The Padmashree Dr.D.Y.Patil Medical College was established in 1996. It received approval of the medical council of India (MCI), for the award of MBBS degree for its very first batch. The college has been accorded the status of University (under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, vide Notification No. F. 9-39/2001-U.3 dated 11th Jan. 2003 of the Government of India). The college has been accorded the status of Deemed-to-be-University by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India on recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC) within a period of just six and a half years of establishment, perhaps the shortest period of such recognition. This is the first private college in the state of Maharashtra to receive MCI (Medical Council Of India) approval to increase in the intake from 100 to 150 students in 2003, again perhaps within the shortest span of time of seven years. In 2003, the college was permitted to teach post-graduate courses in a couple of subjects. By June 2005, the college was allowed the intake of 81 students in post graduate degree and diploma courses in the following 19 subjects : general surgery, obstetrics & gynaecology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT (oto rhino laryngology), general medicine, paediatrics, anaesthesiology, psychiatry, radio-diagnosis, TB & chest diseases, skin & venereal diseases, pathology, community medicine, pharmacology, microbiology, anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. The college has been recently permitted to conduct super speciality course in Neuro-surgery. These recognitions and expansions granted by the MCI, UGC, MHRD and by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India are the result of visionary guidance and whole hearted support of  the Vice Chancellor, the efforts put in by the faculty and the excellent facilities like spacious building, measuring 4,50,000 sq. ft., large lecture halls, well-equipped laboratories, well-stocked library, a hospital with 900 beds etc. Besides regular lectures and practicals, the college gives importance to research. Several research proposals of post-graduate students and of the faculty members are approved and funded by bodies, such as, Indian Council of Medical Research, the Dr. D.Y. Patil University etc.

Facilities

Hostel - The College has made adequate provision for the Hostel facilities for M.B.B.S, M.D./M.S. students in the hostel building owned by the Pratishthan. The hostel have facilities for reading, room recreational area with T.V. and indoor game facilities.

Library - Aesthetically designed with all ultra modern facilities and measuring an area of 12,300 sq.ft. has been exclusively is provided for the medical college library with objective of providing an academic ambience of excellence. The library with its different components e.g. Periodical Section, Circulation Section, Stack Section, Multimedia, Internet, Reprography Section. Reading Hall for staff, U.G. and P.G. Students caters to the varied user needs. Broadband Section is fully Air conditioned. It has 11621 no. of books, subscription to National Journals = 49,  subscription to international Journals = 71, Current On line subscription to National and International Journals = 647, Total no of Bound Volumes = 718, CD's on Medical Subjects = 295, Dissertation / Thesis = 105, News Papers =13.

Hospital - D.Y. Patil Medical College has a 1020 bedded hospital with all modern amenities and equipment from the learning point of view. It caters to all the specialities and is manned by highly qualified, successful and experienced faculty members. The hospital is well equipped with modern amenities required for treatment including C.T. Scan, Colour Doppler, MRI, Sonography, Endoscopy and Colposcopy. The hospital has excellent backup of the supporting departments and ultra modern laboratories.

Other features of the Hospital:

1.  I.C.U - Intensive Care Unit (I.C.U.) has 10-bed capacity, each for Medicine, Surgery Paediatrics and neonates, under the charge of highly qualified and experienced doctors. Other facilities include Ultramodern Ventilators and Multi Parametric Monitors with Central Monitoring System. The I.C.U. has trained and experienced staff and nurses. Fully equipped Central Laboratory Facilities, which include Arterial Blood Gas Analyser. Stress Test, Pulmonary Functions Tests in the premises of I.C.U. Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

3.  Radio Diagnosis and Imaging - The department of Radio Diagnosis and Imaging is very well equipped and is one of the best centres.

1. The department, incorporating the newer ideas and most up-to-date features, has the state-of-the-art facilities, such as MRI and CT Scanners.
2. An excellent Mammography unit has been recently installed which helps in early diagnosis and management of breast diseases.
3. The department also has high resolution Colour Doppler and Ultrasonography units with all the latest probes.
4. Conventional X-ray units and image intensifier provides the basic radiography set up.

4.  Biochemistry - It is a service Laboratory. Patient service is extended round the clock by the Department through the service laboratory - the Central Clinical Laboratory. Routine investigations as well as special investigations are carried out.

Community Activities - Community extension activities such as processing of samples of health camp patients, school children camps, poster presentation, free diagnostic and treatment camps etc. are held every now and then by various departments of the College.

Career Guidance - The Institute has always stressed upon all round development of a student. During his/her tenure at the College, the student is exposed to different fora for personality development like Art of Living conducted by Shri. Shri. Shri Ravishankarji, Yog Science Camp by Ramdeoji Maharaj and courses conducted by the Brahmakumaris. At the beginning of the Internship Programme, the Institute holds an effective orientation Programme which is conducted by senior faculty members of the College. The students are appraised of various competitive examinations like All India Entrance Examination, USMLE, PLAB, etc. Fellowships, Certificate Courses and other Value Added Courses. The code of Medical Ethics is impressed upon the budding doctors to achieve greater and greater heights.
