre provides Data Processing Services to assist almost all administrative sections and teaching departments of the University. The Centre is open for all Research Scholar to provide miscellaneous IT services which assist in their research works. The Computer Centre also provides training on computer awareness to university employees.

Bank – There is a branch of the united commercial bank (UCO Bank) situated near madhav bhawan. It assists the university in all its financial transactions such as deposition of examination fees, admission fees etc.

Postal Services – The university has a post office is located near School of studies in continuing education which helps in the university postal correspondence.

Sports and Games – The University provides various facilities for sports and games like - athletics, boxing, badminton, basketball, chess, cross country races, cricket, football, gymnastics, malkhambh etc. It also has a gymnasium hall and playgrounds.

Health Centre – The health centre situated in the university campus provides general health facility to the employees and the students.

Guest House – The University guest house provides accommodations to external examiners and visiting faculty. It is situated opposite to vikram vatika.
