About Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University
Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University was initially a campus of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. After the formation of Haryana in 1966, it became an autonomous institution on February 2, 1970 through a Presidential Ordinance, later ratified as Haryana and Punjab Agricultural Universities Act, 1970, passed by the Lok Sabha on March 29, 1970. From 31st October, 1991, it was renamed as Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University. It is popularly known as HAU and is one of Asia's biggest agricultural universities. It is named after India's seventh Prime Minister, Choudhary Charan Singh. It is a leader in agricultural research in India and contributed significantly to Green Revolution and White Revolution in India in the 1960s and 70s. The university has 8645 Acres land (around 7219 Acres. at main campus, 1426 Acres. at outstations). The University has several research centres throughout the state. The university has also provided a number of service centres including campus hospital, community centre, sports complex, guest houses and residences for its staff.

Location - The main campus of the University is situated at Hisar at a distance of 162 KM North-West of Delhi on National Highway No.10 and is 2 ½ KM from the railway station and 3 KM from the Bus Stand. Click here for Google Map Location.
Facilities
Accommodation - The University has well planned systematically laid out Hostel facilities catering to the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Facilities:
- Student Hostels - Accommodation is provided in 14 hostels of the University out of which 12 hostels (8 for Male 3 for Female and 1 for married P.G. students) are situated at Hisar and two hostels, one each for male/female at Kaul campus. There are separate hostels for in service and foreign students. Each Hostel has a separate complex housing catering services and indoor games along with modern recreational and communication facilities like T.V. and Phone. All the modern facilities such as gas connection, furniture, T.V. with cable connection, leading News Papers and Magazine and solar water heating system are provided.
- Faculty House - The University has a well-furnished Faculty House having facilities at par with the modern guest houses serving housing need of the national as well as international scientists visiting CCS HAU, Hisar. The Faculty House of the University can provide accommodation to about 72 persons at a time.
- Farmers' Hostel - There is a Farmers' Hostel just close to the Faculty House with same level of facilities for the farmers visiting the University. Farmers' Hostel can accommodate about 76 persons at its full occupancy.
- Kisan Ashram - In addition to these modern housing accommodations, there is spacious Kisan Ashram catering to the needs of the farmer trainees attending different short-term courses organized by the Directorate of Extension Education from time to time.
Library and Information Services - The Library has about 3.18 lakhs volumes of books and other reading material, and 718 current Indian and foreign journals.
Features:
- The Library opens for 15-16 hours daily throughout the year.
- It has 6 Reading Halls with cosy reading environment where 650 readers can sit and study at a time.
- Bookshop is a service unique to this library as no other library supports this activity. The students and teachers can buy books from the Bookshop at discounts ranging from 10 to 35% against a market discount structure of 10-15%.
- More than 150 CDs of Biological Abstracts, CABI, AGRICOLA, AGRIS, National Sample 7 Survey, Indian Science Abstracts, and Encyclopaedia Britannica form the back bone of CD-ROM database -based information services.
- In addition, there are more than 2300 CDs of books and dissertations.
- Video conferencing facility, Multimedia library, Internet Lab, more than 2387 e-journals are the other feathers in the cap of library services.
- Library also provides full text access of more than 4000 Agricultural Doctoral Dissertations submitted to all SAUs/DAUs during the year 2000-07.
- There is a modern health-friendly canteen in the library premises where the library user can get light refreshing eatables and drinks.
Computer Centre - The Centre is located in the College of Basic Sciences & Humanities building.
Features:
- It has 8 rooms (seminar room, staff room, in-charge's room, software development lab, server and switch room, Network Lab, Teaching lab etc.).
- The Computer Centre has one MICRO32 Unix machine, around 60 P-IV PCs and different kinds of printers for the use of faculty and students as well as for its staff. Two Sun Ultra 450 servers, three X235 IBM servers running Solaris operating system are being used for internet connectivity.
- The Centre also provides computer courses (Comp-501/Stat-509, Comp 502, Comp 503, Comp 504, FN 455, Mgt 507, Comp-101).
- The Centre is the gateway for internet connectivity and runs the web-server for the University.
Medical Services - There is a well-equipped 50 bed Hospital on the main campus at Hisar and 3 Dispensaries at out-station i.e. College of Agriculture, Kaul (Kaithal), Regional Research Stations, Karnal and Bawal. The Hospital at main campus has 5 Doctors and a Dentist. Round the clock medical aid is provided to the students, staff and other trainees.
Laboratories - The University has well equipped laboratories in each area of learning. The University focuses its basic research efforts and therefore, in addition to required laboratory support, facilities of screen house, green house and transgenic green house are also available.

Directorate of Extension Education - It is involved in planning, organizing, conducting and coordinating the extension education activities of the university in the Haryana State.
Activities:
- FAS - Farm Advisory Services is the major wing and field arm of the Directorate of Extension Education covering the entire State through its Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVKs) located in each district of the State. The Scientists working at these KVKs have a direct contact with farmers and render the necessary advice about the crops and livestock production and protection, soil and water management, livestock care and management, child care, family and farm resources managements, etc. at their door steps.
- Farm Training Services - The second major wing of Directorate of Extension Education is Farm Training Service to organize farm training for various categories of clientèle. It is almost practical and effective media to extend knowledge and skill to the beneficiaries.Farmers can contact for training at phone numbers 289491 and 284322.
- ATIC - Agricultural Technology Information Centre provides technologies, informations, services and products to the farmers through single window system.
- Toll Free Helpline Service - The Toll Free Helpline Agricultural Service is provided to the farmers on toll free number 18001803001 on Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 10.00 to 12.00. In addition to this toll free helpline Agricultural Service is rendered from KVK Bawal on phone No. 18001804002 on the above said days and time and from Regional Research Station of CCS HAU, Hisa, Uchani, Toll Free Helpline service is provided on phone No. 18001803111 on Monday and Thursday from 10 to 11 A.M.
- Farm Information and Communication Service - It provides audio-visual and mass media support to the various wings, sections and departments of the University. This Unit also organizes Exhibitions, Kisan Mela , Farm Darshan etc. at State, Zonal and District levels in collaboration with other two wings of the Directorate & other departments/colleges. A Haryana Rural Antique Museum has been established & maintained by this Unit.
- Haryana Kheti - Monthly magazine Haryana Kheti, based on research evidences and experiences of the subject matter experts is published by the Unit. Other publications like Package of Practices Kharif, Rabi and Horticultural & Vegetable crops, Animal Husbandry and Home Science and other extension literature are published to provide need based, problem oriented information to the farming community.
Giri Centre for Sports Activities - The Centre has two indoor badminton courts with a seating capacity for 600 spectators, two indoor squash courts, hobby rooms, two multi-purpose indoor gymnasium with a reasonable seating capacity. A synthetic track of international standard has also been provided in the athletic stadium.
Co-Curricular Activities - The Directorate of Students’ Welfare promotes all co-curricular activities such as Sports, NCC, NSS, Mountaineering, Graphic Arts, Literary, Music, Dance, Drama, NIS, etc. For promotion of these activities, various trainings are arranged from time to time.
Experimental Farms - The University has a well developed experimental Farm of 994 hectares at main campus, Hisar along with ten Experimental Farms, one with each regional research stations covering an area of 568 hectares.
Features:
- The Farm roads are interconnected by sub-roads and provide access to each of the block.
- The irrigation system is well planned on scientific line.
- The Experimental Farms are having advantage of both canal as well as tube well irrigation facilities. The canal and tube well irrigation systems are well integrated in order to improve water quality and to avoid transmission losses thereby increasing water use efficiency.
- Adequate number of farm machinery such as tractors, harrows, seed planters and harvesters are available for timely completion of farm operations.
- The Farms are under direct control of the Director Research who is assisted by farm managers, technical staff and other farm related supporting staff. Keeping pace with the ever-increasing demand for quality seed, recently, the Government of Haryana has provided additional land of 1608 hectares to the University exclusively for seed production.
Counselling & Placement Centre - The University has initiated an ambitious programme to ameliorate the managerial, administrative, communicative, technical and self- employment oriented skills of the students. The Centre is engaged in multi-farious activities to develop their personality and prepare them to face, challenges of future with greater confidence. To achieve this various types of trainings are being organized by this centre.

- The students are being guided and provided relevant information on admissions, fellowships, competitive exams, financial assistance available for higher studies in India and abroad and for opening of their own agribusiness clinic, agri-business centres/units etc.
- The Career Bulletin is also regularly being circulated fortnightly. The Centre invites prestigious Companies/Banks/Agro-based Industries for the Placement of students belonging to different colleges. Campus Interviews are being arranged for this purpose.
- Some of the companies which have employed University graduates are Sygenta India Ltd., Monsanto India Ltd., Bayer Crop Science, Chambal Fertilizers and Chemical Ltd. etc.
University-Industry Linkages - The University maintains a list of perspective employers and further correspondence is made accordingly. This Centre is also organizing lecture by eminent executives from various corporate sector in association with Alumni Association. Placement Officers at college level have been appointed to have better and specialized interaction with the industry people.
RDS Seed Farm - Ramdhan Singh Seed Farm is situated near village Bir Babran (about 18 km away from main campus CCS HAU, Hisar) comprising of an area of 4020 acres. It is involved in Bio-efficacy studies of mycorrhiza based bio-product Endo Roots Soluble as seed treatment in wheat, to develop the Farm as model Seed Farm for production of quality certified seeds of agricultural crops for the farmers of Haryana and adjoining state etc.
Alumni Association - Alumni Association aims at working for all round interaction and we-feeling among the alumni of the university. It provides opportunities for interaction among past and present graduates and faculty. The Alumni of the institution are increasingly finding positions to reckon with at the national and international levels.
Achievements
- It won the Indian Council of Agricultural Research's Award for the Best Institute in 1997.
