About Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University

Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University (KKSU) is a State Government University dedicated to promote and propagate Sanskrit studies everywhere. KKSU is the First Sanskrit University of Maharashtra and Central India. It is a statutory University having powers to affiliation to institutes within and without India with core jurisdiction of state of Maharashtra. Before 1997, Maharashtra did not have a. The former Prime Minister of India, P.V. Narasimha Rao, who is a great scholar of Sanskrit, was keen on setting up an independent Sanskrit University at Maharashtra, as there is a great tradition of Sanskrit learning here. With encouragement from Mr. Rao, the late Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Sudhakarraoji Naik took up the issue and appointed Dr. Shrikant Jichkar as one man committee to give a study report for establishing the Sanskrit University in Maharashtra. Dr. Jichkar prepared the study report and a non-formal University act for the establishment of Sanskrit University in Maharashtra. The government of Maharashtra took up the issue and appointed a committee comprising of Sanskrit scholars and other educationists. On the basis of the report of the committee the State Government established the University on 18th September 1997 at Ramtek and named it after the National poet of India, Kalidasa, Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University. Ramtek is a township in Nagpur district and it was selected because it is connected to the name of great poet of the world Kavikulaguru Kalidas.

Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University is unique and entirely different from all the existing Sanskrit Universities in academic nature. While other Sanskrit Universities cater for traditional learning in Sanskrit like Veda, Vedanta, Vyakarana, Nyaya, Mimamsa Dharmashastra and Sahitya etc. KKSU has innovative academic programme and syllabus with modern subjects associated with traditional Sanskrit. Every course has Sanskrit as compulsory subject, which is taught in combination with the most modern subjects like Travel Tourism, Market Management, Human Resource Management etc. To facilitate double gain for the students, the university has converted I.A.S. M.P.S.C. curriculum into Degree Course having Sanskrit as an important subject. The University provides ATKT, Grace Mark, Condonation Marks to students which helps in encouraging them to pursue their Sanskrit studies. On one hand, the courses emphasise on modernity and on the other hand they strive to preserve tradition. All the courses of K.K. Sanskrit University are consultancy-oriented. The University has special emphasis on Science and Technology in ancient India as preserved in the Sanskrit texts. The University has open door system to remove various unnecessary technicalities. At all levels the condition of knowledge of Sanskrit as pre-requisite for admission has been removed. This system encourages many curious students from different streams to turn to take Sanskrit studies who earlier could not study Sanskrit because of faculty barriers. The University has multi-campuses with its main campus located at Ramtek which is 48 km away from Nagpur city. The other campus is located at Nagpur. One campus takes care of all the academic activities while other is devoted mostly for administrative activities.

Library - The main library is located in the main campus of University at Ramtek and Departmental Library at PGTD Campus, Nagpur. It has a collection of journals, books, rare books, manuscripts and theses. The library also has Internet Facility.

Reprographic Facilities - The University office is fully computerised with Scanning, Printing, Lamination and Photo copying facility.
