International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) is a Deemed University specialising in demographics and peripheral areas of study. IIPS is the premier Institute for training and research in Population Studies for developing countries in the Asia and Pacific region also known as ESCAP region. IIPS holds a unique position among all the regional centres, in that it was the first such centre to be started, and serves a much larger population than that served by any of the other regional centres. The Institute is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
IIPS was established at Mumbai in July 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India and the United Nations. It was then known as Demographic Training and Research Centre. Till July 1970 it was known as the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC). In 1985, it was renamed as the International Institute for Population Studies (IIPS). The Institute was re-designated to its present title in 1985 to facilitate the expansion of its academic activities and was declared as a 'Deemed University' on 19th August, 1985 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The recognition facilitated the award of recognized degrees by the Institute itself and paved the way for further expansion of the Institute as an academic institution. At the time of establishment, the institute was entrusted with the responsibility of undertaking training and research in population study.
Besides teaching and research activities, the Institute also provides consultancy to the Government and Non-Government organizations and other academic institutions. Over the years, the Institute has helped in building a nucleus of professionals in the field of population and health in various countries of the ESCAP region. During the past 53 years, students from 42 different countries of Asia and the Pacific region, Africa and North America have been trained at the Institute. Many, who are trained at the Institute, now occupy key positions in the field of Population and Health in Government of various countries, Universities and Research Institutes as well as in reputed National and International organizations.

Facilities
Short Term Training Programmes - The institute has been conducting short-term training programmes for various organizations covering various themes and issues. The training programmes have been sponsored by various organizations like WHO, UNFPA, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Government of India, various state governments, Department of Family Welfare, etc. The University Grants Commission sponsored refresher courses have also been organized at IIPS. Training programmes have also been conducted for senior level official, of the state family welfare departments, for district family welfare officers, officials from different NGOs and international agencies. Personnel from various Asian, African, European countries like Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran, Bhutan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Botswana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, etc. have also received training here. The duration of the courses has also varied, from one weeks to four weeks. IIPS conducts two kinds of training programmes, first one is as per the demand or requirements of the external agencies (donor agencies) and second one is totally designed by IIPS on core areas of population and health.
Hostels – There are separate hostel facilities for men and women. These are equipped with all the basic facilities including wireless internet facilities
Library – The library has a collection of about 82634 Books, 15623 Bound Volumes, 16732 Reprints, 325 Journals, 24800 Indexed Articles, 1700 Seminar Papers and 234 CD-Rom’s. It subscribes to various online databases like Jstor, Scopus, Science Direct, Indiastat, popline, epw and so on. It also facilitates various IT Facilities like networked computers, library catalogues, digitized volumes, electrical and Wifi connections to personal Laptop and so on. The library allows Inter Library Loan within local academic institutions.
Research - Apart from the teaching activities, the Institute also conducts a large number of research projects on various aspects of population. The Institute also undertakes evaluative studies and large-scale surveys. Emphasis is given on studies related to inter-relationship of various social and economic variables of the components of population change such as Fertility, Mortality and Migration. The research projects of the Institute are mostly funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and also by the State Governments, World Bank, United Nations Population Fund, World Health Organization, International Labour Organization and other Government and Non-Government organizations.
ICT Unit - The ICT Unit which was earlier known as the Computer and Data Centre is well equipped with the latest Core i3 and higher generation computers and statistical software required for data analysis. There are a total 260 desktop computers and eight servers in the Institute. The Unit has one main classroom/lab room with 48 computers with three LCD projectors, another small classroom/lab with capacity of 16 computers. Computer classes for MPS, MA/MSc, M. Phil and short term courses are held in these labs.
The ICT Unit has network attached storage (Nasstor) server which stores data. The data set of Census of 1991 and 2001, National Family Health Survey I, II and III, District Level Household Survey I, II and III, Demographic Health Survey (DHS) and National Sample Survey (NSS) data are available to researchers at the Institute. Data sets from GATS, Youth, LASI and SAGE projects are also provided to researchers who request these data sets. ICT unit is maintaining IIPS website.
Consultative Services - The Institute provides consultancy services and undertakes special studies on problems related to population at the request of the Government, the United Nations and other specialized agencies. Given the expertise of the staff in various areas of population, research methodology, etc., an active effort is being made to let the organizations which need short term consultancy services, know about the availability of persons.
