About Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences

Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences University was established under Section (3) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act 1956 on 29th September, 2003 by Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development vide its notification No. F.9-11/2000-U-3. The Pravara Medical Trust is the parent Organisation of the University and was established in 1972 in a small village Loni of Ahmednagar District (Maharashtra State) by a visionary Padmashri Dr. Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil, the founder of Co-operative movement in India. In 1976 the Trust started providing primary and secondary level medical care with establishment of a modest hospital of 100 beds and over a period of time the hospital grew in to 800 beds multi-disciplinary, super speciality medical institute with state of art facilities. The University is unique in more than one way. It is specialised in Medical and Health Sciences with a dedication to serve the society as a Centre of Excellence with emphasis on socially meaningful medical education, health care and research. The Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences - Deemed University at present offers various under graduate , post graduate and Diploma level programs. This University has the same status as that of other statutory Universities in India. The degrees, diplomas and certificates awarded by the University have approval of the Government of India, Govt. of Maharashtra and other states as well as the University Grants commission (UGC), Medical Council of India (MCI) Dental Council of India (DCI), All India Physiotherapists Association (AIPA) Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and Nursing Council of India (INC). The infrastructure developed at the University Campus provides an opportunity to the meritorious students to become, appropriate and need based health providers in their own environment.

Facilities

Hostel - The university provides comfortable hostel accommodation. Adequate number of international standard hostels for undergraduate and post graduate students of all disciplines (separate for boys and girls) with multi-gym, indoor sports and advanced communication facilities are provided in the campus. All hostels are provided with uninterrupted power supply through in-house power generators. Hostel rules and regulation booklet is given to the student at the time of admission.

Silver Jubilee International Centre - An elegant well-designed International Hostel with 108 furnished rooms is available in the campus for foreign and non-resident Indian (NRI) students. Each room is well furnished and provided with a pantry, Intercom & ISDN telephone facility, Internet facility, T.V. (optional).

Guest House - Visiting parents and guests are accommodated in the guest house, including at the international centre.

Central Library - Aesthetically designed with all ultra modern facilities and measuring an area of 29723 sq.ft. has been exclusively provided for the library. All the computers of Library connected to LAN. Circulation of Book is fully computerized bar code system.842 CD & DVDs are available in PIMS Library. It contains database information of Health Sciences by using CD ROM. 226 Medline CD ROM available in Library for use of PG and Faculty researchers of PIMS. The Central Library provides Internet browsing facility for faculty and students through Broad Band connection. The PIMS Central Library has taken the Associate Membership of INFLIBNET, for the use of UGC INFONET- Digital Library Consortium. OPAC search facility is available in the Library.

Language Lab - Laboratory facilities are available in PIMS Central Library for teaching learning process. Language Lab. consists of one computer set, 31 head sets, Lingua phone and software of ACEN Education Technology “ACNET 5.1”. Interactive Language Lab. software & devices for interactive course in phonetics and spoken English.

Internet Facility - The students and faculty of the organisation have a direct access to the broadband internet services through a wireless network & through intercom telephone lines. The internet connectivity is available to faculty and students in the library & hostels. The connectivity is being used to search various medical references, medical databases, for visiting websites of other medical education and medical care institutions within country and abroad. The entire network is behind firewall and all the traffic is scanned at the gateway level for threats and viruses. The internet connectivity through broadband connectivity has been provided to all staff quarter and hostels. The staff from their residence & students from hostels accessing the Internet through Internal Telephone Line, hence without any recurring cost.

Canteen - The university houses a Canteen within the campus. The food and other eatables supplied in the canteen are hygienic. Hence students are advised to take their food from university canteen only.

Coffee Shop - The university houses a 24 hrs coffee shop within the campus.

Mess within Hostels - The university Hostels has Mess facility in all hostels. Food and other eatables supplied in the Mess are hygienic.

Research - Research has always been a priority area in every discipline of medical, dental and allied health sciences at Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences (Deemed University ) due to factors like high incidence of communicable diseases amongst rural masses along with emerging and re-emerging diseases, increasing incidence of non – communicable diseases and inadequate health care delivery system. The element of research is inducted to medical students when they are in their 2nd M.B.B.S in the form simple applied projects. More complex research tasks are given to them while undergoing their internship.

Medical and Health Care - The University Hospital is 800 bed multi-disciplinary, super-speciality medical institute along with the other ancillary facilities. The Medical Council of India has recognized it as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching institute. The hospital assists State and Central governments to implement their National Public Health Programmes.

Facilities :

  • The institute provides sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic facilities like Ultrasonography, Colour Doppler, CT Scan, Digital X-ray, Cardiac Monitors, etc. Spacious speciality out-patient & diagnostic departments and In-patient wards are available with residential expert medical and para-medical teams.
  • Central Clinical Laboratory (CCL) which consists of pathology (morbid anatomy, cytology, haematology), biochemistry and microbiology is well equipped and caters to the needs of patients.
  • The Blood Bank of the Hospital is equipped with state of art equipment to perform routine and special investigations including HIV test (Elisa reader), and fractionation of blood to prepare blood components. The blood component therapy has proved to be a boon for the needy patients.
  • Dialysis Unit caters to the needs of high incidence of insecticide poisoning and snake-bites leading to kidney failure, which is very common among agricultural workers.
  • Emergency and trauma care is provided round the clock by experts.
  • Advanced Neonatal Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit take care of pre-term babies, critically ill neonates, infants and children ensuring an excellent salvage rate.
  • Intensive Care Unit is well equipped with state-of-art monitoring and life support systems for the care of the critically ill.
  • A six bedded CCU equipped with latest of the ventilators, multi-para monitors, external cardiac pace maker and 24 hrs continuous Holter ECG monitoring facilities, Caters for the needs of critically ill cardiac patients.
  • Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Care is also provided.

Erasmus Mundus External Co-operation Window - It is an EU initiative designed to foster institutional co-operation in the field of higher education between the European Union and India. Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences, Loni is partner for Erasmus Mundus External Co-operation Window – 13 India (EMECW 13 India) European Scholarships.

Grievances Redressal Cell - In order to redress individual as well as collective grievances of the teachers and other employees of the constituent College / Institutes of the University, a three-tier Grievance Redressal Mechanism has been devised as follows:-

  • CLGRC - College / Institute Level Grievance Redressal Committee.
  • ULGRC - University Level Grievances Redressal Committee.
  • BOMGRC - Board of Management level Grievances Redressal Committee.

Anti-ragging Squad -  The members of the squad visit at least twice in a week all potential areas of ragging on or outside the campus. The squad conducts surprise visits/raids on hostels and other hot spots of ragging and apprehend the culprits. It records all verbal/telephonic/written complaints and take action as stipulated in the bye-laws of the university. It keep the principal informed of all events/occurrences of ragging in the college. Anti-ragging squad will be assisted by members of college teaching staff detailed by the office of the principal on day to day basis to keep vigil on untoward events.

Alumni Association - It has been formed to to foster more extended relationship between present student and staff and the others associated with the University, to participate in activities contributing to improvement of infrastructure and academic activities of the University etc.

Bio-Medical Waste Management - The Pravara Medical Complex has setup a state of art pyrolytic incinerator (PY-200) in 1998 for rapidly destroying all bio-medical waste material generated in the campus from the 700 bedded multi speciality rural hospital, Dental hospital, physiotherapy & rehabilitation centre. The double chamber incinerator can reduce 70-90 kg/hr bio-waste. The incinerator helps the management to maintain the bio-waste and hospital waste pollution in the campus at zero level.

Baby Creche - The organization has established a unique Creche in the year 2000 for the tiny babies of the working women and parents of the Campus. The Creche has all modern facilities, congenial atmosphere, and conducive environment for healthy growth with proper motherly care. The Creche also facilitates round the clock medical facility and. emergency care with periodical expert medical and health check-ups.

Achievements

  • The trust has received accolades from His Excellency Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, President of India for the pioneer work done in the field of integrated rural Development and appreciated the participative model of Integrated Rural Development followed at Loni as Role Model for the development of Rural India and has been referred by his Excellency as operative model of PURA- Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Area.
  • Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences, Loni brought EMECW – 15 - India, European Scholarships to its campus during 2009-10. It continues to be partner for second phase named as EMECW-13 India. Of the 8 Indian Universities, Pravara is the only Deemed University in India to be the partner of Erasmus Mundus “External Co-operation Window”.
