The term Dairy denotes - A farm where dairy products are produced, milk production and processing industries and or containing or produced from milk. Thus Dairy is everything concerned with Milk. Dairy courses in India are of relevance to all the areas of dairy farming in India. But mostly when we talk about Dairy, it is referred to Dairy Technology, which is major factor of growth in the dairy industry. Dairy farming is a subcategory of animal husbandry, where female cattle, goats, or other mammals are raised for their milk. The milk may be either processed on-site or transported to a dairy for processing and eventual retail sale. In most countries, a centralized dairy facility processes milk and dairy products such as cream, butter and cheese. It may be run by very large nationwide or trans-national corporations. Dairy breeds are normally not suitable for commercial beef production so the male calves borne by their mothers are sold for veal meat. Some calves are kept for breeding depending on quality of the bull. Many dairy farms also grow their own feed, typically including corn, alfalfa, and hay. This is fed directly to the cows, or stored for feeding during the winter season. People who specialise in Dairying are known as Dairy Scientists or Dairy Technologists. Dairy education in India is of immense importance considering that India is the Largest Producer of Milk as per 2009-10 data which shows that India produced 112.5 Million Tonnes of Milk. A typical dairy technology course includes study of 3 basic areas -  Dairy Engineering which deals with only the technological aspects of the product, Dairy Chemistry which deals with the percentage ratio of milk and cream contained in specific dairy products and Dairy Bacteriology which deals with quality of the milk.

Veterinary Council of India also conducts an ‘All India Common Entrance examination’ (AICEE) for admission to first year Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) & Animal Husbandry (AH) degree course.

    Dairy Job Prospects in India

Dairy jobs in India are available at large scale and just how? Consider this; there are more than 400 dairy plants in the country. These plants are involved in production, procurement, storage, processing and distribution of dairy products. To run all these activities a huge man force is required. As a result both the public and the private sector offer openings for dairy technologists. Dairy products are also exported and this makes the industry a foreign exchange earner. Candidates can find jobs in dairy farms, cooperatives, rural banks, milk product processing and manufacturing industries. Research and development is another growing area, crucial for the dairy industry. Teaching is another convenient employment option. One can also establish his own dairying business. Indian Council for Agricultural Research, National Dairy Development Board, National Dairy Research Institute, Anand Milk Union Ltd, Agriculture Universities are among the major employers in India.
