Diploma in Laryngology and Otology (DLO) is a postgraduate course which is also termed as Post Graduate Diploma in Laryngology and Otology. First, Laryngology is the branch of medicine which deals with disorders, diseases and injuries of the vocal apparatus, especially the larynx. Second, Otology is the branch of biomedicine which studies normal and pathological anatomy and physiology of the ear as well as its diseases, diagnosis and treatment. During the course the practice the main thing is to be taken such as the specialty of Otolaryngology in keeping with the principles of professional ethics, recognize the key importance of deafness control programme in the context of health priority of the country and take detailed history, perform physical and local ENT examination including Indirect Laryngoscopy, Anterior, Posterior rhinoscopy, otoscopy, audiometric assessment and interpretation.
Otorhinolaryngology, Oto-rhino-laryngology, Laryngotorhinology, Laryngology & Otology, Otolaryngology, Otholeringology, Laryngology and Otology, are different names of one and the same field of study. Many institutes prefer to term their diploma course with either one of the aforesaid terminologies. The terminology varies because of the changing times and practices, some terms are considered old, some are considered lengthy while others are convenient. As the practices of using the terminology is not uniform all over India, these might appear to be different courses for many people. However, the abbreviation D.L.O. is largely uniform for Diploma in Laryngotorhinology, Diploma in Laryngology & Otology, Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology, Diploma in Otholeringology and Diploma in Otolaryngology courses.
