About Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth

Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidypeeth was established as an independent Agriculture University on 18th May, 1972 by the Government of Maharashtra Govt. It was developed for the agricultural development of Konkan region in the Western Ghats. It was named Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth  with its head quarters at Dapoli, District Ratnagiri, Maharashtra State, India. On 12th February, 2001, Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth was renamed as Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidypeeth. Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidypeeth is having jurisdiction of five district of Maharashtra viz. Brihan-Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri & Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra state. The major objective of the university is agricultural education, research & extension education in an integrated way to attain the sustainable agricultural development of Konkan region.

Facilities

University Library - The University Library has 40,978 books, 7885 periodicals. The university regularly receives 92 Indian & 32 international periodicals. College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri is having the library equipped with 6,937 books and 528 periodicals. The building has a capacity of stacking three lakh volumes and can accommodate 250 readers. Together with regular library facilities, extra facilities like Xerox service, inter library loans, LAN services, Open Access facility and Research Cubicles are the salient features of the Library.

2.  Crop Development - Various types of Crops have been developed and released by University. Some of these are - Palghar-2 (IR-5 x Zinnia-63) rice variety, Dapoli-1 (Mutant 50-1) finger millet variety, konkan gorkand (KKV Da Konsai, a selection from Konsai Local) greater yam variety etc.

- Various NATP Schemes, NARP Schemes and Ad-Hoc Schemes benefiting Research have been implemented.

Students Welfare - In order to promote all-round development of students, the university has established student Counselling, Sport Education, the Scheme of Learning While Earning.

Extension Education - Extension Education Programs for the transfer of technology towards ‘Konkan’ farmers are facilitated by the University. These programs comprises of farmer training, farmer meets, agricultural exhibitions, training programs for extension workers etc. Additionally farm tours, method & result demonstrations, group discussions, film shows, agricultural campaigns etc are the facets of the extension education. Mango and Cashew nut farmers are provided training for protection of mango and cashew nut plants at flowering stage. The fishermen are given training for fish farming.

Boys Hostel - Boys Hostel is available in the University Campus.

Laboratories - All the departments have their own Laboratories.

Placement Cell - The Placement Cell takes care of post education needs of the students.
    
Achievements

  • Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidypeeth bagged the Best Institute Award given by Indian Council of Agriculture Research, New Delhi in 1997.
  • It received the Central Government of India’s “Indira Priyadarshini Vruksha Mitra" award & "Vanashri” award of State Government of Maharashtra in the year 1994.
  • Two international awards have been received by the Rice Research Centre, Karjat for the best research on rice and relevant technology.
  • At Agricultural exhibition held at Pune, mango varieties Alphonso, Ratna, Totapuri Redsmall developed by Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidypeeth were selected for prizes.
