J.R.N. Rajasthan Vidyapeeth is a university which has been inspired by educational institutes like Gujarat Vidyapeeth, Gurukul Kangdi, Jamia Islamia and Shantiniketan. Inspired by these and their founders, Pandit Janardan Rai Nagar (Jannu Bhai) established the 'Rajasthan Vidyapeeth' as ‘Hindi Vidyapeeth’ on 21st August 1937 to uplift the down-trodden common man in the feudal state of Mewar. The institute started as a night study centre for the elementary, secondary and advanced courses in the national language Hindi. As time passed J.R.N. Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University grew into a large complex of more than 50 institutions spread over several districts of Rajasthan.
RVD university is also a registered society under Rajasthan society registration act, 1958 (Rajasthan act no. 28, 1958) of Rajasthan under the name of Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, (Manya) Udaipur. It became a leading Non-Government Organisation during the historic event of the unification of Rajasthan. In 1948 Pandit Janardan Rai Nagar renamed it as Rajasthan Vidyapeeth. A special feature of Rajasthan Vidyapeeth administration is 'Janatantriaya Shilanyas' (Democratic Foundation), a democratic way of life and work. Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University is organized and run entirely by its workers and its basic philosophy is to provide opportunity of participation to each worker in the decision making process through various constituent bodies.
The entire administration is divided into three-spheres or streams-social, educational and general management administration. Each of these spheres has its own elected or nominated leader and body for the management of its affairs.
