About All India Institute of Medical Sciences - AIIMS Bhopal

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal or AIIMS Bhopal is one of the seven AIIMS apex healthcare institutes being established by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY). The PMSSY has established five more of such institutes aimed at correcting regional imbalances in quality tertiary level healthcare in the country. These have also been established for bringing self sufficiency in graduate and postgraduate medical education and training in underserved areas of the country. The other AIIMs being the AIIMS Patna, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Raipur, AIIMS Rishikesh and AIIMS Bhubaneswar

The institute has been established by an Act of Parliament on the lines of the original All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. Unlike the Postgraduate Institutes which lack the basic departments like anatomy, physiology, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology etc., the new AIIMS will have these departments as well as the super specialty departments like neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, urology, endocrinology etc. In addition departments of accident and emergency, biostatistics, medical engineering, hospital administration, genetics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, telemedicine, clinical epidemiology and medical education cell etc. are also planned.

It has started imparting undergraduate medical and nursing education and is working towards postgraduate medical education in all its branches and related fields, along with paramedical training. AIIMS Bhopal has excellent facilities for teaching including adequate laboratory facilities and equipments, talented faculty drawn from various parts of India and abroad along with telemedicine centre and IT support.

The AIIMS Bhopal logo signifies the light of erudition spreading all over, emanating from abode of stupa of Sanchi.

It consists of:

• Two serpents – They signify the two shades of human existence which physicians encounter – 1) Life and Death  2) Health and Disease
• The saying “Sharirmadhyam khalu dharmasadhanam” - It has been quoted from a dramatic poem called Kumarasambhavam by Mahakavi Kalidasa. It means “a healthy body is the means of fulfilments of dharma that is duty”
• The olive branch - It symbolizes peaceful living
• Sanchi - In Sanskrit, it literally means – ‘to measure’ and represents complete harmony between mind, body and soul

Location - The All India institute of Medical Sciences Campus is on land area of 143 acres, in the Habibganj area next to Saket Nagar on the south eastern side of the upper lake and old Bhopal city, located on N H 12 - Hoshangabad Road

Transportation

Bhopal is well connected by air, rail and road. The distance between AIIMS Bhopal and Airport is 25kms, from Bhopal railway station is 9 kms, and from Habibganj railway station is 3 kms.

Facilities

Hostel – Separate Hostel accommodation for girls and boys is provided on single occupancy basis. The rooms are furnished with a cot, mattress, study table, chair, side table and a built-in cup-board. Bed sheets, pillow, pillow- covers and other personal and daily utility items are advised to be bought on personal basis. Anti-mosquito measures like mosquito net and repellents are strongly advised.

Central Library – It is under construction as of 2015, which will be serving the varied needs of its readers efficiently. It is being planned to provide the online scientific as well as print issues of National and International journals of Medical Sciences, good volumes of books and sound reading place with the access to international libraries and major biomedical databases. World class library management systems like radiofrequency identification (RFID) system will be placed in the Central library of the AIIMS Bhopal.

Facilities for Research – The research is facilitated by state of art instrumentation including Real-time PCR, flow cytometry, HPLC, Biosafety cabinets, high speed centrifuges, ELISA, chemiluminiscent analysers, microscopes with varying resolutions manned by trained technical staff. Equipments for high throughput and advanced technologies including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, mass spectrometry, bioinformatics and NMR are underway. The research funding is obtained mainly by extramural grants from agencies namely DBT, MPCST, ICMR, DST and others. The institute aims to provide modest intramural financial support to investigators for initiating research.

Auditorium - It is octagonal in shape with viewer’s gallery having a seating capacity of 1000 seats. The entrance to the auditorium is to the north. An open air amphitheatre adjoins the auditorium for open- air events. The auditorium will be equipped with synchronized sound and lighting system and green rooms

Transit Hostel - AIIMS Bhopal has a 14 room functioning Guest House, informally termed as Transit Hostel. All rooms are double bedded and have internet facility. Two of the rooms are suites.
