Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University (SNDT Women’s University), Churchgate, is a State Government University. SNDT Women’s University is the first Women’s university in India as well as in South-East Asia. The University was founded by Maharshi Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve, a social reformer and Bharat Ratna awardee in 1916 for a noble cause of Women’s Education. Sir Vithaldas Thackersey generously contributed in the name of his mother Shreemati Nathibai. It was then known as ‘The Indian Women’s University’. In 1920, its name was changed to ‘Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University’in memory of Sir Vithaldas Thackersey’s Mother. It was accorded statutory recognition in 1951. Lady Premlila Thackersay was its First Vice Chancellor. The University headquarters are located at Churchgate in South Mumbai. It has three campuses - main campus at Santacruz–Juhu area of Mumbai. The other two campuses are - Mumbai Churchgate Campus and Pune Campus. The University has more than 250 colleges affiliated to it and has jurisdiction all over India but most of the affiliated colleges are located in Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Surat and Goa. The University’s main campus and Headquarters are in Churchgate Campus, Mumbai and the other two campuses of this University are at Juhu, Mumbai and Karve Road, Pune. SNDT Women's University has been established for the cause of Women's empowerment through access to education, particularly higher education, through relevant courses in formal and non-formal streams.

Facilities at SNDT Women’s University
Hostel – Hostel accommodation is limited in the University as such students need to find off campus hostel facilities. Students from outside Pune are given preference for admission to the hostel on merit basis.
Library - The collection of the University Library includes information material in English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and Sanskrit. It has about 3.50 lakh books.
The collection includes:
University Board of Student's Welfare – The board plays a multifunctional role with an objective to develop overall personality of the students. It organises Inter Collegiate Youth Festivals consisting of 28 events based on Indian Culture and National Integration at Regions (Mumbai, Maharashtra & Gujarat level and Finals). It also conducts various workshops on relevant subject for selected students from conducted and affiliated colleges of S.N.D.T. University. It also organise placement programmes.
University centres
a) Centre for Distance Education, Juhu – The centre provides two mode of education i) face to face and distance mode.
b) The Centre for Distance Education (CDE) was established mainly to empower women through higher education. The CDE is offering several certificate, diploma, degree, post-graduate courses in various disciplines to women who could not complete their education.
c) Research Centre for Women's Studies, Juhu - Research Centre for Women’s Studies (RCWS) works on several research projects with generous grants from national and international donor agencies, with a very broad-based research focus which has led to theoretical studies (some of which have had policy implications) and action based projects. It has also contributed to the development of Women's Studies curriculum and training manuals.
d) Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Juhu – Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP) has been established for the welfare of tribes and nomadic tribes of Maharashtra and women from excluded communities. The centre is actively involved in teaching, research, training and field action.
Canteen – The University has established a canteen for meeting the food requirements of the students.
Placement Cell - The cell establishes network with industries, companies, welfare agencies, MNCs and NGOs etc. for campus recruitment.
