Artist - How to become an Artist

Artist is the person who is capable of creating/presenting thoughts/expression and imaginations in the form, which a person is able to comprehend easily. It is rightly said that a picture is worth thousand words as far as understanding goes. An Artist may present his views in any of the art form, like painting, pencil drawing, portrait, cartoon, sketches etc.

A one time hobby of elite class has taken the form of a full fledged career now. With the expansion of mass media it has spread at very fast pace in the recent times. Advent of computer -a creation of Charles Babbage-spread the fear in the minds of masses that  it will destroy the pure form of art but it proved to be a misnomer as it effected the other way round as computer helped  to develop this profession at double pace.

Creativity of the human mind and help of computing techniques are producing master pieces in the field of arts. This blend of computer and the artist has pushed this profession to new heights. If one is looking for creativity, excitement, prestige, glamour and money and much more in a single profession then the Artist Profession is the right one.

It is a myth that artists are born or these are the people who have that acquired talent in them. It may be true to some extent that there are some people who have that knack of creativity in them but it is true of every field whether it is electronics, computers or any other profession. The truth is that one doesn't need so called acquired talent at all to become an artist. It is a skill that can be developed and perfected with practice
with sincere efforts. With right kind of study in this field a person can become a good artist and produce master pieces in the art form of his liking.

How to become an Artist?

Becoming an Artist is not dependent on one's qualification rather it is the instinct of an Art that is a 'Pre-requiste'. But to have full hold on the area of work and to get some kind of acknowledgement of one’s work one should have minimum amount of formal education of the field he is working in. So we can say that desirable qualification for pursuing an Artistic Career requires:

1. Educational Qualification

  1. Pass in Senior Secondary Examination (10+2) or equivalent recognized examination in any stream.
  2. Graduation in any Fine Arts is the most preferred qualification for being an Artist.

How to become an Artist?

To be an Artist one has to follow the below given steps:-

Step 1

After doing 10+2 class one has to take the Entrance Test held by various Fine Arts Colleges to get admission in four year degree course (BFA- Acronym as Bachelor of fine arts)

However in some colleges the admission is given on the basis of their marks in the qualifying exams or on the first come first bases.

Step 2


In these courses candidates are given thorough knowledge-both theoretical and practical- in different form of arts styles like - sketching, painting, cartooning, photography etc.

Artist Job Opportunities and Career Prospects

After completing the required course and imparting himself with the necessary practical training, Employment for Artists exists in the following area:

  1. Artists can join a newspaper house as a cartoonist.
  2. They can join a news agency or a magazine as designer.
  3. They can also join Govt. Sector in Indian Information Service or in the police departments to help making sketches of the proclaimed offenders.
  4. After acquiring enough of skill in various forms of art an Artist can make his own master pieces and held exhibition displaying his work.

Artist Salary

Like a piece of art one cannot count the remunerations of Artists in numbers. If they are working in some organization then one can say they can get Rs.10,000 to start with and go to any where unimaginable. It all depends upon the creative skill of the artists and the project they are handling up. t is not possible to guess the earning of those artists who are working independently . May be a lot of their hard work or best of their work earn them nothing and on other side their single creation may get them millions of dollars .
