The Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) was established in January, 2009, by the Government of Karnataka under the Karnataka State Law University Act, 2009 with its headquarters at Navanagar Hubli. KSLU is the single largest federal university in the country having 87, colleges under its umbrella. Since the university is newly established, it is under development. The university campus is coming up at Navanagar, Hubli, on a sprawling 55 acres of land. A building belonging to the PWD, which already forms part of the campus, is being used, at present, as a facility for 'startup' activities for the current academic year. The buildings, to be constructed include, the Administrative Block, Law School, Institute for Legal Training, Consultancy and Services (ILTCS), Library, Auditorium, Boys Hostel, Girls Hostel, Guest House, Quarters, Common Catering Facility, Club, Indoor Stadium, Outdoor Stadium, Support Structure etc. KSLU offers the 3 years LL.B. course, 5 years B.A., LL.B., B.B.A., LL.B. and B.B.A., LL.B., (Hon’s) Double Degree integrated courses and LL.M. in Constitutional Law, Intellectual Property Rights, Business and Trade Law, Criminal Law and International Law. The P.G. Diploma in Human Rights, Cyber and IT Laws and Intellectual Property Rights also been launched. The Certificate Courses will be launched by the University shortly. All these courses can be offered by any of the affiliated law college having required facilities. In addition, the Ph.D. & LL.D. courses are also offered on the main campus. The staff and students of KSLU, including the affiliated law colleges, don Khadi attire every Monday, creating a sense of belonging, integration and nationality. On the main campus, the staff and students wear Khadi dresses in a combination of blue and white, the blue colour signifying tolerance and white, purity. This has been specially done to inculcate patriotism among law students. The striking feature of the University is that all the above mentioned amenities, including Air-conditioned classrooms, are provided to the students at the government fee of Rs.12, 190/- only, with the objective of providing quality legal education even to the poorest of the poor.
Transportation - The City of Hubli is well connected by rail, road and air to all parts of Karnataka in particular and the country as a whole in general.
Faculty
The University has only a single Faculty, i.e of Law.
Facilities
KSLU's Law School - The Karnataka state law university has established KSLU’s Law School on the main campus with state-of-the art world class infrastructure and facilities. KSLU's Law School was established on the main campus in August, 2009, offering the 5 year B.A., LL.B. and B.B.A., LL.B. Double Degree integrated courses and LL.M. in Constitutional Law and Intellectual Property Rights. KSLU's law school motto is ‘Indian Roots and Global Heights’. The Law School has adopted Unique Partnership-teaching along with the Digital Class Room teaching for which Digital Boards and LCD projectors are used. The plans also include provision of independent plug-in points for laptops in the classrooms which will facilitate online teaching in future.
Library - The KSLU Library has procured 11,500 books Journals and Reports. It subscribes to leading dailies and general magazines of India. It has an e-library which includes 2.5, lakh e-books and Legal Databases.
KSLU’s Moot Court Training – KSLU’s Moot Court Training makes the students responsible lawyers through rigorous training schedule which teaches court mannerisms, etiquettes and research methodology. The training also involves video clippings of live moot court proceedings. KSLU’s Law School’s Moot Court Society has also been established to facilitate various moot court activities.
Sports Facilities – The university provides various sports facilities which include athletics, volley ball, badminton, table tennis, chess, kabaddi, weight lifting, body building, cricket etc.
MoU’s – KSLU has entered with the Memorandums of Understanding with- National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, Karnataka Institute for Law and Parliamentary Reforms (KILPAR), Bangalore, and LexisNexis, Gurgaon.
NSS - National Service Scheme links the college to the community by deploying the student youth resources on selected community development activities which creates awareness and knowledge amongst the rural masses.
Achievements
The university provided a unique example of giving second chance to an anti-social element. Laxman Gole, who had served sentences for assault, attempt to murder and extortion was offered an honorary assistant teacher’s job by the Karnataka State Law University owing to his excellence in Gandhian Studies.
