Mathematician - How to become a Mathematician

more_vert

Mathematicians are professionals who conduct research in fundamental mathematics or in the application of mathematical techniques to science, management and other fields. They also solve problems in various fields using mathematical methods.

Mathematicians use Mathematical theory, computational techniques, algorithms, and the latest computer technology to solve economic, scientific, engineering, and business problems. The work of Mathematicians falls into two broad classes: Theoretical Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. Mathematicians also work in the field of Mathematics, studying quantities, space, structure, patterns and change.

There are many courses for becoming Mathematicians such as Mathematical Logic, Numerical Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Statistics, Probability Theory, Mathematical Analysis and more. Students have to enrol them in any of recognised institute for having an admission. In some reputed colleges/universities, there are entrance tests for offering admissions.

Mathematician profession is one of the most sought professions by students since so many years ago until now. They must have so many analytical skills and friendly with digits and numbers.

Mathematician Eligibility

The typical minimal educational requirement for a Mathematician in the private industry is a PhD degree in Mathematics, but opportunities also exist for Master's Degree and Bachelor’s Degree.

Mathematician Required Skills

  • Mathematicians possess good reasoning to identify, analyze, and apply basic principles to technical problems.
  • They should have communication skills which are also important because Mathematicians have to interact and discuss proposed solutions with people who may not have extensive knowledge of mathematics.
  • Mathematicians should have substantial knowledge of computer programming because most complex Mathematical computation and much Mathematical modelling are done on a computer.
  • They should be able to identify solutions by learning and applying new methods such as designing mathematical models that interpret data in a meaningful way.
  • Mathematicians must be up to date with new Mathematical developments and producing original mathematics research; using specialist mathematical software such as Mathematica, Matlab or Mathcad.

How to become Mathematician?

One has to follow the given steps to become a Mathematician:

Step 1
Students after passing their 12th class in science stream with Mathematics as one of the subjects. During their graduation, they take Mathematics as one of the subjects in B.Sc. (non-medical). Some of the students also take Mathematics in Arts also known as Arts with Mathematics. Admission to graduates courses is given on the basis of entrance test but it depends on the institute to institute and place to place. Some of the graduate level courses in Mathematics are given below.

Bachelor's Degree Courses:

  • B.A. (Hons.) (Mathematics)
  • B.A. (Mathematics)
  • B.Sc. (Mathematical Science)
  • B.Com. (Business Mathematics and Statistics)

Step 2
At some places, the Masters’ Degree is considered as the main requirement for obtaining a job and these places are mostly research places and lecturers in colleges/universities. Some of the Masters’ Degree courses are mentioned below to which students take after graduation.

Master's Degree Courses:

  • M.Ed. (Mathematics)
  • M.Sc. (Mathematics)

Step 3
After getting a master's degree in mathematics aspiring candidates can go for:

  • M.Phil. (Applied Mathematics)
  • M.Phil. (Mathematical Science)
  • M.Phil. (Mathematics)
  • PhD (Mathematics)

Mathematician Career Prospects

There is a strong competition for Mathematician positions. Despite this one, many candidates with a background in advanced Mathematical techniques and modelling will find positions in other closely related fields.  Those with a graduate degree in Maths, very strong quantitative and data analysis skills, and a background in a related discipline, such as business, computer science, or statistics, should have the best job prospects. There are many positions they can obtain depending on their educational qualifications.

  • Statistician
  • Financial Analyst
  • Teacher/Lecturer
  • Computer system analyst – Banking

Mathematician Salary

The salary package for Mathematician varies in the private institutions and it depends mainly on the qualification, experience and skill of the candidate. There are plenty of jobs available for the Mathematicians with good salary packages. A fresh postgraduate in Mathematics can get a starting salary of Rs.30,000 per month for a teaching post in an engineering college, which is on a par with engineering graduates.

A qualified professional in this field gets a pay package that ranges from Rs.50,000 to Rs.60,000 per month. Mathematicians’ salary keeps increasing with experience and time as at later stage of their job their salary reach up to Rs. 80,000 and more than this per month.
